Anoxic brain injury (ABI) is a non-traumatic injury; may result from cardiac arrest, suffocation, drowning, choking, and other acute causes. ABI often results in persistent neurologic changes and developmental abilities. These include vision, speech, swallow, walking, and other areas of daily living.  The severity of injury is variable, and in the most severely affected families and medical providers weigh life-prolonging interventions such as tracheostomy, despite the potential for persistent neurologic impairment. These decisions are difficult for parents and providers alike, and long-term outcomes are limited when compared to outcomes in children with premature lung disease or traumatic brain injury. Transesophageal Echocardiograms (TEE) are used to evaluate the heart more clearly, especially if a Transthoracic Echocardiogram (TTE) is not clear. However, the procedure requires sedation, and complications can arise as a result. The necessity of the TEE must be determined to ensure unnecessary risks are not taken. Our study investigated adult patients from January 2024 to March 2024 (n=300) who received TEEs because of endocarditis (n=59) or stroke (n=24). We determined the necessity of the TEE in endocarditis patients by assessing variables such as cardiac device, strain of pathogen, whether the TTE was diagnostic, and whether the TEE provided additional …

Volumetric muscle loss (VML) remains a major clinical challenge because skeletal muscle possesses limited regenerative capacity following severe injury, and there are currently no clinically approved biological agents capable of restoring functional muscle tissue. Therefore, the development of alternative regenerative strategies that locally stimulate endogenous repair mechanisms is of significant interest. In this preliminary study, we investigated electrospun PCL/cellulose acetate nanofiber scaffolds as localized delivery platforms for two novel small molecules, SK5 and SK4, which are hypothesized to enhance skeletal muscle regeneration through electrochemical signaling and activation of the Wnt signaling pathway. Comparison Of Postoperative Clinical Outcomes Following Human Breast Milk Versus Formula Feeding In Infants Undergoing Congenital Heart Surgery, Caden Anderjaska, Monalisha Elango, Sarah O'Neil, Jeffrey D. Salomon

Infants with congenital heart disease undergoing cardiopulmonary bypass often develop intestinal barrier dysfunction, microbial dysbiosis, and systemic inflammation that may impair postoperative recovery. This retrospective cohort study compared postoperative outcomes between infants receiving human breast milk (n = 15) and formula (n = 15) after congenital heart surgery. Clinical, microbiome, inflammatory, and gut barrier data were analyzed. Infants fed human breast milk demonstrated greater bacterial diversity, reduced gut barrier dysfunction and inflammation, shorter intensive care unit and hospital lengths of stay, and lower vasoactive-inotropic scores compared with formula-fed infants. Mitochondria-derived extracellular vesicles (EVs) that have recently emerged as important mediators and biomarkers of neurodegenerative diseases. Changes in their abundance and molecular cargo may serve as sensitive indicators of mitochondrial stress, dysfunction, and cellular health. This study validates the efficiency and reproducibility of our rat brain mitovesicle isolation protocol. Furthermore, it aims to elucidate how mitochondrial signaling, reflected by mitovesicle characteristics and cargo, is altered following social defeat stress and whether these effects are further exacerbated by HIV infection. These findings may provide novel insights into the role of mitochondrial dysfunction in HIV-associated neurocognitive impairment and stress-related neuropathology.

Pediatric electrophysiology procedures are complex and require thorough planning and coordination among physicians, anesthesia providers, and nursing staff. In the following cases, quality improvement receives recognition, but these moments, specifically in pediatric EP labs, lack a standardized data-collection method. By creating a standardized “Quality Moment,” we can better analyze patterns and identify opportunities for positive clinical improvement.

The United States and China are prone to systematic cognitive and cultural biases that distort their mutual perceptions. Addressing these biases through cultural education and professional development is essential to overcoming blind spots in understanding the United States’ primary competitor. By applying dynamic constructivist theories from cross-cultural psychology to national security, this monograph builds on existing scholarship to reveal specific cognitive asymmetries between Western and East Asian observers. Differences such as holism, dialecticism, social inference, and perspective taking reflect the cultural lenses through which security actors perceive their competitors’ actions and intentions, but US observers often overlook the cultural factors …

• Politically, the NPSC ensures that China’s Navy remains loyal to the CCP with Xi Jinping at its core. Administratively, it ultimately directs personnel, training, procurement, logistics, fiscal management, readiness, and modernization.

From Overwhelmed to Empowered is a program developed an occupation-based emotional regulation program for young adult women with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and/or autism spectrum disorder (ASD) during the transition to adulthood. The purpose of the project was to address the need for interventions that support emotional regulation as a foundation for meaningful social participation, independence, and successful role engagement.

The project involved the development and pilot implementation of an eight-week program consisting of weekly 60-minute group sessions and individualized coaching sessions. Remediation of improperly plugged and abandoned oil and gas wells has drawn substantial federal funding, but identifying which historical wells retain a living responsible party is a prerequisite to remediation.  Using Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission records, we resolved the 178 distinct operators of record on thousands of plugged and abandoned wells and spatially and temporally mapped Alaska's plugged and abandoned well population.

Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) increases a mother's risk of developing type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) later in life and can affect an infant's future health. Breastfeeding can help improve a mother's blood sugar control and may lower her future risk of diabetes, but many mothers with GDM do not know about these benefits. This quality improvement (QI) project evaluated a standardized education program on breastfeeding and diabetes prevention for postpartum mothers with GDM at the Family Birthing Center at St. Joseph's Medical Center (SJMC) in Stockton, California.
