“The St. Louis Flat:” A Typological Study Of The Characteristics And Distribution Of Four-Family Flats In Greater St. Louis, Camden Maggard

The four-family flat is a multi-family housing type that consists of four residential units in a double-stacked arrangement. These buildings are one of the most common multi-family housing types in the United States. While the four-family building type is present in multiple cities, these buildings are uniquely characteristic of the St. Louis region. The Kroc Border Fellows Program brings together change agents from academia, civil society, the public sector, and the private sector to build a more inclusive and peaceful Mexico-U.S. border region through action-oriented research and meaningful community partnerships.

The non-residential fellowship spans 10 months and provides financial and technical support for Fellow-designed and -implemented projects. This model reflects a core belief that those closest to border communities' challenges are best positioned to develop effective solutions — and that lasting change must be built on existing community assets and strengths.

Background: Maine has a rising incidence of melanoma with 746 cases reported in 2013, 984 cases in 2018, and 1130 cases in 2022. At the same time, Maine faces a shortage of dermatology providers, limiting access to timely care. Early detection and prompt treatment are critical, as they are strongly associated with improved melanoma survival rates. Partnerships between dermatology and primary care are important to bridging this gap.

Background Oral care is often not a standardized practice in the NICU. Oral/lip care is documented at each care time, even if it is sometimes not performed in the same way. There is confusion about what oral/lip care entails. The focus of this project is to clarify oral care and hygiene procedures and make them a standard inclusion in care times, especially for neonates on respiratory support who can't PO feed.
