Auditing Litigation And Claims: Conflicts And The Compromise Of Privilege, Harleen Kaur, Sandra Van Der Laan
Australasian Accounting, Business and Finance Journal
Auditing standards require an auditor to make various enquiries about liabilities in general this may entail consideration of potential litigations and claims that the audited entity may be facing. To perform this part of audit, the auditors will generally seek representation letters from lawyers of the company detailing an estimate prepared by management, confirmed by their lawyers through a representation letter, and then sent directly to the auditors.
This paper reviews the implications for the auditing profession of a case that involved auditors seeking such representation letters. The case involves litigation between the Westpac Banking Corporation and 789TEN Pty Ltd …
Public Sector Financial Management Reform: A Case Study Of Local Government Agencies In Indonesia, Monir Mir, Wahyu Sutiyono
Public Sector Financial Management Reform: A Case Study Of Local Government Agencies In Indonesia, Monir Mir, Wahyu Sutiyono
Australasian Accounting, Business and Finance Journal
Indonesia has taken initiatives to reform its public sector financial management. One of the reform agendas was to introduce ‘cash to accrual’ accounting for improved financial reporting. It is expected that improved financial reporting will enhance financial accountabilities of the governmental agencies and will assist both internal and external decision makers whose decisions will be based on the financial reports. However, it has been observed that there is a significant increase in the number of qualified audit reports when these financial reports were audited. This also means that these financial reports are lacking in providing true and fair views on …
In Ambiguous Battle: The Promise (And Pathos) Of Public Domain Day, 2014, Jennifer Jenkins
In Ambiguous Battle: The Promise (And Pathos) Of Public Domain Day, 2014, Jennifer Jenkins
Duke Law & Technology Review
On the first day of each year, Public Domain Day celebrates the moment when copyrights expire, and books, films, songs, and other creative works enter the public domain, where they become, in Justice Brandeis’s words, “free as the air to common use.” Educators, students, artists, and fans can use them with neither permission nor payment. Online archives can digitize and make them fully available without the threat of lawsuits or licensing demands. Sadly, in the United States, as a result of copyright term extensions, not a single published work will enter the public domain in 2014. In fact, almost no …
Deciphering Babel: Dis/Locations Of The Professional Self And The Second Language Curriculum, Sandra R. Barros
Deciphering Babel: Dis/Locations Of The Professional Self And The Second Language Curriculum, Sandra R. Barros
The Qualitative Report
In the following (auto) ethnographic study, I draw from Burdick’s (2012) analogy of qualitative research as “auto - archeology” and from parrhesia (Foucault, 1988) as a rhetorical device of self - definition and preservation to explore the interplay of power and identity within the context of second language education discourses. Specifically, I focus on the ways in which, through the creation of particular performative strategies, two educators working within the context of Liberal Arts institutions negotiate, construct and resist the everyday pressures and implied prejudices often associated with the curriculum and instruction of second languages in the United States. I …

Male Spouses Of Women Physicians: Communication, Compromise, And Carving Out Time, Carol Issac, Kara Petrashek, Megan Steiner, Linda Baier Manwell, Molly Carnes, Angela Byars-Winston
The Qualitative Report
As the numbers of female physicians continue to grow, fewer medical marriages are comprised of the traditional dyad of male physician and stay - at - home wife. The “two - career family” is an increasingly frequent state for both male and female physicians’ families, and dual - doctor marriages are on the rise. This qualitative study explored the contemporary medical marriage from the perspective of male spouses of female physicians. In 2010, we conducted semi - structured, in - depth interviews with nine spouses of internal medicine resident and faculty physicians. Interviewers queried work - home balance, career choices, …

Libya's Implosion And Its Impacts On Children, Lere Amusan
Libya's Implosion And Its Impacts On Children, Lere Amusan
Journal of International Women's Studies
The Arab Spring’s ripple effects on Libya led to the overthrow of Muammar Al-Qaddafi’s government of over four decades. The regime change in Libya was not a smooth adventure. It led to a civil war, which impacted negatively on Libyan children. The seeds of discord that this war sowed in the once considered stable state shall be the focus of this discussion through the employment of descriptive and analytical methods. The contention of this study is that every actor in the civil war disregarded various international treaties that protect children and indigenous peoples during the war. This paper argues that …
Nation, Gender, And Identity: Children In The Syrian Revolution 2011, Manal Al-Natour
Nation, Gender, And Identity: Children In The Syrian Revolution 2011, Manal Al-Natour
Journal of International Women's Studies
This article examines the victimization and role of Syrian children in the Syrian Revolution 2011. I claim that through engaging in a competition to provide a definitive image of the nation, both the regime and the opposition victimize Syrian children. Nevertheless, the art projects undertaken by nonviolence activists have proven to help children heal and to cope with the predicaments brought on them by the crisis. The poetry, paintings, drawings, and songs produced by these children are the best means they have of representing their victimization and their role in the revolution, and communicating their perspectives on the Syrian nation …

How Does My Research Question Come About? The Impact Of Funding Agencies In Formulating Research Questions, Massimiliano Tarrozzi
How Does My Research Question Come About? The Impact Of Funding Agencies In Formulating Research Questions, Massimiliano Tarrozzi
The Qualitative Report
It is a widespread claim that the research question should primarily come from a careful literature analysis (Creswell, 2007). Actually, it is basically a good suggestion, mainly for novices, to avoid the mistake of choosing a research method only for ideological reasons, and far from the phenomenon that one is willing to explore. However, this idea does not take into account other complex phenomena involved in constructing a research question. First of all, the epistemological framework, which is never neutral and performs what I am supposed to investigate; second, the kind of funding agency, which has an indisputable impact not …
Open Source Integrated Library Systems In Public Libraries, Tony Brooke
Open Source Integrated Library Systems In Public Libraries, Tony Brooke
School of Information Student Research Journal
One of the most fundamental decisions a library makes is choosing an integrated library system, or ILS. A public library can remove unwanted outside influence and save money by switching their ILS to free and open source software, or FOSS. This article is an examination of the progress made by FOSS ILSs to become not only contenders against proprietary systems, but also an appropriate choice for financial, functional, and philosophical reasons. Included is a timeline of published evaluations, the milestone of 14% adoption, a summary of the current landscape, and example implementation cases. A functional analysis shows why a public …
