To Cooperate Or Not To Cooperate, Michael W. Hill Jun 1979

To Cooperate Or Not To Cooperate, Michael W. Hill

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

Cooperation on practical projects, as distinct from that on intellectual ones, poses a number of managerial and administrative problems which are not encountered in in-house projects or work contracted out to agencies. If, therefore, the project is to be successful, it is necessary to identify all these additional factors before starting and to ensure that the requirements of each will be satisfactorily met. The longer the project is likely to last, the more important it is to be sure that it is designed to cope with factors such as defection of one of the partners or the need to adapt …

Teaching Library Co-Operation To Library Students, Ben Rugaas Jun 1979

Teaching Library Co-Operation To Library Students, Ben Rugaas

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

This paper discusses the need for cooperation between libraries, and the forms this may take with examples of both formal and informal cooperation. The author conc1udes that the profession of library and information science is in a state of change and that the library schools must try to train librarians for the future situation. With regard to library cooperation, any library school will have problems in teaching and motivating students for something that does not seem to exist in the real world of libraries. When it comes to promoting library cooperation, through education, there are problems on both the cognitive …

The Swedish Libris System, Lennart Gardvall

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

The ADP-system LIBRIS-II is described with emphasis on its network structure. The connection of 10 libraries within the organization under the National Swedish Board of Universities and Colleges (UHÄ) and four other libraries is outlined. The coverage of acquired literature in the connected llbrarles is discussed, as well as the extension of the coverage which is achieved by a decentralized reporting of accessions in a large number of other Swedish research and special libraries to the Royal Library which submits centralized input to the system. Three possible models are presented how to offer access for searches to LIBRIS outside the …

Cooperation Of Hungarian Technological University Libraries On The Field Of Scientific Information Services And The Special Features Of The Veszprém University Library's Activity, Zoltan Kováts May 1979

Cooperation Of Hungarian Technological University Libraries On The Field Of Scientific Information Services And The Special Features Of The Veszprém University Library's Activity, Zoltan Kováts

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

Cooperation between Hungarian TU libraries has been established long ago. The services rendered, however, do not include all kinds of library activities, nor compensate each other. In order to stabilize long range cooperations, uncompensated services must be paid on a price, which assures not only reimbursement of all direct costs, but allows some premium to the librarians concerned. The Veszprém University Library supplies information services also to an extended group of various users, not only other Hungarian TU libraries. The service oriented organization, which does not include the conventional documentation and publishing activities is a special feature of the Veszprém …

Cooperation Between The Establishments Of Higher Education In Lausanne, T. J. Tanzer May 1979

Cooperation Between The Establishments Of Higher Education In Lausanne, T. J. Tanzer

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

The city of Lausanne houses two Establishments of Higher Education, the University of Lausanne and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology of Lausanne.

While the university has a broader spectrum of subjects taught, certain, notably mathematics and the exact sciences, are taught at both. The boards of governors have mandated a study of the possibility of cooperation by the two libraries. The paper presents the exact situation in Lausanne, the implications for immediate close cooperation under an orthodox system and indicates where closer cooperation could be achieved with an automated system.

The Pica Catalogue System, Look Costers May 1979

The Pica Catalogue System, Look Costers

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

This paper describes the development and operation of the PICA cataloguing system. The objectives for the PICA project are given. The computer system is described together with the present on-line and off-line functions. Future planned functions of the PICA system are outlined: On-line thesaurus facilities, interlibrary lending facilities, statistics, interfacing with local library systems, acquisition administration, extended searching facilities. The suggestion is made that a standard local library system, which can be interfaced with the central PICA catalogue system, will be developed.

Co-Operation In The Provision Of Services To Readers In Conurbations, A. C. Bubb May 1979

Co-Operation In The Provision Of Services To Readers In Conurbations, A. C. Bubb

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

Co-operation should lead to greater reader satisfaction.

Large urban areas may have more than one university and other institutions of higher education, each possessing its own library, along with public and special libraries, all lying within a fairly small geographical area.

To students and research workers ease of access to a variety of libraries in the area seems attractive and the relative usefulness of their services important.

Undergraduates should naturally expect to have most of their needs satisfied in their own institution, but graduate students and staff may often expect to use other libraries in the neighbourhood.

It is the …

Dobis At The Bibliocentre, Doreen E. Carpenter May 1979

Dobis At The Bibliocentre, Doreen E. Carpenter

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

The growth of the bibliocentre is traced from its origin in 1966 through to the selection, installation of the real time on-line DOBIS system, supported by internally designed and written programmes to load an existing database and produce output products. The methodology adopted for converting the database of approximately 400,000 records into a DOBIS format is described.

The role of DOBIS in achieving a high degree of efficiency to the workflow of the bibliocentre is examined in detail. The benefits, both to the network of users and the bibliocentre operation, resulting from DOBIS operating in-house, are highlighted. The versatility of …

Cooperation Amongst The Science Libraries At Oxford University, Dennis Shaw May 1979

Cooperation Amongst The Science Libraries At Oxford University, Dennis Shaw

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

In a historical introduction which traces the development of the Radcliffe Library alongside the Bodleian Library at Oxford it is shown how it took nearly two hundred years to establish a role for the Radcliffe as a science library. During this period, some of the science departments in the University of Oxford set up specialist libraries and from these beginnings has grown a very strong body of science departmental libraries. In spite of the richness and breadth of the literature collection in the University library nearly half of the scientific library resources in the University are devoted to supporting the …

Library Cooperation: Trends, Possibilities And Conditions, James E. Skipper May 1979

Library Cooperation: Trends, Possibilities And Conditions, James E. Skipper

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

Arguments supporting library cooperation are compelling in their logic and economic implications, yet a review of the history of cooperative efforts suggests the existence of strong opposing forces whlch, in many instances, have frustrated planning and implementation.

Successful programmes for the cooperative development of library collections must be related to ancillary efforts to improve access to materials and to afford better bibliographic control.

The Organisation Of Co-Operation, M. R. Van Gils May 1979

The Organisation Of Co-Operation, M. R. Van Gils

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

The paper deals with the following questions:

  1. Why is interorganizational coordination a problem?
  2. What is meant by "interorganizational coordination"? What is its relationship to competition, collusion and coercion?
  3. What are the potential barriers to interorganizational coordination?

To deal with these factors we will have to look first at the basic action orientations of individual organizations like fullfilment of program me requirements, the maintenance of a clear domain of high sodal importance, the maintenance of orderly, reliable patterns of resource flow and the commitment to a technological-ideological paradigm.

Secondly we have to deal with questions of compatibility between organizations. What is …

Contributions To The Theory Of Integration Of Special Libraries, Jozsef Zsidai

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

Since 1971 the Central Library of Technical University for Heavy Industry /Miskolc/ has launched a large scale activity to achieve co-operation and integration on the following fields: the adaptation of the METADEX /USA/ computerized metallurgical information system in Hungary; the acquisition of the special literature in co-operation with the four large chemical works of the region; the establishment of a regional translation office.

The work is very fruitful on all the three mentioned field and our experience that have accumulated in the course of our work are suitable to draw theoretical conclusions that refer to the general rules of co-operation. …

Cooperation In Library And Information Service - The Role Of Intergovernmental Organisations, Elin Tornudd May 1979

Cooperation In Library And Information Service - The Role Of Intergovernmental Organisations, Elin Tornudd

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

Numerous intergovernmental organisations (IGO) sponsor programs in the library and information field. These programs proliferate to the extent that there is a danger of duplication of efforts. Especially in small countries participation has to be limited to programs of highest priority, because a limited number of senior specialists cannot take the responsibility for countless projects.

The IGO programs in library and information service are reviewed briefly with special reference to those of interest to technological university libraries. The following organisations are mentioned:

  • 1. The United Nations Family
    • 1.1 UNESCO, UN Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organisation
    • 1.2 ECE, UN Economic Commission …

Is Cooperation A Good Thing?, Maurice B. Line May 1979

Is Cooperation A Good Thing?, Maurice B. Line

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

Instead of assuming that cooperation is desirabie and then considering how to cooperate, librarians should analyse their aims and functions and consider how cooperative approaches compare for cost-effectiveness with 'going it alone' and dependence on a central service.

The acquisition function of libraries must be largely fulfilled by local provision. This must be supported from other sources, but cooperative acquisition schemes are expensive to administer and less effective than central provision or state-funded concentration of resources on a few libraries.

It has yet to be proved that cataloguing and classification in most libraries need be detailed, or that libraries cannot …
