The Human Spirit In Space, B J. Bluth
The Human Spirit In Space, B J. Bluth
Space Congress® Proceedings
The space ships which have come from the human imagination have been extraordinarily successful. Does mankind have the spirit to reside in those ships/ and newly planned space stations for long periods of time?
Evidence about the performance of people in isolated and confined environments for long periods of time raises issues that need examination. The Soviet experience in the Salyut 6 shows signs of interpersonal and individual strain. Studies of the Arctic/ Antarctic/ submarines/ oceanographic research vessels/ simulations/ and many other cases indicate similar episodes that effect human performance/ and consequently impinge on mission safety and success.
Assessment Of The Impact Of Increased Solar-Ultraviolet Radiation Of Seagress, Robert P. Trocine, Gary N. Wells
Assessment Of The Impact Of Increased Solar-Ultraviolet Radiation Of Seagress, Robert P. Trocine, Gary N. Wells
Space Congress® Proceedings
An early concern in the planning of the Space Shuttle Program was the loss of atmospheric ozone due to repeated Shuttle flights and a resultant increase in penetrant ultraviolet radiation.
Our research group has examined the effects of an increase in this radiation (UV-B, 290- 315 nm) on three marine angiosperms (Halophila engelmannii Aschers, Halodule wrightii Aschers, and Syringodium filiforme Kutz) important to shallow marine and estuarine ecosystems. The photosynthetic tolerance of each seagrass to UV-B and mechanisms which might prevent or reverse damage were investigated.
The data show little effect by current environmental levels of UV-B and suggest the …
A Study In Motion Sickness: Saccular Hair Cells In The Adult Bullfrog., Glenn M. Cohen, Millard Reschke, Jerry Homick
A Study In Motion Sickness: Saccular Hair Cells In The Adult Bullfrog., Glenn M. Cohen, Millard Reschke, Jerry Homick
Space Congress® Proceedings
We examined the bullfrog's saccule using light and scanning electron microscopy. We found no evidence of a striola. Type A hair cells were not only distributed peripherally, but also throughout the central macula, though far less frequently than the dominant type D. We distinguished two primary hair cell types, which corresponded to the ciliary patterns: type A cilia are associated with short, conical hair cells, and type D cilia are associated with long, cylindrical hair cells. Each displays at least one subtype, which may represent developmental precursors. The otolithic membrane is crisscrossed with tunnels and topped with statoconia.
Largest Mesh Deployable Antenna Technology, B. C. Tankersley, B. E. Mcintosh
Largest Mesh Deployable Antenna Technology, B. C. Tankersley, B. E. Mcintosh
Space Congress® Proceedings
Preliminary assessments by both government and industry indicate that applications exist in the areas of communications, radio astronomy, and Earth observations requiring large, space based antennas. The mesh deployable antenna, based on its demonstrated success in the smaller aperture range, provides a promising near term capability for satisfying a significant number of these space-based applications. In this article the technology status of mesh deployable antennas is reviewed and design concepts applicable to very large mesh deployable reflectors are discussed. The present state-of-the-art performance is presented along with projections of potential performance improvement. These are compared with identified focus missions from …
U.S. Department Of Energy Synfuels Program Overview, Edward J. Lievens
U.S. Department Of Energy Synfuels Program Overview, Edward J. Lievens
Space Congress® Proceedings
The Administration has proposed shifting the focus of the Government's synfuels program to the Synthetic Fuels Corporation (SFC) and would assign to the SRC and responsibility to assist major synfuel plant construction projects. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), currently involved in the management and would discontinue its activities in this area.
Space Platform, Larry P. Morata, Marshall W. Novick
Space Platform, Larry P. Morata, Marshall W. Novick
Space Congress® Proceedings
The Space Platform (SP) will provide a cost effective long-term host vehicle for scientific and applications payloads beginning in the late 1980's. SP will take advantage of STS capabilities for delivery to orbit, assembly, check-out, maintenance and servicing. Services provided to multiple payloads include electrical power, heat rejection, attitude control and high-rate data handling communications. The system includes self-contained altitude maintenance and is designed for indefinite orbital operation.
MDAC and TRW are currently studying Space Platform for NASA/MSFC to develop optimum configurations for the eventual development-phase competition. Included in the study is development of plans for evolution into an eventual …
The Fourth Energy Era, Ralph H. Nansen
The Fourth Energy Era, Ralph H. Nansen
Space Congress® Proceedings
The energy crisis has been with us for nearly ten years. We have grown numb to it while it changed the fundamental patterns of our lives. It no longer means long lines at the gas pumps, in fact, there has even been an oil glut recently. The crisis is not one of energy availability it is one of energy price which has driven the cost of energy to levels much higher than the inflation rates. This in turn has been a major driver of inflation because the cost of energy effects every aspect of our lives. As a result the …
Life Support System Considerations For Space Station, Merlin A. Shuey, Hamilton Standard
Life Support System Considerations For Space Station, Merlin A. Shuey, Hamilton Standard
Space Congress® Proceedings
With the growing desire to initiate a Space Station program, the interest in advanced, regenerative life support systems is also increasing. This paper briefly reviews this future spacecraft and concentrates on the advanced technology in some of the key functions of life support for this application. This paper reviews the basics of life support and its importance within a space station program. It concentrates«on the impact of major requirements and discusses some of the key influences that impact the design of the system. It also projects some of the key functional areas of the life support system which are most …
