Spacecraft Technology Trends In The Amateur Satellite Service, Dick Jansson

Small Satellite Conference

Small communications satellites have been employed by the Amateur Radio community for over twenty five years. These satellites have been used by tens of thousands of radio amateurs for recreation, education and scientific investigation. The Amateur satellite program today is international in scope with nine countries having contributed space flight hardware to the overall effort. A total of 14 satellites have been fabricated in the OSCAR program resulting in 29 spacecraft-years of orbital experience. This paper presents the preliminary findings of a research project conducted by the author in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Ph.D. degree at George Washington University. The objective of th~ research was to determine what factors contribute to decision-making behavior of contract managers in the federal arena. While the overall study employs a regression model to identify the factors that contribute most· to the multiple prediction of decision-making behavior, this paper reports early findings from the initial univariate analysis in the form of a profile of the random sample of respondents surveyed.

This paper presents a status report on the study of a next-generation manned launch system, or Shuttle II, being conducted at the NASA Langley Research Center. Underlying reasons for considering such a system, including the need for low-cost, safe, and reliable manned access to space, are discussed. System and operational characteristics for such a future vehicle are presented. Several rocket vehicle conceptual designs are depicted that satisfy the stated requirements.
