Synchrotron X-Ray Diffraction Analysis Methods For Quantifying Material Strain Response, Ethan Damon Feb 2026

Synchrotron X-Ray Diffraction Analysis Methods For Quantifying Material Strain Response, Ethan Damon

Student Research Symposium (SRS)

A material’s response to specific environmental factors can be measured by quantifying peak shifts in X-ray diffraction (XRD) data. Aluminum oxide (Al2O3 or Alumina) has been extensively characterized via x-ray diffraction, leading to a wealth of existing research and data regarding its properties. Using alumina XRD data from a stressed sample, identifying load-induced peak shifts by comparing to an unstressed sample is an important step towards creating a workflow for strain analysis of arbitrary material. This research used high-energy synchrotron XRD data from Argonne National Laboratory of alumina in both an unstressed and stressed state applied through an external mechanical …

A Proposed Research Into Parameter Variation For Stability, Abigail Butcher, Rogelio Gracia Otalvaro

Student Research Symposium (SRS)

The Oregonator model can be used to analyze nonlinear changes in systems and can predict the stability of the system. It is an autocatalytic reaction model and a Multiple Input Multiple Output case study that provides a reduced mathematical description of the Belousov–Zhabotinsky (BZ) reaction, a non-equilibrium oscillating chemical reaction. It captures the nonlinear chemical oscillations that arise from far-from-equilibrium kinetics. Bifurcation Analysis (BA) offers a mathematical approach to understanding how systems behave under changing conditions by examining nonlinear behaviors and transitional states, known as bifurcations. This poster demonstrates a novel framework that utilizes BA to assess stability, demonstrated through …

Visualizing The Invisible: Simulating Electromagnetic Field In 3d Space With Matlab, Riley Esperanca, Aashman Gupta, Hailey Grabinski, Ameya Sute, Jacob Summerhays, Eliane Dean

Student Research Symposium (SRS)

Electromagnetic field behaviours in free space are defined by Maxwell’s Equations, which couple the temporal and spatial variations of electric and magnetic fields through partial derivatives. These derivatives quantify the rate of change of each field’s vector component with respect to position and time in 3D lattice, forming the basis for numerical field analysis. This research will develop a mathematical and computational framework using multivariable calculus to model, simulate, and visualize electromagnetic wave propagation in free space using MATLAB. Gradient, divergence, and curl operations are implemented to compute local field variations and energy transfer. The resulting data are used to …

Understanding and mitigating the impact threat posed by small bodies in near-Earth and cislunar space is vital for planetary defense, spacecraft safety, and sustainable space operations. This research integrates dynamical evolution modeling, synthetic observations, and reprocessed infrared data to assess the origins and potential hazards of debris from young asteroid families. By modeling the trajectories and orbital evolution of fragments from the Datura, Emilkowalski, 1992 YC2, Lucascavin (Nesvorný & Vokrouhlický, 2006), and Veritas (Nesvorný et al., 2003) families, we constrain how these sources contribute to near-Earth debris populations. Reprocessing Infrared Astronomical Satellite (IRAS) data with Fourier-filtering techniques reveals fine-structure variations …

Microscopy Investigations Assessing The Dispersion Within Particle Composites Manufactured In An Acoustic Levitator, Matthew Smith Feb 2026

Microscopy Investigations Assessing The Dispersion Within Particle Composites Manufactured In An Acoustic Levitator, Matthew Smith

Student Research Symposium (SRS)

Acoustic levitation offers a containerless environment for studying the ultraviolet (UV) curing of particle composites to support goals for in-space manufacturing. In this study, samples composed of a photopolymer resin mixed with alumina or regolith powders were prepared as slurries. Acoustic levitation was used to suspend the droplets during UV exposure, enabling curing without contact with a container or mold. Optical microscopy studies reveal the effect of the contactless manufacturing process on particle dispersion. The study demonstrates that acoustic levitation shows potential as a contactless environment for investigating the manufacturing of particle composites relevant to in-space and microgravity manufacturing environments.

Student Research Symposium (SRS)

Hybrid additive-subtractive manufacturing for aerospace metal components is an emerging approach that integrates the design flexibility of additive processes with the precision of machining. However, the effect of dwell-time modulation and machining control on the geometric performance of Cr₃C₂-NiCr-reinforced stainless steel (SS 316L) parts has not been systematically explored. This study investigates three dwell-time strategies to enhance the dimensional accuracy of laser-based directed energy deposition (L-DED) builds prior to subtractive finishing. Using a Flex Series Hybrid Manufacturing system with interchangeable toolheads, three samples were fabricated under static, exponential, and combined exponential-cubic dwell functions. The static dwell (10 s) caused heat …

How Hidden Companions Skew Stellar Ages: A Binary-Inclusive Analysis Of Ngc 2168, Skylar G. Butler

Student Research Symposium (SRS)

We expand upon our previous analysis of NGC 2168 (M35), which investigated the precision of isochrone-based age determination for individual main-sequence stars using photometric modeling. Building on that earlier framework, we now assess how inferred stellar ages change when each object is modeled under the assumption that it may possess an unresolved binary companion. Using post burn in posterior samples from the same dataset, we computed the mean Stage 3 ages for more than 3,000 cluster members with binaries turned on, allowing a direct comparison to our prior results with binaries turned off. The resulting age distribution peaks near 2.1 …

Periodic Pattern In Leidenfrost Bridges: Experiment And Theoretical Modeling, Diana Slavich, Denise Lesnichiy, Niyati Garg, Ian Holland

Student Research Symposium (SRS)

A system consisting of isolated liquid nitrogen Leidenfrost drops and tori boundaries exhibits bridge formation, displaying self-organized oscillations, traveling waves, and regular patterns associated with thermal energy, continuous evaporation, and vapor flow beneath the liquid bridge. To accomplish the liquid bridge formation, liquid nitrogen drops and a thermally controlled substrate were used within a curved boundary. The formation, dynamics, and stability of liquid bridges can be studied in an isolated environment through the Leidenfrost effect, while mathematical modeling can describe these bridges. Investigations into this system imply the formation of solitons, which are modeled using nonlinear differential geometry. Understanding this …

In the past, NASA has developed various tool restraint systems to prevent equipment loss during extravehicular activities. However, many rely on active locking mechanisms, which can get complex in microgravity. This project details the design, development, and evaluation of a Passive Capture Tool Dock (PCTD) featuring a push-to-lock clip mechanism. This prototype was designed for microgravity environments for NASA’s 2026 Micro-g NExT Challenge 2. The device is designed to passively secure Extra Vehicular Activity (EVA) tools to the astronauts' toolbelt for spacewalk use. To engage, tools are pushed through an elastic U-clip, which locks it in place. To disengage, the …

Modeling The Secondary Catastrophic Disruption Of The Veritas Family, Jarrett Dieterle, Skylar G. Butler, Aiden Kelleher Feb 2026

Modeling The Secondary Catastrophic Disruption Of The Veritas Family, Jarrett Dieterle, Skylar G. Butler, Aiden Kelleher

Student Research Symposium (SRS)

The Veritas asteroid family, located in the outer main belt, is believed to have formed from the catastrophic breakup of a parent body approximately 8.3 million years ago (e.g., Nesvorný et al., 2003). Larger fragments remained in the main belt, while smaller particles evolved inward under radiation forces, forming a toroidal dust structure observable in infrared data as paired bands. Previous studies (e.g., Dermott et al., 2001) have shown that these bands can be linked to their parent families and modeled from their initial disruptions. We propose that the 10° dust bands associated with Veritas may record evidence of a …

Approach stability is a critical factor in ensuring safe flight operations, especially in-flight training environments characterized by varying pilot experience levels. Although flight data recorders (FDRs) offer comprehensive performance data for evaluating approach stability, these devices are typically absent from training aircraft. Consequently, assessments in flight training settings depend predominantly on instructor expertise and subjective evaluation, which restricts the potential for quantitative post-flight analysis. This study investigates the application of open-source Automatic Dependent Surveillance–Broadcast (ADS-B) data to identify and evaluate approach stability within flight training operations. This research develops and tests a metric-based framework for classifying approach stability using publicly …

Comparing Pulsation Timing (O-C) Method And Frequency Modulation (Fm) Method: Resolving Orbital Parameters Of Binary Star Systems, Julia Clark Feb 2026

Comparing Pulsation Timing (O-C) Method And Frequency Modulation (Fm) Method: Resolving Orbital Parameters Of Binary Star Systems, Julia Clark

Student Research Symposium (SRS)

The Frequency Modulation (FM) Method, first proposed by Shibahashi et al. (2012) and expanded upon in 2015, provides a way to detect binary motion in pulsating stars using only photometric data. Orbital motion produces frequency shifts that appear as multiplets in the Fourier transform of the light curve, with spacing equal to the orbital frequency from the central peak. The relative amplitudes and phases of these peaks can be used to derive orbital parameters—offering a purely photometric alternative to spectroscopic radial velocity (RV) measurements. This project applies the FM method to confirm potential subdwarf B (sdB) companions that have been …

The methodology for this paper focuses on research and analysis of publicly available information. Relevant data and perspectives were gathered …

A Low-Complexity Generator Matrix-Influenced Algorithm To Globally Recover Algebraic Codes Over Finite Fields, Oshani Jayawardane Feb 2026

A Low-Complexity Generator Matrix-Influenced Algorithm To Globally Recover Algebraic Codes Over Finite Fields, Oshani Jayawardane

Student Research Symposium (SRS)

Code Recovery using algebraic-geometric approaches becomes computationally expensive with the cardinality of the field and complex code structures. In response, we propose a low-complexity algorithm that utilizes structures in algebraic-geometric codes over finite fields. The low-complexity algorithm to locally recover algebraic codes over finite fields (i.e., 𝑙𝑟𝑐 algorithm) is defined based on a sparse matrix factorization that computes the inverse of an (r+1) x r generator matrix, whose elements are defined by the points on the surface in P³ over the finite field 𝔽q with locality r. We have shown that the (𝑙𝑟𝑐 algorithm) reduces the complexity from O(n³) to …

Microbial Succession And Diversity Shifts In Manure-Amended Lunar Regolith Cultivated With Mizuna Mustard, Nupur Kulkarni, Stefani Capasso Villaneuva

Student Research Symposium (SRS)

Developing microbial communities capable of supporting plants in regolith analogs is essential for in-situ resource utilization and life-support systems. We investigated how Mizuna mustard (Brassica rapa var. japonica) cultivation and manure amendment restructure microbiomes in a lunar regolith simulant (LHS-1). Four treatments: Unplanted manure-amended regolith (LRM), planted manure-amended regolith (LRMP), planted unamended regolith (LRP), and soil controls, were compared using 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing. Alpha diversity increased from unplanted substrates to rhizosphere samples, and beta diversity showed strong compositional separation (PERMANOVA R² = 0.82, p = 0.01). LRMP rhizospheres shifted from Firmicutes dominance toward soil-like communities enriched in Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, …
