Probability Of Tropical Cyclone Induced Winds At Cape Kennedy, John R. Hope, Charles J. Neumann

A statistical technique is developed for estimating the climatological probability that an existing tropical cyclone will produce sustained 35-knot winds at Cape Kennedy. Probabilities are specified for specific times and for various time intervals extending to seven days. The technique is developed initially considering only the storm's location, then expanded to take into account its antecedent path. Two classes of storms are processed separately: (1) Those originating over the Atlantic Ocean or the eastern Caribbean Sea, and (2) those originating over the western Caribbean Sea or the Gulf of Mexico. Kennedy Space Center, Merritt Island, Florida, from where the manned Apollo Space Capsules will be launched. Many new approaches to the launching of space vehicles are incorporated and the extensive use of Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) for the surveillance of pre-launch and launch activities is considered vital in the Apollo/Saturn remotely controlled launch program. For several years the Environmental Science Services Administration Research Laboratories (and its predecessors) has studied a group of auroral zone phenomena at various stations in Canada and the Antarctic. These phenomena (caused by charged particles, electromagnetic waves, and hydromagnetic waves) are often observed simultaneously at both ends (conjugate points) of a magnetic field line. Great Whale River, Canada and Byrd, Antarctica constitute one such pair of conjugate stations. Fortuitously, owing to the inclination of the magnetic field, the field line connecting them crosses the geographic equator at a distance close to the altitude necessary for a synchronous satellite.

Present information on missile range planning indicates that serious UHF telemetry coverage problems are likely to occur during re-entry of ballistic vehicles. Flight test experience at VHF has demonstrated that receiving stations experience difficulty in tracking re-entry vehicles under conditions of rapid changes of signal strength caused by combinations of vehicle motion, vehicle antenna pattern, and plasma attenuation 0 Similar but greater variations at UHF coupled with narrow be am widths and reduced sensitivity of re-entry stations portend greater problems at UHFo Conical scan systems may prove inadequate.

Radioisotope Heaters For The Thermal Control, J. K. Evert

The recent development and fabrication of a series of small radioisotope heaters has opened the door to an entirely new and unique tool for thermal control. The devices are completely passive and generate heat with a reliability of 1. The design, and construction of these heaters is discussed along with qualification tests to which the heaters have been subjected. These tests include crush forces of 20,000 pounds, thermal shock from 1700°F to -320°F, and impact into granite at a velocity of 355 ft/sec. Radiation 'shielding data are presented which will permit preliminary design estimates. General licensing requirements are also included. …
