Paper Session I-A - Dod Research And Development, James L. Grogan Iii Apr 1990

Paper Session I-A - Dod Research And Development, James L. Grogan Iii

Space Congress® Proceedings

Current and proposed DoD programs require a broader on-orbit space test support capability and the availability of space based assets to support non-space, ground or sea based RDT&E and OT&E programs. These programs include Strategic Defense Initiative Organization, National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), Army, Navy, and Air Force systems existing, planned, or being developed. The proliferation of these systems brings about new problems and concerns for safety. They increase the number of on-orbit objects and increase the complexity of coordinating and integrating missions with a resulting increase in potential hazards to operational and R&D space systems. Future testing requirements …

Paper Session I-B - Developmental Appearance Of Neuron-Specific Enolase In The Embryonic Chick's Basilar Papilla, John E. Love, Glenn M. Cohen Apr 1990

Paper Session I-B - Developmental Appearance Of Neuron-Specific Enolase In The Embryonic Chick's Basilar Papilla, John E. Love, Glenn M. Cohen

Space Congress® Proceedings

The basilar papilla is the hearing portion of the bird f s inner ear and serves as a model for human inner ear development. We used neuron-specific enolase (NSE) as a marker for the chick T s auditory nerve (statoacoustic ganglion) development. The chick hatches after an incubation period of 3 weeks. At stage 38 (12th embryonic day), the earliest stage examined in the present experiments, we observed faint NSE staining (immunoreactivity) in neurons of the statoacoustic ganglion. By stage 39- «13th embryonic day), stronger NSE immunoreacti vi ty appeared in most neuronal cell bodies (perikarya). By stage 46 (21st …

Science And The Basin Citizen, Peter Nielsen

Clark Fork Symposium Archives

Most people who live, work and play in the Clark Fork River watershed know little or nothing about scientific inquiry on our water quality and aquatic resources. But whether we know it or not, we all benefit from the work of those who strive to improve our understanding of the river and its environs, many of which are detailed in these symposium proceedings.

Hazardous Wastes From Large-Scale Metal Extraction: The Clark Fork Waste Complex, Mt, Johnnie Moore, Samuel Luoma Apr 1990

Hazardous Wastes From Large-Scale Metal Extraction: The Clark Fork Waste Complex, Mt, Johnnie Moore, Samuel Luoma

Clark Fork Symposium Archives

Large-scale metal extraction has generated extensive deposits of hazardous waste worldwide. Mining began more than 125 years ago in the Clark Fork drainage basin, western Montana, and contributed to primary, secondary and tertiary contamination over an area 115 the size of Rhode Island and along hundreds of kilometers of riparian habitat. This complex of waste deposits provides numerous examples of technically difficult problems in geochemistry I hydrology, ecology and epidemiology associated with characterizing, understanding and managing hazardous mine wastes.

Baseline Hydrologic Monitoring For Mining Projects, Douglas C. Parker Apr 1990

Baseline Hydrologic Monitoring For Mining Projects, Douglas C. Parker

Clark Fork Symposium Archives

Objectives of baseline hydrologic monitoring are dependent on and derived from the ultimate use of the data. Baseline hydrological data collection for mining projects typically has several functions including: 1) assembly of adequate information to obtain an understanding of hydrologic and hydrogeologic systems; 2) documentation of baseline conditions for permitting and public disclosure purposes; and 3) documentation of baseline conditions for comparison with future conditions to be measured during mine operation. The scope of such investigations and level of detail required for these different objectives may vary significantly. It is in the interest of mining project proponents, the public and …

Economic Valuation Of Fisheries: Nonmarket Studies In The Clark Fork Basin, John Duffield Apr 1990

Economic Valuation Of Fisheries: Nonmarket Studies In The Clark Fork Basin, John Duffield

Clark Fork Symposium Archives

This paper provides an introduction to methods used by economists a value nonmarket resources. Recent applications to valuing Montana trout stream fisheries, including the major waters in the Clark Fork Basin are described. One finding is that the present recreational value of the Montana stream fisheries is quite large on the order of 3.0 billion dollars. This estimate is conservative since includes nonangling recreational use and potentially significant existence (or intrinsic) values. The valuation across streams varies considerably reflecting differences in both water quality and quantity. The highest value/mile (annual basis) in the state IS on the Madison River at …

Changes In The Benthic Community Of Lake Creek, Mt, Resulting From Mine Tailings Contamination, Barry S. Hansen Apr 1990

Changes In The Benthic Community Of Lake Creek, Mt, Resulting From Mine Tailings Contamination, Barry S. Hansen

Clark Fork Symposium Archives

The benthos of Lake Creek, Lincoln County, Montana were sampled in 1984-85 to determine the effects of a 2.5 years old tailings impoundment located adjacent to the stream. Sampling results were compared spatially in the 1984-85 data set, and temporally with a baseline data set collected three years prior to installation of the impoundment. Lack of replication in the baseline sampling design precluded the use of two-way ANOVA for analysis of temporal changes. Therefore temporal comparisons were made on the basis of changes downstream of the impoundment relative to changes upstream, as measured over time. Spatial comparisons upstream and downstream …

Ambient Toxicity Assessments Of Clark Fork River Water-Toxicity Tests And Metals Residues In Brown Trout Organs, Glenn R. Phillips, Ron Spoon Apr 1990

Ambient Toxicity Assessments Of Clark Fork River Water-Toxicity Tests And Metals Residues In Brown Trout Organs, Glenn R. Phillips, Ron Spoon

Clark Fork Symposium Archives

Trout population densities decline dramatically in the Clark Fork River from nearly 2,000 catchable brown trout per mile just downstream of mine waste settling ponds to 50 trout Instream toxicity tests (1986-89), and analyses of metals in fish organs (1989) were conducted in various river reaches to try to understand how metals influence trout density patterns.

Instream toxicity tests with swim-up stage rainbow trout fry demonstrate that river water induces chronic mortality during spring runoff when metals concentration, particularly copper, exceed chronic criteria for protection of aquatic life. Concentration of copper in livers of adult brown trout (salmo trutta) are …

Ceriodaphnia dubia, a small planktonic daphnid was used to biomonitor point sources of toxicity in wastewater and nonpoint source toxicity in stream samples obtained from the Clark Fork River Basin, MT. Brief descriptions, results and discussions are presented for studies of wastewater from a kraft mill near Frenchtown, MT and potential toxicity of water samples from 19 sites along the Clark Fork River in 1985. In 1987, dilutions of Missoula, MT municipal wastewater fortified with ammonia were tested, as was the wastewater before and after chlorination. Potential toxicity of water samples from eight sites along the upper Clark Fork River …

Aquatic Macroinvertebrate Surveys In The Clark Fork River, 1986 To 1988, Daniel Mcguire Apr 1990

Aquatic Macroinvertebrate Surveys In The Clark Fork River, 1986 To 1988, Daniel Mcguire

Clark Fork Symposium Archives

The Montana DHES conducts aquatic macroinvertebrate surveys as part of its environmental surveillance of the Clark Fork River. Since 1986, annual collections have consisted of four modified Hess samples from each of 25 stations between the headwaters of Silver Bow Creek and Thompson Falls Reservoir. The purpose of these studies are to monitor the integrity of macroinvertebrate assemblages in the river, to detect changes in water quality and to provide information useful for water-quality management decisions.

Macroinvertebrates provided assessments of metals and organic pollution as well as cumulative environmental stress in the Clark Fork drainage. Metals pollution remained the principle …

Control Of Algal Standing Crop By P And N In The Clark Fork River, Vicki J. Watson, Perry Berlind, Loren Bahls Apr 1990

Control Of Algal Standing Crop By P And N In The Clark Fork River, Vicki J. Watson, Perry Berlind, Loren Bahls

Clark Fork Symposium Archives

In the mid and late 1980' s, attached algae levels in the Clark Fork of the Columbia River varied from unnoticeable to extreme nuisance levels. Thi.5 study addressed the question: are P and N levels low enough long enough to limit algal growth and standing crop in this river? If so, river reaches with nuisance levels may improve if nutrient levels are lowered, and high quality reache.5 may worsen if nutrient levels are allowed to increase. Because the Clark Fork often exhibits N and P levels thought to saturate algal growth, there was doubt that nutrient management would affect algal …

Nutrient Sources In The Clark Fork River Basin, Gary Ingman, Mark A. Kerr Apr 1990

Nutrient Sources In The Clark Fork River Basin, Gary Ingman, Mark A. Kerr

Clark Fork Symposium Archives

Under Section 525 of the 1987 amendments to the federal Clean Water Act, Montana initiated an intensive monitoring program to identify and rank the major point and nonpoint sources of nutrients to the Clark Fork River. A 51 station monitoring network was established, including 19 stations on the Clark Fork River, 22 stations on tributary streams, and 10 municipal and industrial wastewater discharges to the river. In the first year of monitoring, samples were collected 15 times and analyzed for total and soluble forms of phosphorus and nitrogen.

Several small tributaries to the upper Clark Fork (Gold, Flint, Lost, Racetrack, …

Distribution Of Trace Metals In Fine-Grained Bed Sediments And Benthic Insects In The Clark Fork River, Montana, Ellen V. Axtmann, Daniel Cain, Samuel Luoma Apr 1990

Distribution Of Trace Metals In Fine-Grained Bed Sediments And Benthic Insects In The Clark Fork River, Montana, Ellen V. Axtmann, Daniel Cain, Samuel Luoma

Clark Fork Symposium Archives

The downstream distribution of Cu, Cd, and Pb in fine-grained sediments and benthic insect larvae of the Clark Fork River, Montana is characterized. This river has been heavily con laminated as a result of past mining and smelling operations near its headwaters. Concentrations of all metals in bed sediments displayed a simple exponential downstream decrease through the upper 181 km of the river. The trend suggested metal contamination originated from source(s) in the headwaters, with physical dilution occurring downstream. Additional data suggested floodplain sediments also were contaminated by the original source(s). Secondary inputs from cutbanks in the floodplains may have …
