Hospice Social Workers In The Death With Dignity Process, Lisa M. Carter Jan 2021

Hospice Social Workers In The Death With Dignity Process, Lisa M. Carter

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Hospice social workers are in an ethical conundrum due to the contrast between honoring clients’ self-determined life closure and hospice organization prescribed non-participation in requests for physician-assisted death. The National Hospice and Palliative Care Association and the International Hospice and Palliative Care Association have issued position statements that the hospice philosophy of care is to provide comfort and reduce suffering, not to hasten death. Social workers are bound by a code of ethics to honor patient choice in end-of-life decisions. This generic qualitative study gives voice to hospice social workers in the Pacific Northwest regarding their motivations and responses to …

The Impact Of Midwifery On Infant And Maternal Outcomes Among Black Mothers, Joann Honoré Jan 2021

The Impact Of Midwifery On Infant And Maternal Outcomes Among Black Mothers, Joann Honoré

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

According to recent studies, disparities are prevalent in maternal and fetal outcomes between Black and White mothers in the United States. Researchers have established that using a midwife versus other healthcare practitioners can elicit positive maternal and fetal outcomes for Black mothers. However, no within-race research has been conducted exploring midwifery as an insulating factor against these disparities. The purpose of this quantitative retrospective cohort study was to explore the impact of midwifery on infant and maternal outcomes compared to outcomes associated with other prenatal care models/caregivers among Black mothers in California using secondary data. The ecological model was used …

This basic qualitative study was conducted to explore perceptions and experiences of administrators of U.S. 4-year colleges regarding tracking and predicting retention. The conceptual framework was based upon the Attaran analytics model and the three V model. Both involve decision-making perspectives seen frequently in higher education. The research question guided exploration of the perceptions and experiences of higher education administrators of 4-year U.S. colleges in terms of the application of student data for tracking …

Somali Remittance Companies’ Transition To Islamic Banks, Ali Abdi Farah Jan 2021

Somali Remittance Companies’ Transition To Islamic Banks, Ali Abdi Farah

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Somalia’s financial industry is transforming. Some remittance companies havetransformed into Islamic banks, which was not easy because the remittance companies lacked the technology, finance, and human capital necessary to make the banks sustainable. The purpose of this descriptive phenomenological study was to explore the lived experiences of a sample of leaders of Somali remittance companies that were transformed into Islamic banks. A three-step conceptual framework consisting of goal, process, and outcome guided the inquiry. The research question concerned the lived experiences …

Child Abuse Reporting By Mandated Reporters In Schools, Kliche Adebanjo Jan 2021

Child Abuse Reporting By Mandated Reporters In Schools, Kliche Adebanjo

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Child maltreatment has proven to be a mainstream issue in the United States, with millions of children being referred to state welfare systems for investigation or alternative response intervention. Research has identified mandated reporters as being responsible for reporting the majority of these cases. Amongst those identified as mandated reporters, education personnel refer the greatest number of children for suspicion of child abuse or neglect, partly because of their ongoing contact daily; however, many of the cases they report are unsubstantiated. Past research findings have concluded that mandated reporters in schools lacked proper child abuse training. The purpose of this …

Intelligence Readiness And Operational Capability Of The National Guard Within The U.S., Jose Felipe Perez

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The National Guard has a highly specialized and operable intelligence force that can be useful to the communities it serves, and how that intelligence can be best used has been the focus of scholars in recent years. Researchers have demonstrated, however, that such integration of intelligence is a daunting task due to many barriers and misconceptions. Researchers have as yet been unable to establish how this might best be accomplished and those barriers diminished. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to define the National Guard’s potential roles and examine their possible integration into the domestic Intelligence Community. Theories …

Association Between Food Insecurity And Influenza Outcome In The United States., Sabrina Fiona Pink

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

AbstractThe influenza virus is one of the most commonly occurring respiratory viral infections in the world. The outer capsule of the virus contains 18H proteins and 11N proteins, which allows the virus to reform in over 100 different strands and outperform the vaccine. Despite efforts to improve access to care and reduce vaccine inequities; the Center for Disease Control and Prevention estimates 9-45 million documented influenza-related illnesses, 140,000 to 810,000 hospitalization, and 64,000 deaths yearly. Invariant Structural Features Of Retrograde Amnesia Affected Memory, Daniel K. Burch Jan 2021

Invariant Structural Features Of Retrograde Amnesia Affected Memory, Daniel K. Burch

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Traumatized individuals may use one or several emotional defensive strategies to cope with their experience; one method is via autobiographical amnesia which may influence the efficacy of amnesiac patients’ psychological adjustment during a sensitive period. Little research has addressed the potential of how emotionally invariant structural features may impact the reconsolidation of autobiographical memory, which in turn may support patients to complete successfully psychotherapeutic treatment or intervention. This phenomenological study addressed how lived experiences (i.e., invariant emotional and behavioral conscious states) may play into patients’ transformational memory of some or all of the traumatizing event details. To answer these questions, …

The Predictive Relationship Of Allostatic Load In Asthma, Mohamed Mustafa Hassan Jan 2021

The Predictive Relationship Of Allostatic Load In Asthma, Mohamed Mustafa Hassan

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Research on populations emphasizes the influence of allostatic overload, a marker of biophysical and biochemical stress, in driving adverse health outcomes. Unknown is the impact of allostatic load and its cardiovascular, metabolic, and inflammatory components as they pertain to asthma prevalence in U.S. populations. Specifically, there is a need to understand the nature of the relationship between allostatic load and asthma in light of confounders such as socioeconomic status, race, education, and gender. Using Bronfenbrenner’s bioecological model as a theoretical underpinning and binary logistic regression as a statistical modality, the predictive relationship between allostatic load and asthma was examined in …

The Diffusion Of Innovation In A Math Professional Learning Community, Daphne Shannon Kahn-Wiley

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

AbstractIn a southern U.S. suburban middle school, officials required the implementation of professional learning communities (PLCs) to improve student achievement in math. The purpose of this exploratory case study was to examine teachers’ and school officials’ perceptions of the math PLC process using Rogers’s diffusion of innovation (DOI) framework and archival documents to determine reasons for the challenges …

The purpose of this study, guided by the Chronic Care Model, was to determine if there were differences in quality of life (QoL) for persons with SLE participating in an …
