Age And Growth Of The Warsaw Grouper And Black Grouper From The Southeast Region Of The United States, Charles S. Manooch Iii, Diane L. Mason
Gulf of Mexico Science
Opaque rings on sectioned otoliths from warsaw grouper, Epinephelus nigritus (N = 124), and black grouper, Mycteroperca bonaci (N = 172), were used to estimate age and growth. The aging structures from warsaw grouper were obtained by dockside sampling of headboat landings from North Carolina through the Florida Keys. Black grouper were sampled from headboat landings primarily in the Florida Keys. Annulus formation occurred between April and May for warsaw grouper, and from March through May for black grouper. The weight-length relationship for warsaw grouper is W = 2.09 x 10-5L2.9797, and for black grouper is …
Phenology And Floristics Of Seaweeds From The Offshore Waters Of Georgia, Richard B. Searles
Phenology And Floristics Of Seaweeds From The Offshore Waters Of Georgia, Richard B. Searles
Gulf of Mexico Science
Seaweeds were studied from rock outcrops in two areas on the Georgia continental shelf, Gray's Reef National Marine Sanctuary on the inner shelf and an area known as the "Snapper Banks" on the outer shelf. The seaweeds observed are seasonal; only a few plant persist through the winter. In this study a gradual increase in number and size of plants and number of species was observed through June; by July-early August, when all 68 species reported were present, the quantity of plants also appeared maximal. Of the 68 species, 43 are species not previously reported from Georgia; eight additional taxa …

Reactions To "Ag News" Releases: Survey Of Idaho Newspaper Editors And Broadcast News Directors, Marlene Fritz
Journal of Applied Communications
Communications specialists at the University of Idaho College of Agriculture (UI) surveyed the Idaho media in October 1986 to determine evaluations of "Ag News" releases. Of 166 surveys mailed, 104 were returned (63 percent). Results indicated that the UI news releases were well accepted and rated, at least, "very good." A majority of respondents said the releases were "generally understandable to the public," that the maximum length of a story usually reprinted in full was two pages; and that the news releases were preferable to "tip" sheets for all media except television.

"Clearness Of Style, Plainness Of Statement" Experiment Station Bulletins In The Early Years, Lynn B. Padgett
Journal of Applied Communications
Experiment Station bulletins of the late 19th century were written by the scientists themselves in candid, colorful language. The early bulletins from one state (North Carolina) display the personalities of the writers and the excitement and frustration of developing the disciplines of the new agricultural sciences.

Reconsidering Drug Involvement Among Youth And Young Adults: Implications For Targeted Primary Prevention, Mark W. Fraser
Reconsidering Drug Involvement Among Youth And Young Adults: Implications For Targeted Primary Prevention, Mark W. Fraser
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
The purpose of this; paper is to review two dominant social perspectives on the etiology of substance abuse among youths and young adults-the stage and risk factor outlooks-and to discuss them in light of recent demographic and ecological research. The differential demography of drug abuse strongly suggests that the environmental context influences the use and abuse of substances. In an era of great public concern about substance abuse, the use of individually-focused perspectives appears to have resulted in person-centered skills training programs and "say no" media campaigns. Consideration of community-level factors in the etiology of drug abuse permits the identification …

Historical Perspectives On The Care And Treatment Of The Mentally Ill, Albert R. Roberts, Linda Farms Kurtz
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
An examination of the history of mental illness and its treatment over the centuries reveals that the mentally ill have few advocates except each other and that their treatment has consisted of confinement and neglect. Reformers have pioneered for change, experienced brief success, but ultimately conditions for the mentally ill regress. Society continues to abhor mental illness as though its collective consciousness still believes in possession by evil spirits. Discussion of the early history moves from banishment to ships of fools, to European asylums, and to institutions run by the states in America. More recent history focuses on the National …

Reforming The Juvenile Correctional Institution: Efforts Of The U.S. Children's Bureau In The 1930s, Marguerite G. Rosenthal
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
The U.S. Children's Bureau, the federal agency responsible for social policy for children in the early part of this century, delayed studying the problems associated with the institutionalization of juvenile delinquents for nearly twenty-five years. In the 1930's, the Bureau undertook several projects and studies related to training schools for delinquents which were designed to create reform in an area long recognized as harmful to children. This article traces the history of the Bureau's work in the institutional field from 1912-54, analyzes the reasons for the agency's initial reluctance and later activity in this area, discusses the results of these …

The Excitability Of Spinal Motoneurons In Stroke Patients, Hsin-Ying Chen, Chue-Fun Chen, I-Nan Lien
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
Thirty hemiplegics and 15normal persons were enrolled in this study. Measuring the recovery time of H reflex by dual stimulation technique to tibial nerve was performed to evaluate the excitability of spinal motoneurons. It was found that the recovery time of H reflex in normal persons and nonhemiplegic sides of hemiplegics was 57.0±27.3 msec and 57.3±21.4 msec respectively. The recovery time of hemiplegic sides was 37.5±12.8 msec and it was very significantly shorter than the normal ones. The shortening of the recovery time showed good correlation with the neurological recovery as well as the spasticity of the patients. These findings …
