The NMOER Course Assessment Process is a standardized data collection system used to document and assess courses that utilize Open Educational Resources (OER). Institutions are asked to report all courses currently using OER, including newly adopted OER courses as well as courses that have continued using OER from previous years.

June 8, 9, & 10, 2026

In this 2026 Summer Institute, K-16th educators representing diverse contexts will use the power of storytelling to investigate borderlands. By interweaving multimodalities-visual, sound, and movement and by reading children’s literature deeply, participants will create complex narrative tapestries of experience and empathy on the borderlands that they will, in turn, use to support student conversations and conceptions.

This institute is open to all primary and secondary educators working in: Prek-16th grade school settings visual arts, theater, and music educators, museums, libraries, and community organizations.

Rosa Elia Garza (née Peña) was born on August 19, 1947, in Arcabuz, Tamaulipas, Mexico, and immigrated to the United States at four months of age with her parents, Porfirio Peña and Elodia González Peña. The youngest of eight sisters in a family with no sons, she grew up in Monte Alto, Texas, where her family built a life centered on hard work, family unity, and the pursuit of a better future after selling their property in Mexico. Drawing on works encountered during a Medical Humanities study abroad program in Spain, the documentary examines compassion as a skill that can be cultivated through self-reflection, recognition of shared vulnerability, and appreciation of multiple perspectives. Through analysis of poetry by Lope de Vega, Jaime Sabines, and Yehuda Halevi, alongside artworks by Diego Velázquez, Francisco Goya, and Pablo Picasso, the film connects themes of empathy, suffering, identity, and healing to contemporary clinical practice. In this oral history interview conducted on June 5, 2026, in Harlingen, Texas, Nydia Tapia-Gonzales (b. 1962, Matamoros, Tamaulipas) reflects on her bicultural life along the U.S.–Mexico border and her long engagement with architecture, tourism, and historic preservation in the Rio Grande Valley.

Born and raised in Matamoros’s Colonia Jardín while attending schools in Brownsville (Colegio Don Bosco and Incarnate Word Academy), Tapia-Gonzales describes a fluid childhood spent moving between the two cities. She discusses her early fascination with architecture—sparked by her grandmother’s traditional house, mid-century modern homes in Matamoros, and her father’s newspaper work—as well as her teenage work …

This research offers unique insights into the creation and development of the Chumash Heritage National Marine Sanctuary (N.M.S.) with a focus on indigenous populations’ roles (primarily Chumash and Costanoan). In this episode, I analyze what makes this NMS different from every NMS precluding it, how it recognizes a new goal in conservation (thrivability), and the areas in which improvements still must be made to authentically include and honor indigenous voices.

This oral history transcript (dated June 4, 2026, Laguna Vista, TX) features Charles A. “Chuck” Malloy III, a prominent South Texas horticulturist, Master Gardener, and longtime President of the Palm Society of South Texas. Interviewed by Logan Dovalina for the Rio Grande Valley Legacy Anthology, Vol. 1, Malloy recounts his life journey—from his 1953 birth in Tallahassee, Florida, as a military “Army brat,” early inspiration from his grandfather’s forestry and camellia work, and youthful gardening experiences, to military service during Vietnam, college on the GI Bill, and a full career followed by retirement in 2013.
