Ground Based Materials Science Experiments At Lewis Research Center, M. B. Meyer, J. C. Johnston, T. K. Glasgow

Space Congress® Proceedings

In order that researchers can take full advantage of the opportunities offered by the space shuttle and space station, NASA has furnished a facility to encourage thorough pre-flight development and post-flight analysis of experiments. The Microgravity Materials Science Laboratory (MMSL) was created to offer immediate and low-cost access to ground-based facilities where industrial, academic, and government researchers can test their ideas. By examining preliminary experiments in the specialized equipment in the MMSL, ideas can be developed and promising concepts can be identified early. Researchers can use the experience gained in the MMSL to select their most promising experiments for more …

Robotic Applications At Kennedy Space Center, Dan Wegerif, Mike Sklar, Ron Despain Apr 1988

Robotic Applications At Kennedy Space Center, Dan Wegerif, Mike Sklar, Ron Despain

Space Congress® Proceedings

McDonnell Douglas recently performed a study, Ref [1], to find effective application of robots and their associated technology at the Kennedy Space Center (KSC). Specifically, this study was directed towards the newly planned Space Station Processing Facility (SSPF). Because the Operations and Checkout (O&C) building has a similar charter to that of the SSPF, the O&C was carefully checked for potential robotic applications. Eleven applications were discovered and a trade study developed to rate these applications. Twenty more applications external to the SSPF were found during additional studies. These robotic tasks fall into three major categories including: teleoperated robots for …

Space Congress® Proceedings

A low cost general purpose mini-satellite bus is being designed to support a wide variety of small scientific and commercial payloads. The design incorporates several innovative concepts intended to reduce construction, launch and operational costs. The design is compatible with the new NASA extended Get-Away-Special (GAS) canister and several small low-cost expendable launch vehicles. The satellite is 19 inches in diameter, 35 inches long and weighs approximately 270 Ibs. The satellite bus provides telemetry, attitude control, orbital boost/station keeping, electrical power, microprocessor and data storage for up to 50 Ibs. of user payload . The hydrazinc propulsion system provides up …

Development Of A Commercial Expendable Launch Vehicle Industry, Barbara A. Stone, John L. Emond Apr 1988

Development Of A Commercial Expendable Launch Vehicle Industry, Barbara A. Stone, John L. Emond

Space Congress® Proceedings

A ground rule in the development of the Shuttle was that expendable launch vehicles (ELV) would be phased out and eventually terminated and that the Shuttle would be the single transportation system for the nation. Subsequently, President Reagan announced a National Space Policy on July 4, 1982, which called for continuation of U.S. ELV activities until the Shuttle was fully operational.

Several private firms expressed interest in providing ELV services on a commercial basis. This interest resulted in the 1983 Commercialization of Expendable Launch Vehicles Policy which laid the foundation for a U.S. commercial ELV industry. This policy declared that …

Sts 30, 34 And 44- A Rebirth Of The Planetary Missions, Ed Bangsund, Robert Knutson Apr 1988

Sts 30, 34 And 44- A Rebirth Of The Planetary Missions, Ed Bangsund, Robert Knutson

Space Congress® Proceedings

No American planetary probe has been launched since the twin Voyager spacecraft in 1979- However, within eighteen months beginning in April 1989, three interplanetary probes will be shot into deep space from Shuttle cargo bays using the Inertial Upper Stage (IUS) as an upper stage booster. In 1986 NASA made the decision to cancel the use of Centaur as an upper stage for the Space Shuttle. This action was one of the results of the tragic Challenger accident in January 1986. With increased safety concerns, it was decided not to risk using cryogenic propellant in the Shuttles payload bay. As …

Multimegawatt Power Sources For Commercial Space Operations, John A. Dearien, John S. Martinell Apr 1988

Multimegawatt Power Sources For Commercial Space Operations, John A. Dearien, John S. Martinell

Space Congress® Proceedings

The commercialization of space will require power for everything from lights to climate control and especially for the industrial processes that are planned to take advantage of the zero-g environment. This power requirement can vary from a few kilowatts to several megewatts, depending on the particular commercial operation. This paper discusses the concepts that are available to supply this power, the different ways the power might be utilized, and some of the problems associated with development and utilization of the power source.

Manned Mars Mission Program Concepts, E. C. Hamilton, P. Johnson, J. Pearson, W. Tucker Apr 1988

Manned Mars Mission Program Concepts, E. C. Hamilton, P. Johnson, J. Pearson, W. Tucker

Space Congress® Proceedings

Of the several new initiatives being contemplated by NASA after the Space Station, a manned expedition to Mars is the most challenging, adventurous, and most rewarding. The Mars initiative envisions much more than just two or three fast trips to the surface of Mars to plant flags and return surface samples. This bold initiative is committed to the human exploration and eventual habitation of Mars, Figure 1. This paper briefly describes the SRS Manned Mars Mission and Program Analysis Study which supports this initiative. The results, to date, indicate the need for a earth-to-orbit transportation system much larger than STS, …

Empirical Results In Automatic Software Documentation/ Explanation And A Plan To Increase Its Tractability, Kent W. Machovec Apr 1988

Empirical Results In Automatic Software Documentation/ Explanation And A Plan To Increase Its Tractability, Kent W. Machovec

Space Congress® Proceedings

Documentation is an important aspect of software, and issues of project personnel turnover, contractual obligations, and so forth all represent significant concerns. Documentation, in essence, provides understanding. We report on the result of an experiment in automatic software documentation/ explanation in which we input a program (written in REFINE™) and output English describing the functionality of the code. Perceptions on the nature of the documentation/explanation task are presented. Significant issues in the design of such systems (e.g., intended audience, source language, abstraction, concept recognition, etc.) are identified. The characterization of this area as "nontriviaT leads to a research plan to …

Software Engineering Development Environment For The Launch Processing System, Marcia W. Burch, Debra K. Moyer Apr 1988

Software Engineering Development Environment For The Launch Processing System, Marcia W. Burch, Debra K. Moyer

Space Congress® Proceedings

Tasked with supporting a progressive Shuttle launch rate, Lockheed Engineering and Software Production set out in 1984 to address the need to increase software productivity. Attention was focused on innovative tools since existing computer development systems were being reallocated for Shuttle operational testing and launch activities. It became apparent that due to the highly integrated nature of software production activities, a solution involving a local area network of engineering workstations was required. After prototyping and proving the design for increasing productivity, Lockheed procured and installed a networked computing system which generated a state-of-the-art environment for software engineering. The introduction of …
