Yarkovsky Effect For Particles In Circumlunar Space, Rohith Vinnakota, Le Na Hoang
Yarkovsky Effect For Particles In Circumlunar Space, Rohith Vinnakota, Le Na Hoang
Student Research Symposium (SRS)
The concept of Kessler Syndrome concerns the eventuality that increasing amounts of “space junk” in orbit around Earth will inhibit our ability to safely launch spacecraft from the surface of the planet into orbit and/or deep space. While countermeasures are slowly being taken for Earth, this is still an issue that persists for other celestial bodies. One solution that shows promise for solving this problem is utilization of the Yarkovsky Effect, which theorizes that objects in orbit are perturbated by photons as a result of illumination from sunlight. Our goal in this study is to review the feasibility of applying …
Stability Analysis Of The Essentially Entropic Lattice-Boltzmann Method For High Reynolds Number Turbulent Flows, Michael Derderian
Stability Analysis Of The Essentially Entropic Lattice-Boltzmann Method For High Reynolds Number Turbulent Flows, Michael Derderian
Student Research Symposium (SRS)
The Lattice Boltzmann Method (LBM) is an increasingly popular alternative to the Navier-Stokes equations due to its simplicity, scalability, and ease of parallel computing. However, single-relaxation-time formulation, known as the lattice Bhatnagar–Gross–Krook (LBGK) model, suffers from numerical instability at high Reynolds numbers where nonphysical negative particle distribution functions can arise. To address this limitation, a Lyapunov H-function can be added that mimics the second law of thermodynamics. This work uses the Essentially Entropic Lattice Boltzmann Method (ELBM) in which this H-function is estimated analytically in the collision term. This provides an enhanced numerical stability without significantly increasing computational cost. A …
Designing Experiments To Identify Driver Cognitive States Using Eeg, Michael Culbertson, Poorendra P. Ramlall
Designing Experiments To Identify Driver Cognitive States Using Eeg, Michael Culbertson, Poorendra P. Ramlall
Student Research Symposium (SRS)
Understanding how mental states such as fatigue, workload, and engagement influence driving behavior is key to improving both road safety and the design of intelligent vehicle systems. With recent advances in portable electroencephalography (EEG) technology, it is now possible to study these cognitive states in realistic driving situations rather than only in clinical settings. In this ongoing research, we demonstrate how EEG data collected from human drivers can help identify and differentiate these mental states using data-driven analysis. An important part of this work is the experimental design. We describe how our driving experiments are carefully structured to create conditions …

With the advent of the solar maximum and frequent coronal mass ejections, world governments are in search of mitigation and damage control methods in case of such an event. These methods could protect against communication disruptions, fried satellites, and destroy technology on Earth. Hazardous Materials (hazmat) teams and Emergency Medical Service (EMS) teams need to be protected from the many risks that could arise in the event of a high energy solar flare or coronal mass ejection. Testing different types of materials for the Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) of EMS workers is vitally important, especially with advancement of new materials …
Bio-Integrated Adaptive Seat System For Real-Time Vibration Mitigation In Aviation Utilizing Deep Neural Networks, Tyler Campbell
Bio-Integrated Adaptive Seat System For Real-Time Vibration Mitigation In Aviation Utilizing Deep Neural Networks, Tyler Campbell
Student Research Symposium (SRS)
In the aviation industry, intense and prolonged vibrations during flight, particularly for seated individuals, induce whole-body vibrations. When these vibrations are on the lower spectrum (generally 1-20 Hz), they resonate with the human body’s natural biomechanical frequencies, causing certain parts of the body to undergo amplified stress. After long-term exposure, these amplified stresses can cause chronic health issues including spondylosis, vestibular dysfunction, oscillopsia, and hypertension. Beyond the chronic health implications, these vibrations also contribute to pilot fatigue, degraded visual perception, and can compromise mission effectiveness and flight safety. Current aviation systems utilize both passive (e.g., foams, material layering, etc.) and …
Bio-Integrated Adaptive Seat System For Real-Time Vibration Mitigation In Aviation Utilizing Reinforcement Learning, Westin Volpe
Bio-Integrated Adaptive Seat System For Real-Time Vibration Mitigation In Aviation Utilizing Reinforcement Learning, Westin Volpe
Student Research Symposium (SRS)
In military and commercial aircraft, vibrational frequencies generated by component wear, propeller wake, engine shake, and aircraft turbulence have substantial effects on pilots and crew. Sustained exposure to high and low vibrational frequencies leads to hypertension, vertigo, osteoarthritis, lumbago, and mental fatigue, which become detrimental to operator’s ability to perform effectively. The current solutions rely on two systems, passive energy-absorbing cushions and semi-active force cancellation devices, which are sometimes used concurrently. The passive systems integrate traditional foam with materials that dissipate vibrational frequencies, such as memory foam or gel pads, and generally perform effectively. However, these solutions exhibit reduced performance …

The servicing of spacecraft and other structures in microgravity requires the use of many tools. Current systems require repetitive action to install the tool to the dock, which can be cumbersome and quickly fatigue astronauts. The servicing of spacecraft and other systems in microgravity necessitates a robust device to mount tools to a tool dock. The 2026 NASA Micro-g NExT Challenge calls for a device to fit this need. Our tool mount proposal uses a spring-loaded snap-fit mechanism to securely attach tools to a tool dock. The docking system is made with aluminum 7075-T6 to balance weight, strength, and the …

Student Research Symposium (SRS)
The increased accessibility of 3D printers allowed labs to research novel propulsion methods for Micro Arial Vehicles (MAVs), such as toroidal propellers and electric ducted fans (EDFs), both of which minimize the vortices produced by standard drone blades. Wingtip vortices lead to significant noise pollution, an environmental concern, and cause efficiency loss in propulsion, a problem for hobbyists or research groups. Other factors, such as wake contraction on open rotors, negatively affect the system's efficiency, all of which can be mitigated with EDFs. With the rapid expansion of small and micro-drone use, labs can benefit monetarily from manufacturing drone fans …

Drawing Fair Lines: Open-Source Neighborhood Delineation For The Future Of Valuation, Will Jarvis
GIS/ValuationTechnologies Conference 2026
Neighborhoods remain the foundation of valuation. They shape how markets are modeled, how assessments are defended, and how taxpayers perceive fairness. Yet for most jurisdictions, neighborhood boundaries are still drawn manually, often relying on local knowledge and historical precedent. The result is uneven, subjective, and difficult to explain to the public. New advances in GIS and data science make it possible to do better. With algorithmic community detection methods, assessors can automatically generate neighborhoods that reflect how markets actually behave. Combined with open data sources like OpenStreetMap and free tools such as QGIS and GeoPandas, these techniques allow valuation professionals …
