Isocitrate Dehydrogenase-1 Mutation As A Prognostic Factor In Recurrent Glioblastoma, Haroon R. Hashmi
Isocitrate Dehydrogenase-1 Mutation As A Prognostic Factor In Recurrent Glioblastoma, Haroon R. Hashmi
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Glioblastoma (GBM) is an aggressive form of brain cancer that has a high recurrence rate and very poor prognosis. The prognostic value of various molecular markers (e.g., IDH 1 mutation, MGMT promoter methylation, etc.) and clinical factors (e.g., age, KPS, surgery and chemotherapy) has been studied in GBM after initial diagnosis but not as extensively in the recurrent GBM. Utilizing a retrospective cohort design, based on quantitative data collected through medical chart reviews, and the conceptual framework of outcomes research in oncology, this study evaluated the prognostic value of IDH-1 mutation in recurrent GBM in the context of key predictor …

Lived Experiences Of Parents With Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder Transitioning To Adulthood, Jane Havens
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractCurrently, there is little known about the parent experiences of transitioning their child with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) to adulthood from a qualitative perspective. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to explore parents’ lived experiences as their ASD children transition to adulthood. This study was grounded in symbolic interactionism, which includes tenets of how interactions with others provide a catalyst for meaning development and subsequent human action. A phenomenological design was used with a purposeful sample of 10 parents of children with ASD transitioning to adulthood. Interviews were conducted through phone calls to explore participant perspectives transitioning their …

Lived Experiences Of Returning Service Members Reintegrating With Their Children On The Autism Spectrum, Bridget Hennessy
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Military deployments of a caregiver have a powerful and potentially damaging impact of the attachment bond between the service member and their child with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Research has shown that children with ASD react to their caregiver’s departure, that they direct more social behavior to the caregiver than to a stranger, and that many of them increase their proximity seeking behavior after separation from the caregiver. Military children with ASD were underrepresented in previous attachment and reintegration research. This qualitative study explored the lived of experience of the military caregiver attaching or reattaching to their child with ASD …

The Lived Experiences Of Avoiding Recidivism Among African American Male (First-Time) Former Offenders, Jeff Hines
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractThe United States has a high recidivism rate within its criminal population, especially among men of African American descent. However, within this population, some first-time former offenders have used successful approaches to avoid re-incarceration. The objective of this study was to investigate how these first-time former offenders desist from crime and avoid recidivism. This was a phenomenological study, utilizing the Desistance Theory as a framework, to explore how these men survived the consequences of post-incarceration and remained crime-free. In-depth, semi-structured, open-ended interviews were conducted with six African American male first-time former offenders (age 25 and older) who were not on …

Retrospective And Forecasting Analysis Of Increased Long Term Care Demand In Niagara, Breanne Alissa Hines
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
A problem exists within the Canadian healthcare system as many patients experience longer lengths of stay (LOS) in acute care (AC) and complex care (CC) beds within hospitals because of a lack of long term care (LTC) facilities. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the extra days patients wait for placement and assess the benefits of increasing the number of LTC beds. The theoretical framework used was the four-level model of the health care system. Research questions involved 2017-2019 data for the number of LTC beds required to eliminate waits and evaluate beds needed in the future. This …

Race And Proportionality Of Traffic Stops By Four Police Departments In Demographically Distinct Communities., Danielle Sheree Lessard
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Most police departments in the southcentral region of the United States do not racially represent the communities they serve. This lack of diversity has led some communities to perceive law enforcement as racially biased. The purpose of this quantitative, non-experimental, correlational, cross-sectional study was to assess the validity of this perception based upon traffic stop data. Using representative bureaucracy theory, this study examined the traffic stop summary data of four police departments in the southcentral region of the U.S. for 2016-2019. The study aimed to determine if a police department’s racial demographics impacted the stop proportionately to the racial representation …

Racial Capitalism And The African American Experience Entering The Cannabis Industry, Ayoka Medlock-Nurse
Racial Capitalism And The African American Experience Entering The Cannabis Industry, Ayoka Medlock-Nurse
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The cannabis industry in the United States is a competitive 16.9-billion-dollar industry built on private ownership, access to resources, operation for profit, and racism. However, under current cannabis policies, African American entrepreneurs are not benefiting from ownership and employment within the cannabis industry. Though some policies claim that the current medicinal and adult recreation laws will rectify racial disparities in arrest and ownership regarding cannabis sales, thus far, there are no sufficient increases to ownership, employment, or effective equity programs in place that accurately address racial disparities and the public policy barriers that keep African Americans excluded from the cannabis …

Organizational change theory was the conceptual framework that guided this study. Data gathered from the Integrated Security Management System helped answer the central research question regarding …
Evaluating Compliance With The Produce Safety Rule And Managing Mycotoxins, Yvette May Molajo
Evaluating Compliance With The Produce Safety Rule And Managing Mycotoxins, Yvette May Molajo
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Foodborne diseases are the cause of many illnesses that occur from foods that contain mycotoxins. Mycotoxins are produced from fungi and are environmental and carcinogenic agents that contaminate agricultural foods during preharvest and postharvest conditions. While researchers have conducted many studies on mycotoxin occurrence and production, there is a significant gap in the current literature regarding which environmental factors could put farmers’ ability to remain in compliance with the Food Safety Modernization Act’s Produce Safety Rule at risk. Therefore, the purpose of this quantitative study was to investigate which environmental factors could put farmers’ ability to remain in compliance with …

Risk Factors For Foodborne Illness Outbreaks In Retail Food Establishments, Brendalee Viveiros
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Despite policies and interventions over the last two decades, foodborne illness remains a significant public health concern. According to the CDC’s Foodborne Disease Outbreak Surveillance System, 60% of reported foodborne illness outbreaks involved food that was prepared at a restaurant. Reducing foodborne illness outbreaks that occur at restaurants would have a significant impact on the overall number of foodborne illnesses that occur each year. Reducing Readmissions For Patients Hospitalized With Congestive Heart Failure, Morgan B. Morgan
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Congestive heart failure (CHF) is the leading cause for readmission in hospitals and has a
high mortality and morbidity rate, with implications for hospitals and third-party payers.
Readmissions of patients with CHF are related to inadequate patient knowledge at
discharge, inadequate follow-up with a health care provider, and treatment regimen
nonadherence. Patients report feeling ill prepared to provide appropriate self-care during
the transition from inpatient hospital stay to the home setting. One strategy to assess the
patient's understanding following discharge education is through a process known as
teach-back. The purpose of this quality improvement initiative guided by Knowles's
theory was …
