Conservation-The First Alternate Fuel, Lee R. Scherer, James E. Macdowell

Space Congress® Proceedings

A great amount of attention and funds is being focused on alternate forms of energy. These efforts on a broad front should and must continue, but it is clear that the quickest, cheapest, and most reliable way to make more energy available for our use is through conservation. It can be demonstrated that the potential energy savings are twice the energy we now import from foreign sources.

The Fourth Energy Era, Ralph H. Nansen Apr 1982

The Fourth Energy Era, Ralph H. Nansen

Space Congress® Proceedings

The energy crisis has been with us for nearly ten years. We have grown numb to it while it changed the fundamental patterns of our lives. It no longer means long lines at the gas pumps, in fact, there has even been an oil glut recently. The crisis is not one of energy availability it is one of energy price which has driven the cost of energy to levels much higher than the inflation rates. This in turn has been a major driver of inflation because the cost of energy effects every aspect of our lives. As a result the …

Late Paper: Payload Design Guidelines To Enhance Cargo Mixing On Space Shuttle Flights, John R. Bruce, Roger A. Chamberlain

Space Congress® Proceedings

Payloads on Space Shuttle flights can be designed to enhance their potential to be integrated with other Shuttle payloads. Pertinent design guidelines have been identified in the areas of loads and dynamics, thermal and acoustic considerations, contamination, avionics and electromagnetic compatibility, ground processing and orbital operations. Consideration of these payload design guidelines throughout the design cycle can result in flight hardware with a high mixing potential. The resulting cargo manifesting flexibility provides earlier and more frequent flight opportunities for payloads, reduced costs, minimum post-design cycle modifications to accommodate cargo mixing and, ultimately, optimum utilization of the Space Shuttle.

A Study In Motion Sickness: Saccular Hair Cells In The Adult Bullfrog., Glenn M. Cohen, Millard Reschke, Jerry Homick

Space Congress® Proceedings

We examined the bullfrog's saccule using light and scanning electron microscopy. We found no evidence of a striola. Type A hair cells were not only distributed peripherally, but also throughout the central macula, though far less frequently than the dominant type D. We distinguished two primary hair cell types, which corresponded to the ciliary patterns: type A cilia are associated with short, conical hair cells, and type D cilia are associated with long, cylindrical hair cells. Each displays at least one subtype, which may represent developmental precursors. The otolithic membrane is crisscrossed with tunnels and topped with statoconia.
