A Collaborative Approach To Supporting Nurses' Well-Being Across An Integrated Health And Care System, Grace M. Cook, Joanne P. Bosanquet, Chris Caldwell, Claire J. Shaw

Creating Healthy Work Environments (CHWE)

An Integrated Health and Care System in England with workforce priorities including staff wellbeing and equality, inclusion and diversity, together with the Foundation of Nursing Studies, wanted to develop a programme that supported the psychological wellbeing and development of resilience for nurses across the region.

Resilience-based Clinical Supervision (RBCS) is an evidence-based model of restorative clinical supervision (Stacey et al., 2017; Stacey et al., 2020) that is structured using compassionate mind theory (Gilbert, 2010; Gilbert and Simos, 2022). It is also underpinned by an ecological viewpoint on resilience which considers the roles of communities and systems as a response to …

1990s Alt Music Slang And Socioeconomic Precarity In Despentes’ "Vernon Subutex" Series, Daniel J. Lightfoot

Department of French Studies Graduate Student Association Conference

In a time of widespread cynicism and disillusionment with the political and economic status quo in France, how can literature give a voice to those discontents while inspiring hope? My contribution will explore Virginie Despentes’ use of slang from 1990s French alternative music subcultures in her narrative depictions of contemporary economic precarity and social alienation in the Vernon Subutex series (2015-17). I will discuss how Despentes uses French slang to establish a distance between economically marginalized characters and more affluent Parisians, highlighting how the former draw on vocabulary from Anglophone indie rock and hip-hop subcultures as an expression of a …

Why The Film Was Banned And Its Significance During The Colonial Era And Aftermath, Sawel Awuni

Department of French Studies Graduate Student Association Conference

This paper examines the usefulness of film according to the figure widely known as the father of African cinema, Ousmane Sembène. In 2008, Annett Busch and Max Annas published an edited volume of Sembène’s interviews titled Ousmane Sembène: Interviews, which compiles a wide range of conversations conducted with him during his lifetime. This compilation offers insights into his films and the stories surrounding each production. Drawing on this collection, this presentation aims to highlight the significance of film during the twentieth century, the reasons why certain films were banned, and what Sembène believed should be the purpose of filmmaking.

On Literature And Inclination, Maria Laura Cucciniello Mar 2026

On Literature And Inclination, Maria Laura Cucciniello

Department of French Studies Graduate Student Association Conference

I would like to discuss how literature can serve as an antidote to self-isolation and how it functions as a means to create relationships between humans, thereby providing meaning for life itself. To address this topic, one could recall Judith Butler’s reinterpretation of Adriana Cavarero’s theory of inclination (2021: 46-62). In the philosophical field of ontology, inclination works as an illustration of two different ways of existing: inclined and vertical. Both positionalities correspond to two different ontologies, namely one of caring and one of self-sufficiency. As interesting as the philosophical instances brought by Cavarero and Butler are per se …

“The Written Word, What For? Exploring Genre As Written Memory And Connection Over Time”, Hallie-Blair Quatro Mar 2026

“The Written Word, What For? Exploring Genre As Written Memory And Connection Over Time”, Hallie-Blair Quatro

Department of French Studies Graduate Student Association Conference

Why is it so important to continue reading modern and contemporary French and Francophone literature? And what does this mean for a real relationship between author and reader that can grow and change over time? Through the literary analysis of two contemporary French novels-- Maryse Condé’s Tales from the Heart: True Stories from My Childhood (1999) and Mariama Bâ’s So Long a Letter (1979)—I demonstrate how it is each author’s use of mixed genre that allows for a connection of author to reader, but also reader to self. In each work, this mixed genre can become a generative, reconciliatory space …

Creating Healthy Work Environments (CHWE)

Purposes: Burnout is a challenge to health systems and clinical outcomes (Maslach & Leiter, 2016). Recently, negative impacts on clinical faculty and trainees have also been recognized (Low et al. 2019; Hammoudi, Soltani, Dalli, Alsarraj & Malki, 2023). While the US population increases, higher education struggles to meet a growing need for nurses over the next decade (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2023). Downward trends in nursing program enrollment following the Covid-19 pandemic, insufficient number of faculty, clinical sites, and budget constraints (American Academy of Colleges of Nurses [AACN], 2023) have highlighted a need for explorations on how burnout may structurally …

Shifting The Paradigm Toward Intent To Stay: A Career Crafting® Program To Increase Nurse Engagement, Jaclyn E. Davis

Creating Healthy Work Environments (CHWE)

Nearly 50% of all RNs experience job disengagement, dissatisfaction, and signs of burnout during their career (National Academy of Medicine, 2019). RN burnout is largely associated with two predominant themes: perception of engagement in meaningful and motivating work and perception of personal ability to disconnect and decompress (Press Ganey, 2018). The techniques in this program guide people to experience work as a career and calling and find meaning in their work despite complex or difficult contexts. Through guided reflection on key elements of career success and available, but often unknown or under-utilized organizational resources, nurses learn to align their nursing …

Why We Work: Examining The Relationships Between Nurse Compensation, Burnout, And Intention To Leave Nursing, Jacqueline Christianson, Jill Guttormson, Maharaj Singh, Abir Bekhet, Norah Louise Johnson Mar 2026

Why We Work: Examining The Relationships Between Nurse Compensation, Burnout, And Intention To Leave Nursing, Jacqueline Christianson, Jill Guttormson, Maharaj Singh, Abir Bekhet, Norah Louise Johnson

Creating Healthy Work Environments (CHWE)

Purpose: The ongoing nursing shortage contributes to chronic nurse understaffing, which is associated with care rationing and adverse patient outcomes (Kiekkas et al., 2019 Tubbs-Cooley et al., 2019). Burnout-related attrition from the nursing profession is particularly problematic to the nursing workforce because it is both prevalent and preventable (Shah et al., 2021). Intention to leave the profession prior to anticipated retirement has been associated with burnout, however the nursing shortage has been observed to fluctuate in tandem with the availability of alternative economic opportunities (Benson, 2012). Additionally, many nurses self-report intention to stay in the profession despite burnout for financial …

Yoga For Stress Relief Program For Nursing Faculty And Staff, Julee Briscoe Waldrop Mar 2026

Yoga For Stress Relief Program For Nursing Faculty And Staff, Julee Briscoe Waldrop

Creating Healthy Work Environments (CHWE)

The phenomenon of burn-out in nurses is not new, however, it has been exacerbated and brought to the forefront of our attention since the COVID pandemic. Nursing shortages exacerbate the problem (National Council of State Boards of Nursing, 2023). The increased need for nurses due to many leaving the workforce and the aging of the population has increased enrollment pressure on schools of nursing, and therefore their faculty and staff. Nursing faculty also have stressful roles, that include balancing multiple expectations of teaching, scholarship, research and service. The above pressure as well as an ongoing faculty shortage (also exacerbated by …
