Rights, Individualism, Community: Aristotle And The Communitarian-Liberalism Debate, Jeffery Nicholas
Rights, Individualism, Community: Aristotle And The Communitarian-Liberalism Debate, Jeffery Nicholas
Jeffery Nicholas
I argue that Aristotle could not be a fore-runner to liberalism, because his view of humanity is that human beings are constituted by a community and achieve self-fulfillment only as so constituted. Thus, Aristotle endorses a unique position that defends the freedom and self-development of the individual within the parameters of a social order.

Bail Agents And Bounty Hunters: Adversaries Or Allies Of The Justice System?, Brian Johnson, Greg Warchol
Greg Warchol
Bounty hunters are employed by the bail industry to locate and apprehend criminal defendants who “skip” bail and, subsequently, fail to appear for court appointments. While some scholars have examined bounty hunters, this work is concerned primarily with the origins, history, and legal challenges to the industry and its practices. Popular literature on this subject has created the “myth” of the bounty hunter, but it has failed to provide an accurate portrayal of the activities these individuals perform. Through the use of field research methods, this study provides a better understanding of the role that bail agents and bounty hunters …

A New Species Of Neoscelis From Jalisco, Mexico (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Cetoniinae), Alan D. Mudge, Brett C. Ratcliffe, Richard L. Westcott, Felipe A. A. Noguera
University of Nebraska State Museum: Entomology Papers
Neoscelis coracina Mudge et Ratcliffe sp. n., from Jalisco, Mexico, is described and illustrated. Intraspecific variation is discussed, and diagnostic characters separating N. coracina sp. n. from N. dohrni (Westwood, 1855) are given. The key to males of New World Goliathini is revised. Notes on habitat, behavior, and collecting N. coracina sp. n. are included. A new state record is provided for N. dohrni.
Pion-Kaon Correlations In Central Au+Au Collisions At √SNn=130 Gev, Star Collaboration, T.D. Gutierrez
Pion-Kaon Correlations In Central Au+Au Collisions At √SNn=130 Gev, Star Collaboration, T.D. Gutierrez
Physics
Pion-kaon correlation functions are constructed from central Au+Au STAR data taken at √sNN=130 GeV by the STAR detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). The results suggest that pions and kaons are not emitted at the same average space-time point. Space-momentum correlations, i.e., transverse flow, lead to a space-time emission asymmetry of pions and kaons that is consistent with the data. This result provides new independent evidence that the system created at RHIC undergoes a collective transverse expansion.

This article presents a complex analysis of the impact of the technology of continuous casting of steel (CCS) on the rate of the air pollutant emissions from one of the Polish steel and iron plants. The emission sources occurring in the production process have been identified and their rate has been determined. The implementation of CCS has brought about significant changes in the production cycle of the steel plant and it also has caused an increase of the production effectiveness of steel products. The calculated environment effects have shown a considerable emission decrease of all pollutants in the scale of …

Geobacter Sulfurreducens Can Grow With Oxygen As A Terminal Electron Acceptor, W. C. Lin, Maddalena V. Coppi, Derek Lovley
Derek Lovley
Geobacter sulfurreducens, previously classified as a strict anaerobe, tolerated exposure to atmospheric oxygen for at least 24 h and grew with oxygen as the sole electron acceptor at concentrations of 10% or less in the headspace. These results help explain how Geobacter species may survive in oxic subsurface environments, being poised to rapidly take advantage of the development of anoxic conditions.

Mental Health Of Incarcerated Juveniles In Nevada: Final Report, Nevada Institute For Children's Rerearch And Policy, University Of Nevada, Las Vegas, Jennifer Petsonius, Denise Tanata, Michelle Chino Dr
Nevada Institute for Children's Research and Policy Reports
The prevalence of mental health problems in the juvenile offender population is substantially higher than that of the general population (Cocozza & Skowyra, 2000). Studies estimate that one in five juvenile offenders has serious mental health problems, which is nearly twice the rate of occurrence of mental illness in children and adults in the general population (NMHA Fact Sheet #l). However, there have been several methodological problems encountered in previous research. These include the use of inconsistent definitions and measurements of mental illness; the use of biased, nonrandom samples, a reliance on retrospective case report data, and the use of …

Public Interests In Private Property: Conflicts Over Wood Chip Mills In North Carolina, Sarah T. Warren
Public Interests In Private Property: Conflicts Over Wood Chip Mills In North Carolina, Sarah T. Warren
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
The controversy over chip mills in North Carolina is part of a larger public discussion of forest policy throughout the southern Appalachians, Ozarks, and Ouachitas. Chip mills have become a symbol of forest resource exploitation in the southern Appalachians, and many studies and commissions have been established for analysis of the conflict. In this paper I describe the tensions that have arisen between new public views of appropriate property use and more traditional views of natural resource use. Based on the results of a social impact assessment conducted in the summer of 1999 as part of a broader study on …
The Concept Of Social Exclusion And Rural Development Policy, F. Dale Parent, Bonnie L. Lewis
The Concept Of Social Exclusion And Rural Development Policy, F. Dale Parent, Bonnie L. Lewis
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
Since the early 1970s rural research and public education programs have been intensified in efforts to improve living conditions and strengthen community life in rural America (Southern Perspectives 2000). During much of the 1990s, the nation, including the rural South, experienced a growing economy, a booming stock market, and declining unemployment rates (Gibbs 2001). However, many serious social problems traditionally associated with the rural South remain to this day (Gibbs 2001). This paper introduces the concept of social exclusion, used extensively in European countries and now part of the European Union's official lexicon. Social exclusion is defined as the process …
Faith Based Initiatives And Black Churches: Relationships In A Small City, Said Sewell Iii
Faith Based Initiatives And Black Churches: Relationships In A Small City, Said Sewell Iii
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
This exploratory study examined characteristics of black churches in a small southern city that affected the likelihood that such churches would play an active role in faith-based community services. A formal mail survey of church ministers in black Protestant churches in this city was employed. Results were discussed in light of federal policies that promote faith-based initiatives to meet local social service needs. The results indicated that the majority of the black churches in this study were active in addressing local needs through indirect (sermons, lobbying local governments) rather than direct (program development and implementation) means. Among a range of …

Evaluation Of The Flail Space Model Utilizing Event Data Recorder Technology, Douglas John Gabauer
Evaluation Of The Flail Space Model Utilizing Event Data Recorder Technology, Douglas John Gabauer
Theses and Dissertations
Developed in the early 1980's, the flail space model has become the standard method for estimating occupant risk in full-scale crash tests involving roadside safety features. The widespread availability of airbags and increased seat belt usage rates in today's vehicle fleet, however, raise serious questions regarding the validity of the model. Recent implementation of Event Data Recorder (EDR) technology in a number of late model vehicles presents a different perspective on the assessment of the validity of occupant risk based on the flail space model. EDRs are capable of electronically recording data such as vehicle speed, brake status and throttle …
