Hardwiring Best Practice: Leveraging Teamwork And Technology For Clinical Transformation, Jenifer Ash, Cheryl Ficara, Anna-Rae Montano, Laura Bailey, Laura Dzurec

Creating Healthy Work Environments (CHWE)

In the absence of appropriate tools, efficient teamwork, and clinician skills, cardiac monitoring has no therapeutic value (New South Wales Agency for Clinical Innovation, 2022). This initially shocking notion speaks to vital aspects of cardiac monitoring—underlying clinical necessity, early recognition and intervention in response to clinical changes, and alarm mitigation to avoid alarm fatigue. As healthcare context and technology become increasingly complex, reliance on the skill of individual clinicians is inadequate and unreliable for maximizing patient safety and well-being and for achieving optimal outcomes (McLaney et al., 2022). This presentation describes how one hospital group leveraged teamwork excellence and cutting-edge …

An Exploration Of Aviation Safety And Security Culture In Nigeria And The United Arab Emirates (Uae), Nicholas Degarmo, Kathrine Lopez, Hana Marz, Cedric Leon, Michael Chrisman Mar 2026

An Exploration Of Aviation Safety And Security Culture In Nigeria And The United Arab Emirates (Uae), Nicholas Degarmo, Kathrine Lopez, Hana Marz, Cedric Leon, Michael Chrisman

Student Research Symposium (SRS)

Aviation safety and security standards are fundamental for enabling the reliability and sustainability of aviation operations. Aviation safety and security are influenced by organizational and institutional standards, as well as the application of human factors principles. This paper aims to explore the regional variances of aviation safety and security culture within Nigeria and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Both regions have taken great steps to align with international aviation standards, offering insight into how different regions shape their regulatory environments, organizational culture, and how cultural factors affect safety and security practices. While Nigeria continues to face challenges such as inconsistent …

Improving Immigrant Families Health: Screening For Adverse Childhood Experiences, Felicia Vanessa Zimmerman Mar 2026

Improving Immigrant Families Health: Screening For Adverse Childhood Experiences, Felicia Vanessa Zimmerman

Creating Healthy Work Environments (CHWE)

Objective: Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are associated with physical and mental health conditions and linked to chronic health conditions among adults who have experienced trauma or toxic stress. ACEs are associated with severe health and social difficulties among children and adults, such as low productivity, mental health, substance abuse, chronic diseases, and short life expectancy. One in four children in the U.S. between the ages of 12 and 17 has at least experienced two or more ACEs. ACEs are more prevalent among underserved and ethnic minority groups. Immigrant children are affected more than non-immigrants; 42% of Hispanic children have higher …

Incivility, The Impact, And The Ability To Overcome, Angela K. Gilbreth Mar 2026

Incivility, The Impact, And The Ability To Overcome, Angela K. Gilbreth

Creating Healthy Work Environments (CHWE)

Incivility is a notorious issue in the nursing profession and has negative consequences for both nurses and patients. Research exists regarding the positive effects of implemented healthy work environment (HWE) initiatives on nurse satisfaction; however, research has not been expanded to evaluate the effect HWE initiatives have on incivility. The purpose of this project is to implement a HWE initiative at a community hospital to mitigate and prevent incivility. The implemented HWE initiative has the potential to positively influence nursing practice and patient outcomes.

Methodology: Selected floors experiencing significant change at a 144-bed community hospital were analyzed to determine the …

The ‘Culture Box’: A Promising Tool For Creating An Inclusive Space In Nursing, Kechi Iheduru-Anderson Mar 2026

The ‘Culture Box’: A Promising Tool For Creating An Inclusive Space In Nursing, Kechi Iheduru-Anderson

Creating Healthy Work Environments (CHWE)

Introduction/Background: The CDC (2021) declared racism a serious threat to the Public's health. The Future of Nursing 2020-2030 called on nurses to strengthen nursing education curricula to prepare nurses to address health equity issues and social determinants of health in meaningful ways (National Academy of Medicine, 2021). To promote health equity and address the social determinants of health, nursing must confront racism and social identity meaningfully. However, many educators are wary of discussing cultural issues; others must learn how to address them or begin the conversation (Iheduru-Anderson & Wahi, 2022). Preparing nurses to address social determinants of health and health …

Predictors Of Prejudice Towards People With Tattoos, Jordan Smith, Helen C. Harton Mar 2026

Predictors Of Prejudice Towards People With Tattoos, Jordan Smith, Helen C. Harton

Research in the Capitol

Thirty-two percent of Americans have at least one tattoo (Schaeffer, K., 2023), up from 16% about twenty years earlier (Harris Poll, 2003). Despite this growing popularity, tattooed individuals are still viewed more negatively than those without tattoos. People with tattoos are perceived as being less inhibited, less competent, having worse character, less sociable, and more sexually promiscuous (Broussard & Harton, 2018). Tattoos are also one of the few physical characteristics that can be legally discriminated against in workplaces. Fewer than 30% of employers in beauty, hospitality, and office sectors are willing to hire someone with a tattoo. (Zestcott et al., …

Effects Of Race And Tattoo Status On Criminality Judgements, Madelyn Wells, Gabriella Haddad, Helen C. Harton Mar 2026

Effects Of Race And Tattoo Status On Criminality Judgements, Madelyn Wells, Gabriella Haddad, Helen C. Harton

Research in the Capitol

310 Prolific participants viewed eight AI-generated images of men who appeared to be Asian, Hispanic, Black, or White who were "suspects in an ongoing investigation." Participants viewed one of the two targets for each ethnic group, one with an arm tattoo and one without. Participants rated each target on characteristics such as intelligence, competency, and trustworthiness, and rated how likely they think it is that the target is the perpetrator. AI men without a tattoo were rated higher on positive characteristics, for all four races. Hispanics were rated the lowest, with or without a tattoo.

The Role Of Parent Involvement In Enhancing Pediatric Speech And Language Therapy, Katie Lynch, Kenneth Bleile Mar 2026

The Role Of Parent Involvement In Enhancing Pediatric Speech And Language Therapy, Katie Lynch, Kenneth Bleile

Research in the Capitol

As speech-language pathologists we provide speech and language therapy for children in a variety of settings. It is crucial to include the client’s family in therapy because family involvement has been shown to promote generalization of skills learned in therapy to a child’s typical environment. Despite this, there are a variety of barriers that exist for families as they try to support their child’s speech and language goals. A literature review will be conducted in an effort to understand how speech-language pathologists can gain an understanding of these barriers and work to understand how vital family involvement is in pediatric …
