State of Nonprofits and Philanthropy in San Diego

The 2025 State of Nonprofits and Philanthropy in San Diego examines how federal policy changes, funding volatility, and rising community needs are reshaping the region’s nonprofit sector. Drawing on survey data from nonprofit leaders and employees, public opinion polling, and financial and employment analysis, the report provides an early assessment of the sector’s financial health, workforce capacity, and its role as a primary access point for services such as housing, food, education, healthcare, and the arts. It highlights mounting pressures on nonprofit infrastructure alongside the sector’s enduring strengths in public trust, collaboration, advocacy, and shared investment strategies that will shape …

In Memory Of Mr. Ed Kelly, Office Of The President, East Tennessee State University

ETSU Obituaries

Dear ETSU Community,

With great appreciation for a life of service, I share the sad news of the passing of Ed Kelly, a longtime colleague and friend to many on our campus.

A native of Western New York, Ed called East Tennessee home, as he served for 22 years as the General Counsel at ETSU. From 1997 to 2019, Ed handled some of the most difficult and sensitive issues on our campus in his role as University Counsel. He mediated and resolved disputes involving employment matters, negotiated leases and contracts, and, drawing on his own background in law enforcement, worked …

Background

  • Resident well-being remains a critical concern in GME, with increasing rates of burnout, mental health challenges, and persistent barriers to accessing care.2,4
  • Burnout among residents is linked to higher rates of medical errors and lower patient satisfaction.4,5
  • ACGME emphasizes the importance of fostering a culture of wellness including the opportunity for residents to attend healthcare appointments during working hours; however, programs often struggle to translate these goals into sustainable, practical interventions.1
  • Opt-out programs have been used to target residents and medical students to increase help-seeking and provide access to mental health care with limited barriers.
  • Stigma, …

Resident Mental Health: Creating An Innovative, Sustainable, And Scalable Counseling Program, Emily Lisco, Md, Alexandra Hughes, Lcsw, Shawn Blue, Psyd Thomas Jefferson University, Meghan O’Meara, Phd, Lpc

Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior Posters

Background

  • The ACGME Common Program Requirements emphasize resident well-being and expect GME programs to support resident mental health.1
  • There are limited specific guidelines on how mental health support should be delivered, resulting in wide variability.1,3
  • Research on resident-specific mental health services is limited, making best practices difficult to define.
  • Medical students typically receive care through student counseling centers; but this support ends after graduation.3
  • Residents occupy a dual role as both hospital employees and learners, creating gaps in existing support models, as employee assistance programs are often underutilized by residents.
  • Residents experience higher rates of burnout than …

Linking Illinois High School To College Data And Beyond, Benjamin Boer Feb 2026

Linking Illinois High School To College Data And Beyond, Benjamin Boer

Reports, Analyses, and other Publications

This brief examines the challenges and opportunities in linking high school, postsecondary, and workforce data in Illinois. Despite significant investments in education pathways, career programs, and dual credit initiatives, there is no central source of data showing whether Illinois high school graduates are enrolling in college, persisting through their programs, and securing quality employment. The brief explores why data linking is technically and structurally challenging, reviews existing efforts at state and national levels, and provides specific recommendations for improving data infrastructure. Using the STAMP (Scaling Transformative Advanced Manufacturing Pathways) program as a case study, the authors demonstrate how linked data …

Pawter In The Water: Rhyming Stories About Water Safety, Angie Baker, Calli Brennan, Joe Baker

Fiction and Poetry

Pawter in the Water is a powerful water safety movement created to help protect children around water.  Drowning is preventable, yet it remains the leading cause of death for children ages 1-4 and the second cause of accidental death for children ages 5-14. Decision-Based Artificial Intelligence And The Strategic Reordering Of Military Power, Elise Annett Feb 2026

Decision-Based Artificial Intelligence And The Strategic Reordering Of Military Power, Elise Annett

Strategic Insights

This commentary examines how decision-based artificial intelligence (AI) is reshaping the structure and exercise of military power. As AI systems increasingly filter information, evaluate options, and accelerate operational decision cycles, military advantage is shifting toward control of the “decision space” itself. AI-enabled decision support allows actors to shape operational environments, constrain adversary choices, and compress the time available for political or military response. These developments are transforming command structures, cross-domain operations, and the role of human authority within military decision processes. Recognizing decision-space as a contested domain, this commentary calls for doctrinal adaptation, revised command architectures, and clear frameworks for …
