Tightening of the European Union law in the field of the air emission limit values from waste incineration causes necessity for existing and new incineration plants to conform to the standards. It will often involve modernization of the flue gas cleaning system. Proposed in the paper the methodology of evaluation of the combustion gases composition in point of view cleaning difficulty should be useful to this end. Average toxicity factors for hazardous waste incineration flue gases were defined as well. Among other things they can be used in comparative analysis of the air pollutant concentration in the raw gas (before …

Micrornas: Tiny Regulators With Great Potential, Victor Ambros Dec 2001

Micrornas: Tiny Regulators With Great Potential, Victor Ambros

Victor R. Ambros

Animal genomes contain an abundance of small genes that produce regulatory RNAs of about 22 nucleotides in length. These microRNAs are diverse in sequence and expression patterns, and are evolutionarily widespread, suggesting that they may participate in a wide range of genetic regulatory pathways.

Layer-by-layer electrostatic deposition of polyelectrolytes was used to modify a gold substrate with polydiallyl dimethylammonium chloride and an Ultem-type poly(amic acid) salt. Following deposition, heat treatment converted the poly(amic acid) salt into a polyimide. A decrease in the thin film thickness and a substantial increase in the interfacial contact angle accompanied thermal treatment. Results from cyclic voltammetry measurements also show that the imidized surface had a decreased dielectric constant relative to an unmodified or a poly(amic acid)-modified interface. Each of these results is consistent with formation of the polyimide. Infrared spectra of the thin films formed by the electrostatic deposition …

Accuracy And Limitations Of Localized Green’S Function Methods For Materials Science Applications, Duane D. Johnson, Andrei V. Smirnov Dec 2001

Accuracy And Limitations Of Localized Green’S Function Methods For Materials Science Applications, Duane D. Johnson, Andrei V. Smirnov

Duane D. Johnson

We compare screened real-space and reciprocal-space implementations of Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker electronic-structure method for their applicability to largescale problems requiring various levels of accuracy. We show that real-space calculations in metals can become impractical to describe energies. We suggest a combined r- and k-space scheme as the most efficient and flexible strategy for accurate energy calculations. Our hybrid code is suitable for (parallel) large-scale calculations involving complex, multicomponent systems. We also discuss how details of numerical procedures can affect accuracy of such calculations.

Growth And Metabolism Of Larval Zebrafish: Effects Of Swim Training, Brian P. Bagatto, B. Pelster, W. W. Burggren Dec 2001

Growth And Metabolism Of Larval Zebrafish: Effects Of Swim Training, Brian P. Bagatto, B. Pelster, W. W. Burggren

Brian P. Bagatto

Larval zebrafish (Danio rerio) of three different age classes ('yolk-sac' larvae, 96 h; 'swim-up' larvae, 9 days old; and 'free-swimming' larvae, 21 days old) were trained for 2, 6 and 11 days, respectively, to swim at 0 body lengths per second (BL s(-1)), 2 BL s(-1) and 5 BL s(-1). Survival was significantly diminished in larvae trained at 5 BL s(-1) compared to controls (0 BL s(-1)). Although training produced no significant differences in mass and length, the youngest larvae absorbed their yolk at a faster rate during training. Routine oxygen consumption (M(O2r)) and mass-specific routine oxygen consumption (MO(2r,m)) were …

Economic Inequality And Burden-Sharing In The Provision Of Local Environmental Quality, Juan Camilo Cardenas, John K. Stranlund, Cleve Willis Dec 2001

Economic Inequality And Burden-Sharing In The Provision Of Local Environmental Quality, Juan Camilo Cardenas, John K. Stranlund, Cleve Willis

John K. Stranlund

A large, but inconclusive, literature addresses how economic heterogeneity affects the use of local resources and local environmental quality. One line of thought, which derives from Nash equilibrium provision of public goods, suggests that in contexts in which individual actions degrade local environmental quality, wealthier people in a community will tend to do more to protect environmental quality. In this paper we report on experiments performed in rural Colombia that were designed to explore the role that economic inequality plays in the ‘provision’ of local environmental quality. Subjects were asked to decide how much time to devote to collecting firewood …

Policies For Improving Accessible Web Development Techniques And Management, Michelle Armstrong Dec 2001

Policies For Improving Accessible Web Development Techniques And Management, Michelle Armstrong

Michelle Armstrong

When examining web site accessibility for individuals with disabilities, it is important to address development from the premise that web sites should be aesthetically pleasing and usable – as well as accessible. By applying these criteria, developers are encouraged to work as teams, utilize comprehensive management techniques, and address the need for long-term maintenance. This approach ultimately results in a web development infrastructure that can handle both high demand, as well as change. In the case of the WIND Web Services Team this infrastructure takes the form of a “Development and Guidelines and Recommendations” document, core values conveyed to all …

Active Information Retrieval, Tommi Jaakkola, Hava Siegelmann Dec 2001

Active Information Retrieval, Tommi Jaakkola, Hava Siegelmann

Hava Siegelmann

In classical large information retrieval systems, the system responds to a user initiated query with a list of results ranked by relevance. The users may further refine their query as needed. This process may result in a lengthy correspondence without conclusion. We propose an alternative active learning approach, where the system responds to the initial user’s query by successively probing the user for distinctions at multiple levels of abstraction. The system’s initiated queries are optimized for speedy recovery and the user is permitted to respond with multiple selections or may reject the query. The information is in each case unambiguously …

South Park Campaign Of The Community Coalition For Environmental Justice, Jonathan Betz-Zall Dec 2001

South Park Campaign Of The Community Coalition For Environmental Justice, Jonathan Betz-Zall

Jonathan Betz-Zall

This case study evaluated the effectiveness of the community organizing techniques used by the Community Coalition for Environmental Justice (CCEJ) in promoting the principles of grassroots organizing in its work in the South Park neighborhood of Seattle, Washington. This campaign, part of the SouthSeattleToxics Project, focused attention on the pollution caused by the Long Painting Company's activities. The CCEJ used traditional community organizing techniques to help South Park residents oppose this pollution; the residents formed their own organization to monitor progress even after the offending company has left town. The case study evaluated this work of the CCEJ in terms …

Changing Incidence Of Oral And Maxillofacial Tumours In East Java, Indonesia, 1987-1992. Part 2: Malignant Tumours, T. I. Budhy, S. D. Soenarto, H. B. Yaacob, W.C. Ngeow

Wei Cheong Ngeow

A total of 2193 tumours of the mouth and jaw diagnosed at the Laboratorium Patologi Anatomi Fakultas Kedokteran Universitas Airlangga, Indonesia from 1987 to 1992, inclusive, was studied. Malignant tumours constituted 45.3% of the lesions. Almost 71% of the malignant tumours were squamous cell carcinomas. The remainder were salivary gland tumours (21.5%) and sarcomas (4.5%). The male to female ratio for malignant tumours was 5.1:4.7. The incidence of malignant tumours per 100,000 population over the 6-year study period was 2.64. The yearly incidence seemed to increase except in 1990, when it dropped. The incidence of squamous cell carcinoma over the …

An Investigation Of The Rank Transformation In Multple Regression, Todd C. Headrick, Ourania Rotou Dec 2001

An Investigation Of The Rank Transformation In Multple Regression, Todd C. Headrick, Ourania Rotou

Todd Christopher Headrick

Real world data often fail to meet the underlying assumptions of normal statistical theory. The rank transformation (RT) procedure is recommended and used in the context of multiple regression analysis when the assumption of normality is violated. There is no general supporting theory of the RT. In view of this, the current study examined the Type I error and power properties of the RT in terms of multiple regression. The investigation included both additive and nonadditive models. Results indicated that there were severely inflated Type I error rates associated with the RT procedure under both normal and nonnormal distributions (e.g., …

Conflicts And Common Interests In Committees , Hao Li, Sherwin Rosen, Wing Suen Dec 2001

Conflicts And Common Interests In Committees , Hao Li, Sherwin Rosen, Wing Suen

hao li

Committees improve decisions by pooling independent information of members, but promote manipulation, obfuscation, and exaggeration of private evidence when members have conflicting preferences. We study how self-interest mediates these conflicting forces. When members' preferences differ, no person ever submits a report that allows perfect inference of his private information. Instead, equilibrium strategies are many-to-one mappings that transform continuous data into ordered ranks: voting procedures are the equilibrium methods of achieving a consensus in committees. Voting necessarily coarsens the transmission of information among members, but is necessary to control conflicts of interest. The degree of coarseness of the equilibrium voting procedure …

Antigen Polymorphism In Borrelia Hermsii, A Clonal Pathogenic Bacterium, Stephen M. Rich, Stanley A. Sawyer, Alan G. Barbour Dec 2001

Antigen Polymorphism In Borrelia Hermsii, A Clonal Pathogenic Bacterium, Stephen M. Rich, Stanley A. Sawyer, Alan G. Barbour

Stephen M. Rich

The relapsing fever spirochete, Borrelia hermsii, escapes immune selection by alternating expression of surface lipoprotein alleles. The switch results from a duplicative transposition of one of several surface lipoprotein-encoding nucleotide sequences into the singular expression site. These nucleotide sequences constitute a large gene family whose diversity originated, in some cases, before the major divergences of Borrelia species. We have examined the B. hermsii vsp subfamily of alleles, which are carried on linear plasmids within each cell and maintained in several diverse copies as an antigenic archive. Each encodes a distinct serotype-specific protein. We sequenced more than 90% of the alleles …

Protective Killed Leptospira Borgpetersenii Vaccine Induces Potent Th1 Immunity Comprising Responses By Cd4 And Gammadelta T Lymphocytes, B. M. Naiman, D. Alt, C. A. Bolin, R. Zuerner, Cynthia Baldwin

Cynthia Baldwin

Leptospira borgpetersenii serovar hardjo is the most common cause of bovine leptospirosis and also causes zoonotic infections of humans. A protective killed vaccine against serovar hardjo was shown to induce strong antigen-specific proliferative responses by peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) from vaccinated cattle by 2 months after the first dose of vaccine. This response was absent from nonvaccinated control cattle. The mean response peaked by 2 months after completion of the two-dose vaccination regimen, and substantial proliferation was measured in in vitro cultures throughout the 7 months of the study period. Variations in magnitude of the response occurred among the …

Metaxpath, Curtis Dyreson, Michael H. Böhen, Christian S. Jensen Dec 2001

Metaxpath, Curtis Dyreson, Michael H. Böhen, Christian S. Jensen

Curtis Dyreson

This paper presents the METAXPath data model and query language. METAXPath extends XPath with support for XML metadata. XPath is a specification language for locations in an XML document it serves as the basis for XML query languages like XSLT and the XML Query Algebra.

The METAXPath data model is a nested XPath tree. Each level of metadata induces a new level of nesting. The data model separates metadata and data into different data spaces, supports meta-metadata and enables sharing of metadata common to a group of nodes without duplication. The METAXPath query language has a level shift operator to …

Entropy In Pynchon's "Entropy" And Lefebvre's The Production Of Space, Jason Snart Nov 2001

Entropy In Pynchon's "Entropy" And Lefebvre's The Production Of Space, Jason Snart

Jason A Snart

In his paper, "Entropy in Pynchon's 'Entropy' and Lefebvre's The Production of Space," Jason Snart examines Thomas Pynchon's short story "Entropy" for the ways in which it deals with the kinds of disorder(s) associated with entropy as a thermodynamic and informational concept. Those concepts are installed as a framework within which to consider cultural studies work like Henri Lefebfre's thought in his The Production of Space and Ludwig von Bertalanffy's general systems theory and themodynamics: disorder is rendered not as confusion, but rather as a state of potential energy and productivity and Lefebvre's and Bertalanffy's concepts serve to show how …

Automated, Web-Based, Second-Chance Homework, Randall W. Hall, Leslie G. Butler, Saundra Y. Mcguire, Sean P. Mcglynn, Gary L. Lyon, Ron L. Reese, Patrick A. Limbach

Randall W. Hall

Procedures and programs for Web-based homework administration were developed and tested. The special feature of the protocol is the option of a "second chance". When a student gives a wrong answer in the weekly homework assignment, a second version of the same question is posed to that student within 48 hours. Both the original and the second versions of the homework are Web-based and automatically graded. More than 90% of the students used the second chance at least once during the semester. More than 60% used this feature for every homework assignment. The second-chance option motivates students to study the …
