The Relationship Between Socioeconomic Factors And Obesity In Adults (25-54 Years) In Guam In 2020, Perinne O'Brien
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
In Guam, a United States Pacific Island territory, the rate of obesity in adults continues to rise. Relationships between obesity and six socioeconomic factors (health care coverage, education level, employment status, home ownership, household income, and marital status) in adults 25 to 54 years of age living in Guam in 2020 were explored. Because obesity may be affected at multiple levels of influence, the socioecological model grounded this research. Secondary data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System was used to carry out a quantitative, cross-sectional study. Complex samples binary logistic regression analyses were …

Faculty-Student And Student-Student Connections Amidst The Covid-19 Pandemic, Fatma Ouled Salem
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The COVID-19 pandemic expedited the shift toward distance education by forcing institutions to adapt to the limitations of social distancing mandates. This resulted in a general sense of disconnection and isolation, compounding the other adverse effects of the pandemic. Since faculty-student and student-student connections are consistently identified as best practices in distance counselor education, the aim of this descriptive phenomenological study was to describe the lived experiences of counselor educators during the COVID-19 pandemic relating to faculty-student and student-student connections. A phenomenological framework was used to suspend presuppositions of the phenomenon and to describe the lived experiences of participants. In-depth …

AbstractThis project sought to enhance the care offered in a local clinic to individuals with an intellectual and developmental disability (IDD) during the COVID-19 pandemic. Individuals with IDD are faced with the challenges of coping with some social conditions. Mainly waiting for extended periods in a doctor’s office can be challenging. To reduce this population’s waiting time, a staff education program was developed to address this concern. Currently, this local clinic did not have a prescreening exercise that would meet the needs of this population. This DNP project aimed to develop a staff education program for staff in a primary …

Educational Material For Nurses In Managing Patients With Neurogenic Bladder, Simone Yamdaare Redboy
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractNeurogenic bladder (NB) is common in patients with traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, spinal bifida, and stroke. Many patients who have these diseases struggle to control their bladder. NB can be defined as the inability to completely empty the bladder. For managing the bladder, clinicians usually opt for using an indwelling urinary catheter for those patients. Indwelling urinary catheters are a source of infection and do not help the patient regain continence. Research findings showed that frequent toileting and monitoring with bladder scanning benefited patients with NB and helped patients restore continence. To address a knowledge gap, this new …

Evacuation Emergency Management During Hurricane Katrina: A Decision-Making Analysis, Kimberli Roessing-Anderson
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Emergency management policy is useful when it involves the stakeholders it serves in the decision-making process. The death toll for Hurricane Katrina in 2005 was almost 2,000 people. Many of the dead and injured lived in low-income communities. There were significant challenges with the evacuation of residents of the Ninth Ward of New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina. Like many public policies, emergency management has evolved over time. Periodically, a catalyst event, such as Hurricane Katrina, shapes public opinion and eventually public policy and its administration. Punctuated equilibrium theory was used to examine the decision-making process of Ninth Ward residents to …

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
One of the challenges brought on by the recent COVID-19 pandemic has been the promotion and use of telehealth services. While recent data from Medicare has depicted an increase in this new service delivery modality (over 4,000%), there has been a stark disparity in the use of telehealth services in lower socioeconomic demographics, such as rural and underrepresented communities, and among Medicare recipients. Equitable, consistent, and optimal service expansion of the telehealth modality requires therapists and leaders of behavioral health organizations to develop and deploy creative tactics to remedy this disparity. In this case study, leaders of Miss Emma's Behavioral …

The purpose of this study was to understand the relationship between readmission rate, discharge disposition, and rural access for patients who were admitted to an inpatient state-owned behavioral health center with a diagnosis indicating the patient is seriously mentally ill. The theoretical framework …
Veterans’ Experience With Social Acceptance After Beginning Civilian Employment, Dr. Mike Smith
Veterans’ Experience With Social Acceptance After Beginning Civilian Employment, Dr. Mike Smith
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractWhen an individual feels excluded from a group that they seek to be a part of, they experience negative physiological and psychological outcomes. The innate human need to be socially accepted is identified and described in elements of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs and McClelland’s human motivation theory. Social acceptance has also been shown to play an integral role in areas of communication, organizational commitment, performance, and team cohesiveness. However, it is not known if social acceptance directly impacts a veteran’s ability and desire to maintain civilian employment after transitioning from active-duty service. Therefore, the purpose of this qualitative, phenomenological study …
