Space Station Data Management System Assessment Methodology, William R. Jones, David L. Bahrs

Space Congress® Proceedings

A computer-aided modeling tool and methodology was developed and is currently being used to assess candidate designs for the Space Station Data Management System (DMS). The DMS will be a complex distributed computer system including processors, storage devices, local area networks, and software that will support all processing functions on board the Space Station. The methodology produces assessments of the performance, reliability, cost, and physical attributes of the candidate designs. This paper describes the architecture and design of the modeling tool and presents the modeling methodology.

The Dcaa Access To Records Offensive - Where Will It Lead After Westinghouse?, Rocco J. Maffei

Space Congress® Proceedings

On August ™ 9 T985, the U.S. District Court for the Western H*strict of Pennsylvania in United States v.Westlnghguse Electric Corporation, DCWPA Mo. 11710, held that the Department of Defense Inspector General (DOD IG) could subpoena internal audit reports from Westinghouse Electric Corporation and could authorize the Defense Contract Audit Agency (DCAA) to review those reports as part of the DOD IG's investigation. Although Westinghouse subsequently obtained a stay of the district court order, pending appeal to the Third Circuit Court of Appeals, the case will certainly encourage DCAA to increase its demands for contractors',management data, pursuant to its new …

Astrotech-Streamlining Payload Processing Operations, George D. Baker Apr 1986

Astrotech-Streamlining Payload Processing Operations, George D. Baker

Space Congress® Proceedings

The Astrotech experience offers clear evidence of the ability of the commercial sector and NASA to work together with close and continuing cooperation to the mutual benefit of not only Government and Industry, but also the launch customer and payload manufacturer communities. Astrotech was able to take advantage of twenty-five years of payload processing experience by others to design and build a conterminous, state-of-the-art payload processing facility. While payload processing is only one part of the total launch operation, the availability of adjacent nonhazardous and hazardous facilities and the demonstrated flexibility of a commercial operator to respond to the unique …

Gamma Ray Observatory, On Orbit Servicing, D. A. Molgaard

Space Congress® Proceedings

The feasibility of performing on-orbit servicing of the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) Gamma Ray Observatory (GRO) was initially addressed by TRW during the later portion of the Phase C development contract in 1981/82. The current post CDR GRO design reflects a capability for on-orbit changeout of the two Multimission Modular Spacecraft (MMS) modular power system (MPS) modules and the MMS communications and data handling (CADH) module via EVA. In addition, the design incorporates a capability for on-orbit refueling (OOR). The GRO design also incorporates a capability of EVA override operations for the deployment, restowage, and jettison of the …

Technical Aspects Of The United States Space Station,, Daniel H. Herman, Daniel Briehl Apr 1986

Technical Aspects Of The United States Space Station,, Daniel H. Herman, Daniel Briehl

Space Congress® Proceedings

The United States Space Station, now planned for initial operational capability in 1994, will be a permanent, multi-purpose facility inorbit. It will serve as a space-based laboratory to conduct basic research, an observatory for both Earth and celestial viewing, a depot to repair and service other spacecraft, a plant to manufacture metal alloys, pharmaceuticals or perfect crystals, an assembly plant to build structures too large to fit into the space shuttle cargo bay, as well as a warehouse to store replacement parts, consummables and even entire replacement satellites.

The Space Station concept provides for both manned and unmanned elements. The …

Economy Of Middeck Payloads, E. L. Michel, W. J. Huffstetler Apr 1986

Economy Of Middeck Payloads, E. L. Michel, W. J. Huffstetler

Space Congress® Proceedings

Whether adding microgravity to an experiment as a key ingredient or as an "X" factor, investigators need to minimize cost and risk while assuring adequate control and data.

The crew quarters of the Space Shuttle Orbiter, called the Middeck, offers the optimum environment for this type of activity. The experiment packages can be controlled by the investigator until shortly before launch, and can be retrieved shortly after landing. Utilities are readily available. Human interaction and observation by astronauts and crew members is also possible.

NASA is optimizing this resource with its new Middeck Accommodations Rack (MAR), which displaces the original …

The Use Of Unix In A Real-Time Environment, Robert D. Luken, Peter C. Simons Apr 1986

The Use Of Unix In A Real-Time Environment, Robert D. Luken, Peter C. Simons

Space Congress® Proceedings

This paper describes a project to evaluate the feasibility of using commercial off the shelf hardware and the UNIX (trademark of AT&T Bell Laboratories) operating system, to implement a real time control and monitor system. A functional subset of the Checkout, Control and Monitor System (CCMS) was chosen as the testbed for the project. The project consists of three separate architecture implementations. A local area bus network, a star network, and a central host. The motivation for this project stemmed from the need to find a way to implement real-time systems, without the cost burden of developing and maintaining custom …

Topex/Poseidon Mapping The Ocean Surface, Charles A. Yamarone, She!Don Resell, David L. Farless Apr 1986

Topex/Poseidon Mapping The Ocean Surface, Charles A. Yamarone, She!Don Resell, David L. Farless

Space Congress® Proceedings

Global efforts are under way to model the Earth as a complete planet so that weather patterns may be predicted on time scales of months and years (Reference 1). A major limitation in developing models of global weather is the inability to model the circulation of the oceans including the geostrophic surface currents. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) will soon be initiating a satellite program to correct this deficiency by directly measuring these currents using the science of radar altimetry. Measurement of the ocean topography with broad, frequent coverage of all ocean basins for a long period of …

Expert Systems As Applied To Future Space Transportation Syst, Author Not Available

Space Congress® Proceedings

Future space transportation system programs must utilize cost reduction tools and techniques in order to become viable entities in the prevailing political and economic environments. Expert system and knowledge based technology can provide this opportunity for significant cost savings. Current active programs may achieve some limited cost benefits via piecemeal applications to identifiable worthwhile targets. But, the real value of the technology lies in the inclusion of its principles in the initial requirements definition phase for the target program and application of these principles throughout the program life cycle. Therefore, it is clear that accommodation of this kind of usage …
