The method of reading and writing about literature is undergoing a major change. The root of this change rests in the "structural" revolution that swept through the physical and social sciences early in this century. Rather than seeing the physical world as a collection of objects " out there," the structuralists demonstrated that " reality" was partially created by human consciousness. To quote Terence Hawks on the structural revolution, " any observer is bound to create something of what he observes. Accordingly, the relationship between observer and observed achieves a kind of primacy. It becomes the only thing that can …

A Survey Of Small Squares, Maxey Brooke May 975

A Survey Of Small Squares, Maxey Brooke

Word Ways

In a desperate attempt to make ever-larger word squares, logologists have succeeded only in producing monsters such as the ten-by-ten tautonymic word squares featured in the August and November 1973 issues of Word Ways. Is it not time to recall the intrinsic beauty and extreme versatility of smaller word squares -- say, those of size six-by-six or less? This article surveys a wide variety of such squares, taken from past issues of Word Ways, from Dmitri Borgmann's Language on Vacation (Scribner's, 1965), and from Martin Gardner's Mathematical Games column in Scientific American.

Trauma And The Use Of Formal And Informal Resources In The Deaf Population: Perspectives From Mental Health Service Providers, Stephanie W. Cawthon, Bentley W. Fink, Paige Johnson, Sarah Schoffstall, Erica Wendel

JADARA

Using grounded theory analysis, the current study identifies the perspectives of therapists and counselors regarding the nature of informal and formal resources supporting the treatment of deaf individuals with trauma. Nineteen counselors and therapists were interviewed, and accessibility, formal support, informal networks, and gaps in resources were identified as salient themes. Subsequent analysis identified concerns with confidentiality as a strong theme. This study emphasizes the need for counselors and therapists to become mindful of utilizing resources to support the treatment of trauma while being concerned with confidentiality.

Studies in Scottish Literature

Recommends Smith's novel, which rewrites classical myth through the love story of a modern-day lesbian couple, as challenging "conventional notions of identity on multiple levels," pointing to "the transformative potential of queer identity to embrace a clever reconciliation of local community and cosmopolitan mindset," and offering "a reading of Scottish identity that is culturally progressive and politically sound."

The Schemes Of Adventuresses: The Abolition And Revival Of Common-Law Marriage, Charlotte K. Goldberg Feb 207

The Schemes Of Adventuresses: The Abolition And Revival Of Common-Law Marriage, Charlotte K. Goldberg

William & Mary Journal of Race, Gender, and Social Justice

Common-law marriage is about to go the way of the buggy whip. In 2005, Pennsylvania abolished common-law marriage and other state legislatures are considering following Pennsylvania's lead. Even if common-law marriage is abolished in all states, the problem of unmarried cohabitants seeking property rights arising from their relationships will still challenge the courts. In particular, because most claimants are women, the perception of them as either an "adventuress" or a "virtuous wife" will often determine whether they will attain shared property rights.

This article uses the California experience as an illustration of the evolution of the law from the abolition …

Essentially A Mother, Jennifer S. Hendricks Feb 207

Essentially A Mother, Jennifer S. Hendricks

William & Mary Journal of Race, Gender, and Social Justice

This article connects the constitutional jurisprudence of the family to debates over reproductive technology and surrogacy. Despite the outpouring of literature on reproductive technologies, courts and scholars have paid little attention to the constitutional foundation of parental rights. Focusing on the structural/political function of parental rights, this article argues that a gestational mother has a constitutional claim to be recognized as a legal parent.

The article first discusses the "unwed father cases." Despite believing that natural sex differences justified distinctions in parental rights, the Supreme Court crafted a test giving men parental rights if they established relationships with their biological …
