The purpose of this qualitative interpretative phenomenological analysis was to explore perspectives on dignity in death for end-of-life inmates through the lens of nine prison medical professionals. Concepts of dignity provided the conceptual framework for the study. Data were collected from one-to-one audio-recorded Zoom interviews and reflective literature articles. Axial coding and thematic data analysis were used to identify five themes: committed to their vocation, lack of services in administering proper health care, institutional barriers prohibiting death with dignity, …
Compassion And Empathy: Comparing Police Officers With And Without Military Experience, Harlyn Alexander Montealegre
Compassion And Empathy: Comparing Police Officers With And Without Military Experience, Harlyn Alexander Montealegre
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Interpersonal characteristics, including compassion and empathy, are an essential part of the relationship that police officers have with local communities. Historically, recruitment departments of law enforcement agencies have favored military veterans as candidates because of the similarities between the two professions, such as weapon handling and organizational structure. However, it is possible that prior military experience may negatively impact characteristics of compassion and empathy, given that military personnel are often exposed to conditions (e.g., combat) that can degrade compassion and empathy. The purpose of this study was to compare levels of compassion and empathy between police officers with and without …

A Case Study Of Senate Bill 123 Nonviolent Felony Offenders Suboxone Use, Jessica Scott
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
In 2003, a midwestern state passed legislation implementing a program with the goal of treating nonviolent felony offenders leaving prison sentences for more severe crimes. The current study examined legislation focusing on substance abuse treatment rather than incarceration. The purpose of this was to bridge this gap in knowledge by investigating the legislative session’s actions to aid members in the provision of services related to the Senate Bill 123 program. The central research question of this study examined the experiences of healthcare practitioners and addiction counselors associated with SB 123 nonviolent adult offenders requiring drug and alcohol treatment concerning Suboxone …
Cultural Responsiveness In Policing, Stacy Berry Workman
Cultural Responsiveness In Policing, Stacy Berry Workman
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Over the last decade, headlines have highlighted police-citizen conflicts. With the continuing change in communities to an increasingly diverse population, communication and interactions between officers and citizens must progress towards fairness and transparency. The delivery of culturally competent public safety services facilitates more favorable client outcomes, more effective interpersonal communication, and increased service satisfaction from clients. Although this is heavily stressed in public safety agencies and can decrease the possibility of tort liability for failing to provide adequate services or appropriate treatment, the emphasis varies. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore the policies and influences of law …

Motivators, Barriers, And Facilitators For Hispanic Females To Become Police Officers, Reynaldo Caban
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The loss of public trust in police institutions across the United States has increased and continues to grow as negative police interactions are broadcast on the news and social media outlets. Fueling the problem are police departments that are not representative of the communities they serve. Marginalized individuals are less likely to be heard by representatives of police departments, yet these individuals are needed to change negative perceptions. Hispanic females were selected for this study as part of those marginalized individuals. A generic qualitative approach was used to build this research with representative bureaucracy theory as the theoretical framework to …

Impact Of Social Barrier Removal On Primary Care Use By Managed Care Enrollees, Pamme Lyons-Taylor
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Personal health represents a complex relationship among social, physical, and emotional factors that can be influenced by health-seeking behaviors. Prior research indicates that greater use of preventive services leads to longer life and lower healthcare costs. For some populations, evidence suggests that social barriers hinder access to preventive services. To better understand the relationship between social factors and the other personal-health factors, de-identified healthcare claims and social service encounter data for 4,480 low-income individuals enrolled in Medicare Advantage or Managed Medicaid at one national health insurance were examined using a retrospective, quasi-experimental design for services rendered between October 1, 2014 …

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Recently there have been widely publicized reports of distrust and a lack of perceived legitimacy in communities across the United States for the police agencies that serve them. Scholars have explored perceptions of police legitimacy and the role of procedural justice in police-community interactions; however, there is a dearth of information concerning the policies of law enforcement agencies using psychological assessments to screen-in or screen-out applicants and the manner in which those agencies serve the community. The purpose of this mixed-methods study was to explore the manner in which one police agency using psychological assessments to screen applicants in and …
A Phenomenological Exploration Of How Nursing Experience Shapes The Transitional Performance Of Primary Care Nurse Practitioners, Helen Okeke
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractPoor access to healthcare and a shortage of primary care providers in underserved communities paved the way for reliance on advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs). This increased reliance on APRNs as primary care providers necessitates expanded public policy on APRN practice; however, information on APRN transitional experiences remains inadequate to inform policymakers effectively. Illinois’ Nurse Practice Act requires APRNs to incorporate the scope of practice of registered nurses into their practice but does not describe what that experience should be. Using Kanter’s theory of organizational structural empowerment and Benner’s novice to expert nursing model as theoretical lenses to ground the …

Police Officer Aggression During Police-Civilian Encounters And Effect On Civilian Perception, James Aaron Plank
Police Officer Aggression During Police-Civilian Encounters And Effect On Civilian Perception, James Aaron Plank
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Trust in the police by the public is the cornerstone of public safety. A lack of trust in the police discourages citizens from reporting criminal behavior, leading to increased crime rates. A lack of trust can be the result of inappropriate actions taken by officers in police-civilian encounters, as perceived by the citizen. Although increased professional standards and training have been implemented in police departments across the U.S., researchers have not demonstrated how aggressive police officer behavior affects the civilian perception of the officer’s actions. The purpose of this study was to determine if there is a relationship between police …

Assessing Online Content Attractiveness And The Next Generation Of Rural Law Enforcement Officers, Brandi M. Thomas
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The recruitment of law enforcement applicants has been a focus for scholars for many years, especially in rural areas. With the increased use of the Internet by younger generations, the problem for rural law enforcement administrators is a lack of online recruitment strategies tailored to younger applicants. Researchers have demonstrated that administrators in rural agencies recognize the challenges of recruiting the next generation of law enforcement officers. Furthermore, literature illustrates how the younger generation has predefined work preferences and uses online environments to search for ideal jobs. However, researchers have yet to establish how younger generations perceive website content and …

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The impact of voters’ moral development on trust in politicians is a rarely explored phenomenon among scholars studying why voters trust politicians. It is unknown whether voters’ moral development plays an influential role in their decisions to trust those they elect to public office, or if they simply respond to the best political show. The purpose of this study was to examine this phenomenon and determine whether voters’ moral development impacted their trust in politicians regardless of age, gender, education, income, and religion. The study surveyed 110 eligible voters in a midwestern city in the United States using two survey …
