School Officials' Perceptions Of Threat Assessment Programs, William Ward
School Officials' Perceptions Of Threat Assessment Programs, William Ward
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Acts of targeted violence on school grounds, and most notably school shootings, continue to occur and are a serious concern for many people. Behavioral threat assessment programs are one method being used to address this problem, and while considerable research has been conducted on threat assessment programs, very little research has been conducted on how school officials implement, operate, or understand these programs. A more informed awareness of how school officials perceive the implementation, operation, and usefulness of threat assessment programs may provide insight into ways to improve the implementation and management of these programs. This was a qualitative phenomenological …

Hide Or Seek? Paradigms Of Publicized Police Killings And The Paradox Of Police Calls, Dr. Ty Woods
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Police departments and the 911 emergency call system were created for public safety purposes. However, when a 911 call summoning police for assistance leads to another 911 call involving a deceased victim of a police encounter, public safety seems lacking. Many citizens vicariously witness or view fatal police encounters through the lens of extant media information, and how the public perceives media coverage can negate citizen trust and confidence in law enforcement. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore the influence of perceived media coverage of police-caused deaths of unarmed Black men and its impact on the inclination …

Nursing Knowledge And Breastfeeding Education, Mary Aguirre
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Healthy People 2020 breastfeeding goal immediately after birth of 81.9% was surpassed in 2016, with approximately 83.8% of babies breastfed shortly after delivery. However, by seven days post birth, this number decreased to 82.9%, reduced even more for infants who were exclusively breastfed to 64.7%. Local research has shown that breastfeeding decreases at one week after discharge, which may be due, in part, to the lack of nurses' knowledge related to breastfeeding. This lack of knowledge related to breastfeeding by the nurses, in turn, may negatively impact the support staff …

Community Perceptions Of Syringe Service Programs In Charleston, West Virginia: A Qualitative Socioecological Perspective, Kenya M. Burton
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
In rural areas of the United States, people who inject drugs (PWID) experience an array of obstacles to accessing adequate healthcare. Locations with high rates of drug use normally offer more healthcare options, including needle exchange programs but, in some communities, there is resistance to providing this kind of care. This increases mortality, morbidity, cost, and adds to the stigma experienced by this vulnerable group. The experiences of people with substance dependency, including PWID, has been widely explored throughout studies that reflect a need for increased support. However, the perspectives of the community, especially in rural areas, though equally important, …

Perceived Teacher Self-Care Influence On Beliefs About Teacher Persistence During Covid-19, Tamarah Lishawn Davis
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Teaching has never been an easy profession, but the swift transition from in-person to digital instruction during the COVID-19 pandemic made it significantly more difficult. Between a global pandemic and a nation's racial reckoning, teachers were forced to juggle work, family, and student responsibilities. While there were suggested tips on how to practice self-care, the findings on self-care have been conflicting, and there is a scarcity of research on the role that teacher self-care played in persistence for classroom teachers during the COVID-19 pandemic. The purpose of this basic qualitative study was to explore reported teacher self-care practices and how …

Promoting Healthier Treatment Outcomes In Obese Cancer Patients Taking High Dose Methotrexate, Carly Dell'ova
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Cancer and obesity rates continue to rise, creating enormous public heath burdens to the individual and at the national and global levels, reducing quality of life, and increasing spending. Moreover, the relationships between cancer and obesity are not well understood. A commonly used chemotherapy for several types of cancer is high dose methotrexate (HDMTX). Along with chemotherapy, especially at high doses, comes toxicity to specific organs and the entire body. However, limited research has been conducted on obese cancer patients as they are often excluded from clinical studies. Practitioners need to better understand how to dose these patients to provide …

Treatment-Seeking Experiences Of Ethiopian Women With Pelvic Organ Prolapse, Frehiwot Derso
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractPelvic organ prolapse (POP) is a gynecological health issue that negatively affects women’s lives globally and specifically in countries like Ethiopia where health care-related resources and infrastructures are limited. In remote areas of Ethiopia, women lack basic knowledge of POP and do not have the resources to access care and treatment that might be available. As a result, seeking treatment typically happens after years of suffering. Using a qualitative phenomenological method, this study addressed the treatment-seeking experiences for POP among women aged 30-60 in North Ethiopia. Fifteen women with POP were selected using purposive sampling at the University of Gondar …
