An Experimental Approach For Determining The Space Radiation Hazard To Manned Space Flight, Dean E. Ewing Mar 1966

An Experimental Approach For Determining The Space Radiation Hazard To Manned Space Flight, Dean E. Ewing

Space Congress® Proceedings

The discovery of the earth's radiation belts and the presence of other space radiations coupled with the advent of manned space flight demanded that the biological hazards thus imposed be carefully and thoroughly studied.

A sound experimental program has been formulated and pursued by the U.S. Air Force Weapons Laboratory, Kirtland Air Force Base, New Mexico. This program uses a multidisciplinary approach to develop a sophisticated technique for the measurement, interpretation and evaluation of the space radiation environment and its potential danger. This many faceted program includes the use of both manned and unmanned earth satellites, particle accelerators, computer analyses, …

A Systematic Approach For The Analytical Analysis And Prediction Of The Yield From Liquid Propellant Explosions, E. A. Farber, J. H. Deese Mar 1966

A Systematic Approach For The Analytical Analysis And Prediction Of The Yield From Liquid Propellant Explosions, E. A. Farber, J. H. Deese

Space Congress® Proceedings

This paper presents a systematic approach by which the expected yield from liquid propellants can be predicted and furthermore gives an insight into the physical phenomena involved.

The yield potential and the mixing function can be determined allowing for the type of propellants, their relative proportions, the reaction rates between the components depending upon mixture composition, the heat transfer rates between the components and the propellants and the surroundings, the mode of failure and the resulting mixing characteristics, and the ignition and reaction delay times.

Combining the above information into seven charts as presented leads to a systematic analytical determination …

A Program Of Astronomy Research On The Moon And Its Logistics Implications, Raoul J. Freeman, Roger C. Moore, Gerhard F. Schilling Mar 1966

A Program Of Astronomy Research On The Moon And Its Logistics Implications, Raoul J. Freeman, Roger C. Moore, Gerhard F. Schilling

Space Congress® Proceedings

This study concerns itself with one aspect of possible post-Apollo space activity -- a program of astronomical research on the moon that culminates in the establishment of a lunar observatory. A mathematical model is utilized to analyze the logistics implications of conducting such an astronomical research program. The nature of the research equipment needed for the accomplishment of the program is outlined. Superposition of this research program upon a basic long-term lunar-base operations plan tentatively indicates that it could be feasible to conduct such a program of research during the 1970's and 1980's well within the constraints imposed by the …

The Ariel Ii (Uk-2) International Satellite Environmental Test Program, D. M. Shipley, R. J. Barra Jr. Mar 1966

The Ariel Ii (Uk-2) International Satellite Environmental Test Program, D. M. Shipley, R. J. Barra Jr.

Space Congress® Proceedings

An important new aspect of the space sciences is the associated field of reliability. The largest part of this effort on a space flight project is environmental testing. This paper presents, as an example, the successful environmental test program of the International Satellite Ariel II. Several specialized tests and unique techniques were employed to assure the quality necessary to accomplish the spacecraft mission. Valuable background information is provided on the mission, technical description, and launch of Ariel II. United Kingdom scientists have received data from more than 5000 orbits on: (a) galactic noise in the 0.75 to 3.0 Me region, …

Microwave Atmospheric Refraction Correction Radiometer, W. M. Layson, C. F. Martin Apr 1965

Microwave Atmospheric Refraction Correction Radiometer, W. M. Layson, C. F. Martin

Space Congress® Proceedings

Range measuring systems are limited in accuracy by uncertainties in the atmospheric refraction correction. The effects of water vapor are difficult to evaluate and are responsible for most of the problem. The application of a microwave radiometer to measure the random noise radiation from water molecules along a transmission path can lead to a precise determination of the water vapor content of the atmosphere. The refraction correction can then be made to an accuracy of less than 1% as compared to present methods which give 3 - 5%.

Planning And Measuring Technical Progress, J. B. Meyer Apr 1965

Planning And Measuring Technical Progress, J. B. Meyer

Space Congress® Proceedings

How is my equipment doing?

Program managers are continually asking, f Where am I (status); how am I doing (measurement against plan); and where am I going (trend and forecasting)? 11 This line of questioning should not imply that they are uninformed, but that large programs are so complex that, as individuals, they cannot personally be aware of progress in all areas. With so many diverse technological developments underway simultaneously, they need systematic, understandable, and believable predigestion of timely information. Many times they wonder if the program is planned thoroughly, or if it is really adequate.

Testing is a major …

Development Of The Titan Stage Iii, James G. Davis Apr 1965

Development Of The Titan Stage Iii, James G. Davis

Space Congress® Proceedings

This paper presents the design and the field test program associated with the development of the propulsion module for the third stage of the Titan III Standard Space Launch Vehicle. The primary objective of this vehicle development is to provide a launch vehicle with the capability of performing a wide variety of space missions. The vehicle configuration(s) evolved to satisfy this objective consists of a modified Titan II equipped with a third stage designated as Configuration "A" or Core, and the addition of two segmented solid propellant rocket motors, one on either side of the Core designated as Configuration "C". …
