Improving Screening For Problem Behaviors Among Homeless Children In Georgia, Marvin So, Luisita G. Agbayani, Mariel K. Gutierrez, Josef T. Griffins

Georgia Association for Positive Behavior Support Conference

Among other challenges, homeless children often struggle with internalizing and externalizing behavior problems that impair functioning and well-being (Bassuk, et al., 1997). Given the instability of service continuity often present in the lives of homeless families and their children, it is strikingly common for child mental and behavioral disorders to be caught at a later developmental stage among this group compared to both housed and other low-income peers (Grant, et al., 2007). Emergency shelters represent an untapped setting in which to deploy universal, evidence-based screeners for problem behaviors among this population. We implemented universal screening interventions across three shelters serving …

The health care literature is rich with Interprofessional Education (IPE) and collaborative learning research based in major universities, but similar evidence is limited at the associate degree level. National data indicate that graduates of associate degree allied health and nursing programs account for 49% of the total healthcare workforce (Brookings Institute, 2014)[1]. To improve education for students in its School of Health Professions, The Community College of Baltimore County (CCBC) embarked on a grant-funded mission to infuse interprofessional collaboration into nursing and allied health programs. Faculty attended immersion training programs to learn, evaluate, and adapt different IPE approaches …

Developing Strategies For Anatomical Characterization Of Locus Coeruleus - Cortical Projections, Kendra Wang, Qiuyu Wu, Alexander A. Chubykin

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

The locus coeruleus (LC) is a small noradrenergic nucleus located in the midbrain that releases the neurotransmitter norepinephrine to diverse brain regions. Through release of norepinephrine, the LC plays a central role in modulating numerous physiological functions including attention, arousal, and mood and behavior. Although the LC projects to many brain region, there is limited information about the organization and the afferent projections to the LC that modulates its activity. The goal of this study was to characterize the anatomical projections between LC and cortical areas using a variety of different experimental techniques, including survival brain surgery, stereotaxic injections of …

Design Fiction: Does The Search For Plausibility Lead To Deception?, Paul Coulton, Joseph Lindley, Haider Ali Akmal

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Since its inception the term ‘design fiction’ has generated considerable interest as a future-focused method of research through design whose aim is to suspend disbelief about change by depicting prototypes inside diegeses, or ‘story worlds’. Plausibility is one of the key qualities often associated with suspension of disbelief, a quality encoded within the artefacts created as design fictions. In this paper we consider whether by crafting this plausibility, works of design fiction are inherently, or can become, deceptive. The notion of deception is potentially problematic for academic researchers who are bound by the research code of ethics at their particular …

Bonding Through Designing; How A Participatory Approach To Videography Can Catalyse An Emotive And Reflective Dialogue With Young People, Marianne Mcara

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Young people at risk of failing through the educational-net post compulsory schooling, or who have done so already, are too often subsumed under negative- based rhetoric such as disengaged, disaffected, and NEET (Not in Education, Employment or Training). This rhetoric suggests that young people are responsible for their, supposedly, demobilised capacity and fails to acknowledge the fundamental adversities highly disadvantaged young people can face, further camouflaging the most vulnerable. In this paper I reflect on my experience of collaborating with a group of young people, identified by their schoolteachers as vulnerable and at risk of nonparticipation. I reflect on my …

Causes And Proposed Solutions For Dental Anxieties And Dental Phobias In Relation To Age And Ethnicity, Michelle Cavalaris

Undergraduate Research at FIU (URFIU) Conference

There are millions of Americans who suffer from dental phobias and about thirtyfive million Americans who suffer from dental anxieties. These statistics reprent the magnitude of dental related fears among individuals. Persons who suffer from these dental related fears are unable to keep an appointment with a dentist. Therefore, the patient’s oral health suffers; which may lead to other health issues. This experiment was created to determine the basis of dental fear, by concentrating on three categories: age, origin, and dental environment. The first objective of this experiment is to first determine if there is a significant difference between a …

My Path From Farquhar Collefe Of Arts And Science To The Field Of Medicine, Crystal Romero Feb 2016

My Path From Farquhar Collefe Of Arts And Science To The Field Of Medicine, Crystal Romero

Pre-Health Day

As an undergraduate student in the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences I was confident that I wanted to be a physician; however, I was also intrigued by the field of Public Health. Consequently, I pursued a Master’s degree concentrating in Epidemiology and Biostatistics. Personally, I saw the attainment of this degree as a means of developing a skill set for future practice as a physician. Public health concentrates on community health needs, while medicine focuses more on the needs of an individual patient. During this time I worked on a project at the Broward County Health Department that allowed …
