Genomic medicine is playing an increasingly important role in pediatric care, but it can feel complex for general pediatricians. In this episode of Pediatrics in Practice, Scott Younger, PhD, discusses how genomics is already influencing pediatric diagnosis and care today, common scenarios where genetic insights may be helpful, and why genomic testing can be valuable even when it doesn’t lead to a targeted therapy. Alaska is an aviation-dependent state with about 23% of the population living off the road system. For so many, aviation infrastructure performance is critical to maintain flows of food, medicine, air ambulance services, patient travel, and basic transportation between communities. One key set of assets from this suite of infrastructure are Automated Weather Observation Stations (AWOS) or Automated Surface Observation Stations (ASOS) that generate real-time aviation weather data that is crucial for operational decision making and the certified weather reports that are functionally essential for landing under instrument flight rules. Biodeterrence In An Era Of Convergent Threats, James Giordano
Strategic Insights
This commentary examines the growing need for a comprehensive biodeterrence strategy in response to the convergence of biotechnology, artificial intelligence, and cross-domain warfare capabilities. Dr. Giordano argues that advances in life sciences, combined with the activities of peer competitors, are transforming the biological domain into a contested strategic space where biological effects intersect with other forms of warfare. Traditional biodefense approaches are no longer sufficient. Instead, this piece calls for an integrated biodeterrence framework that combines biosurveillance, intelligence, public health, and operational planning. Recommendations include developing a Department of War–wide biodeterrence strategy, expanding detection and attribution capabilities, strengthening biotechnology intelligence, …
