The Experience Of Being An Older Online Graduate Student, Shirley A. Losiewicz
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The number of older adult online students (over age 30) has continued to grow over the past 10 years, but their perceptions of how the online experience affects their family and friendship relationships were unknown. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to examine the experiences of 6 graduate students over the age of 30 years enrolled in an online program, using the lens of Bowen’s family systems theory and Elder’s life course theory. The research questions focused on the experiences of being an older online graduate student, including motivation, factors that helped or hindered adjustment, perceived stress, social …
First Responders' Experience During The Initial Chaos In A Large-Scale Event, Amanda Jo Reese
First Responders' Experience During The Initial Chaos In A Large-Scale Event, Amanda Jo Reese
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
There is little focus on how first responders (e.g., firefighters, police officers, medical staff) experience the initial chaos immediately following a large-scale disaster. Previous research indicated that understanding the initial chaos of disaster response is imperative to keeping first responders safe and healthy. First responders may also reduce the perception of chaos by implementing situational awareness skills. This research study explored (a) how first responders experienced the initial chaos immediately following a large-scale disaster, (b) how first responders experienced their emotions (good or bad) and what, if any, emotions were present, (c) how their emotions affected job performance, and (d) …
Factors That Hinder African American Students From Graduating From 4-Year Predominantly White Institutions, Laura M. Doug
Factors That Hinder African American Students From Graduating From 4-Year Predominantly White Institutions, Laura M. Doug
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Although graduation rates at 4-year colleges and universities in the United States have increased in the last decade, African American students do not graduate at the same rate of their White counterparts from 4-year Predominantly White Institutions (PWIs). The purpose of this phenomenological qualitative study was to explore issues that hinder African American junior and senior students from graduating from a 4-year PWI. The theoretical framework for this study examined Karkouti's theory that African American students' success is impacted by an environment that promotes positive learning, cross-racial interactions, and one that is positively associated with students' educational outcomes. The research …

A Phenomenological Study On Adoption Disclosure Experienced By Adult Adoptees, Carmen H. Leggett
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractThis research addressed the psychological experiences that adoption disclosure has on adoptees and their systems. In this phenomenological study eight interviews were conducted that consisted of four females and four males guided by general systems theory. Interviews were conducted via video conference, telephone, and email/telephone. Data saturation was achieved after the fourth interview as no new information had surfaced and similar responses were being echoed repeatedly from the participants. However, the interviews continued because the stories being shared by the participants were invaluable and to ensure the sampling criteria of eight participants was met. The interviews were transcribed, and several …

The data analysis included contingency tables and …
Adolescent Suicidal Ideation And Parental Perception, Parenting Style, And Parental Denial, Julie Mann
Adolescent Suicidal Ideation And Parental Perception, Parenting Style, And Parental Denial, Julie Mann
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Adolescent suicidal ideation is a substantial health concern in the United States, from both mental and physical perspectives. Parent-child connectedness (PCC) ostensibly plays a considerable role in reducing the problem. Along with parents of youth who are struggling with suicide, mental health care providers and school administrators would appreciate understanding more effective strategies for eliminating adolescent suicidal ideation. This cross-sectional, quantitative study sought a statistically significant relationship between PCC measured as parental perception, parenting style, and parental denial (independent variables) and the dependent variable of adolescent suicidal ideation. Bandura’s social cognitive theory, Baumrind’s parenting style theory, and Mowder’s parent development …

Nurses’ Social Distancing Behaviors Toward Patients With Borderline Personality Disorder, Nicole York
Nurses’ Social Distancing Behaviors Toward Patients With Borderline Personality Disorder, Nicole York
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Nurses often fear interacting with patients diagnosed with borderline personality disorder (BPD) and use self-preservation distancing strategies that can exacerbate the BPD patient’s fear of abandonment, paranoia, self-harm, and relational conflict. Prior research identified individual predictors of nurses’ social distancing. This study used multivariable and multivariate correlational profiles of fear of violence and BPD bias that influence distance, reassessing, and constructive coping. Guided by social cognitive and appraisal transaction theories, data were collected from 113 nurses in a northwestern U.S. state on measures of interpersonal stress coping, attitudinal dispositions, perceived prevention of violence, perceived likelihood of future violence, and perceived …
Catholic And Evangelical Religious-Political Narratives About The Contraceptive Coverage Requirement Policy, Leah Marie Silverman
Catholic And Evangelical Religious-Political Narratives About The Contraceptive Coverage Requirement Policy, Leah Marie Silverman
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The intersection of religion and politics results in “wicked” policy problems for which evidence-based solutions are hard to find. An example is the Affordable Care Act's contraceptive coverage requirement (CCR). Evidence suggests that women and society benefit from increased access to contraceptives, but religious freedom objections have been effective in litigation to limit the CCR's reach. The purpose of this study was to explore the narrative elements and strategies used by Catholic and Evangelical stakeholders regarding the CCR, contraceptives, and religious freedom. Social constructionism and the narrative policy framework (NPF) provided the foundation for the study. Data collection included legal …

The purpose of this qualitative study was to examine how implicit-bias training influences the decision-making processes of police officers. More specifically, this study examined the perceptions of police officers regarding the …
Patient Satisfaction With Nursing Care Related To Hospital Magnet Designation, Sharon Haylett
Patient Satisfaction With Nursing Care Related To Hospital Magnet Designation, Sharon Haylett
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Many U.S. hospitals have historically failed to recognize nursing as essential to quality of care. Given the relationship between the patients' experiences, measured by the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS), and government reimbursement, stakeholders now value the role of nurses in the care experience. Some hospitals have pursued Magnet designation, which is a rigorous and costly process, in order to promote patient satisfaction through nurse autonomy and retention. The purpose of this study was to understand whether non-Magnet hospitals received similar HCAHPS scores. Expectancy disconfirmation theory provides a framework to understand the components of patient satisfaction …

Prior research has shown a correlation between public stigma and emergency responders' perceptions of mental health patients while providing care. However, research examining public stigma and emergency responders' perceptions of mental health patients is limited in rural areas. The purpose of this study was to explore possible relationships between the dependent variable, public stigma, and the independent variables: social distance, blameworthiness, and fear of unpredictable behavior. Link's modified labeling theory was the theoretical framework for this study. A sample of 92 emergency responders obtained from Facebook completed a questionnaire that consisted of three Likert scales. A multiple regression showed little …
A Narrative Study Focusing On Survivors Of Forced Labor Trafficking, Taras Nk Raggio
A Narrative Study Focusing On Survivors Of Forced Labor Trafficking, Taras Nk Raggio
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Throughout history, the media's rendering of slavery depicts vulnerable groups caught in a network of trafficking looking for a better life. Scholars of trafficking cite challenges in understanding the health care needs of domestic forced labor trafficking survivors in the United States. Seminal trafficking findings have shown that variations of trafficking affect the survivors' health after surviving trafficking. Therefore, in this qualitative, narrative inquiry I sought to understand how 8 survivors of forced labor trafficking, ages 25 years and older, described their health following trafficking beyond 5 years. The theory of social constructionism constituted the theoretical foundation, and the salutogenic …
