How Transformational Leaders Increase Nurse Retention And Decrease Attrition, Charlie Henry Middlebrooks Wilson

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated the problem of nurse attrition, which negatively impacted the lives of nurses, decreased patients’ perception of their healthcare, and increased the cost of healthcare. Facility administrators who lack strategies to decrease nurse turnover may lose their ability to provide quality nursing services in their facility and control their costs of care. Grounded in the transformational leadership theory, the purpose of this qualitative multiple case study was to explore the strategies private medical treatment facility administrators use to decrease nurse attrition. Five private medical treatment facility administrators located in Southern Texas completed semistructured, open-ended interviews, and three …

Novice Nurses’ Perceptions And Expectations Of What Constitutes Nursing Practice, Mcfrances Catherine George Jan 2022

Novice Nurses’ Perceptions And Expectations Of What Constitutes Nursing Practice, Mcfrances Catherine George

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

AbstractAfter completing preceptorship programs, novice nurses work independently to provide patient care at the bedside. Novice nurses may leave bedside nursing with a minimum of 1 year of experience, resulting in vacant bedside nurse positions. These vacant positions are a problem because this could lead to low patient satisfaction, higher patient mortality rates, and failure to rescue in emergent cases. The purpose of this study was to explore the perceptions and expectations of nursing practice related to performance, demands, and requirements from novice nurses. Afaf Meleis's 1960 transition theory guided the understanding of novice nurses' perceptions and expectations of nursing …

Exploring Systemic Reform In Criminal Justice For Afro-Americans Based On Critical Policy Ethnography, Cozetta Butts Lamore

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The persistent disproportionate rates of Afro-American involvement within the criminal justice system at all levels have resulted in historic levels of unexplained mass incarceration. Despite federal guidance, the pandemic of unexplained mass incarceration persists. Some studies have noted that the lack of academic attention may be one of the primary reasons for the lack of change. Others have noted the need for centering and lifting the perspective of those who have been most impacted by these racial disparities. The intent of this study was to offer a qualitative close-up examination and analysis from the perspective of impacted populations. The ecological …

Socialization Within Homeschooling, Ruth Leiter Jan 2022

Socialization Within Homeschooling, Ruth Leiter

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

AbstractThere is limited research on how homeschooled children socialize and how homeschooling parents view their socialization practices. More research could help parents be more effective in providing socialization experiences to enhance homeschooling. This study was conducted to develop a better understanding of parents’ perceptions of how homeschooling affects the socialization of their elementary school-aged children. The research questions also explored in what ways parents make socialization a component of homeschooling practices. Medlin’s three foci of socialization (i.e., social activity, influence, and exposure) were used as the conceptual framework. Using a basic qualitative approach, semi structured interviews were conducted with eight …

Examining Health Care Utilization Among Adult Heart Disease Patients With Self-Reported Depressive Symptoms, Courtney R. Lockett

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Health care costs are most commonly concentrated among small groups of high-cost patients, or high utilizers. Many of these patients receive unnecessary and ineffective care and often critical health care needs can go unmet, even when substantial care from multiple sources is received. Thus, there is a need to look into high utilizing patients for not only quality improvement but also effective resource allocation. The operational problem for health care administrators is managing resources and improving quality of care by targeting specific medical conditions that may be high utilizers of medical resources. The purpose of this study was to identify …
