Lived Experiences Involving Self-Efficacy Among African American Women Receiving Cardiac Peer Support, Shurnett Arnella Barrett
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death among African American (AA) women in the United States. While there have been advances and more widespread use of peer-to-peer (P2P) support strategies to improve self-management skills among CVD patients, these approaches have not affected AA women, who continue to die from heart disease at significantly high rates. The purpose of this study was to examine real-life experiences of AA women with hypertensive heart disease who receive P2P support and the effect of that support on self-efficacy and cardiac health. The health belief model and social cognitive learning theory were the …
Educating Oncology Nurses On Identifying And Managing Cancer-Related Distress, Rosemary Vivella Irish
Educating Oncology Nurses On Identifying And Managing Cancer-Related Distress, Rosemary Vivella Irish
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractUp to 50% of patients diagnosed with cancer will experience significant levels of distress. Cancer is related to psychological distress and can negatively impact recovery from surgery, increase treatment side effects, and decrease overall quality of life. The National Comprehensive Cancer Network recommended screening for distress as part of comprehensive cancer care. In the practice setting, there was a need for better assessment of distress in cancer patients. The purpose of this staff education project was to address a gap in practice regarding the lack of knowledge of screening for distress by providing education to oncology nurses on how to …

Strategies For Recruiting, Retaining, And Developing The Knowledge And Skills Of Behavioral Health Technicians, Shirley Ann Williams
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
To be effective, behavioral health organization leaders must recruit and retain behavioral health technicians (BHTs) to provide nonclinical services. The focus of this case study was on identifying strategies to promote the recruitment and retention of BHTs and to help these workers develop the knowledge and skills they need for effective job performance. The Baldrige Framework for Excellence was used to guide this case study of a behavioral health organization located in the southeastern United States. The organization had one residential substance use facility serving men and five serving women and experienced a constant shortage of BHTs. Data were collected …

Nonprofit Business And Management Challenges Encountered When Delivering Services And Fulfilling Organizational Missions, Becky A. Hammer
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Failure of nonprofit organizations (NPOs) causes negative impacts to community service users and the NPO workforce. Although the impact of NPO failure has been researched, a comprehensive understanding of business and organizational challenges from the NPO leaders’ perspective was not well documented. Learning more about these challenges may assist with understanding how to best support and solve them. The purpose of this qualitative single case study was to explore the business and management-related barriers and challenges NPO leaders encounter when delivering services and fulfilling organizational missions in the Greater Austin Metropolitan Statistical Area in Texas. The conceptual model included the …
Internal Population Displacement And Vaccination Completion, Malnutrition, And Respiratory Infections Among Children In The Central African Republic, Francois Xavier Batalingaya
Internal Population Displacement And Vaccination Completion, Malnutrition, And Respiratory Infections Among Children In The Central African Republic, Francois Xavier Batalingaya
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Forced displacement in fragile and conflict-affected countries has the potential to disrupt access to basic primary healthcare services such as immunization. The purpose of this study was to assess the association between internal population displacement and vaccination completion, malnutrition, and acute respiratory infections (ARIs) while controlling for maternal characteristics of wealth index, education level, and residence status in the Central African Republic. The socioecological model underpinned this cross-sectional study that used a secondary dataset collected in 2018 – 2019 and maintained by UNICEF. Descriptive statistics and logistic regression tests were used to analyze the data. The findings of this study …
Association Between Dietary Phytoestrogen Intake And Xenoestrogen Exposure And Estrogen-Dependent Cancers, Pisita Bolsue
Association Between Dietary Phytoestrogen Intake And Xenoestrogen Exposure And Estrogen-Dependent Cancers, Pisita Bolsue
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The role of circulating estrogens and the impact of lifetime exposure to multiple sources of exogenous estrogens as factors in carcinogenesis were not well understood. Research showed conflicting results when dietary phytoestrogen (PE) intake and xenoestrogen (XE) exposure occurred independently and when co-exposed. The purpose of this quantitative cross-sectional study was to investigate the association between dietary PE intake and XE exposure and the development of estrogen-dependent cancers in an epidemiological context. The advanced model of the epidemiology triangle was the theoretical framework for the current study in which binary logistic regression was employed on secondary data from the 2003–2006 …
Relationship Between Childhood Trauma, ,Adverse Childhood Experiences, And Self-Management Of Type 1 And Type 2 Diabetes, Deserie J. Otoole
Relationship Between Childhood Trauma, ,Adverse Childhood Experiences, And Self-Management Of Type 1 And Type 2 Diabetes, Deserie J. Otoole
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractPoorly controlled diabetes is the result of lack of self-care, which contributes to complications, ill quality in life, the rise in health care costs, and early death. The purpose of this quantitative, nonexperimental study was to examine the extent to which diabetes type (Type 1 and Type 2), childhood trauma, and adverse childhood experiences predict diabetes self-management (glucose management, dietary control, physical activity, health care use, total self-management). Contemporary trauma theory suggests that early childhood trauma results in negative health-related consequences in adulthood. Standard multiple regression analyses showed that (a) higher levels of physical neglect and emotional abuse predicted poorer …
Providing Diabetes Education To Improve Staff Nurses' Knowledge, Marcia A. Patterson
Providing Diabetes Education To Improve Staff Nurses' Knowledge, Marcia A. Patterson
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disease that affects over 34.2 million or 10.5% of the U.S. population and ranks as the seventh leading cause of death. Tennessee's diabetes prevalence rate is ranked 45th overall in the nation, with 14.9% of the population affected, and in the local area for this project, the rate is greater than 15%, creating a public health concern. Despite its prevalence, there is still a wide gap in knowledge among nurses on diabetes management. The practice-focused question for this project addressed whether a staff education program would improve nurses' knowledge regarding diabetes. The significant gap …
Pancreatic Cancer: Quantitative Study Investigating The Regional Risk Factors In North Carolina, Holly Marie Myers
Pancreatic Cancer: Quantitative Study Investigating The Regional Risk Factors In North Carolina, Holly Marie Myers
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Pancreatic cancer is the fourth-leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States, killing more than 90% of individuals diagnosed within 5 years. Due to the lack of signs and symptoms, 82% of all pancreatic cancer cases are diagnosed in terminal stages. As such, the most powerful method to reducing the morbidity and mortality of pancreatic cancer is to further investigate the risk factors. According to the theoretical framework of the ecosocial theory, long-term exposure to exposures to unfavorable socioecological and environmental factors serve as a “web of causation” for adverse health outcomes. Using data from the North Carolina Department …

A Staff Education Project On The Administration Of Clinical Practice Guidelines For The Treatment Of Obesity And Overweight Children And Adolescents, Emilia Ochiabuto Okoye
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractObesity among children and adolescents has reached epidemic proportions in the United States (U.S). Nurses in pediatric settings have a critical role to play in assessing and managing childhood obesity. The partner site for this project has a childhood obesity rate of 35% compared to the national average of 19%. However, the nursing staff lacked adequate knowledge, competence, and confidence in assessing and managing childhood obesity in line with the recommended guidelines. The problem was addressed by implementing the Clinical Practice Guideline for the Treatment of Obesity and Overweight Children and Adolescents via an education program. The program’s content was …

Grounded in stakeholder theory, the purpose of this qualitative single case study was to explore strategies restaurant business owners used to decrease food waste to maintain or increase profit. Participants in this study comprised five restaurant owners in a metropolitan suburb on the United States east coast who successfully reduced food waste in their operations to maintain or …
Exploring Care Recipients’ Health Conditions Influence On Caregivers And Caregivers’ Meaning Of Care Dependence, Yolanda Suarez-Calvo
Exploring Care Recipients’ Health Conditions Influence On Caregivers And Caregivers’ Meaning Of Care Dependence, Yolanda Suarez-Calvo
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Little is known about the ways in which caregivers are affected or influenced by their care recipients’ health conditions. Additionally, the meaning of care dependence for caregivers is also understudied. The purpose of this generic qualitative study was to examine caregivers’ affection/influence due to the physical and psychosocial health conditions of the individuals for whom they care. Further, the meaning of care dependence, from the perspectives of the caregivers, was sought. The theoretical framework to further this research was Montgomery and Kosloski’s (2009) caregiver’s identity theory The research question addressed the ways caregivers are affected or influenced by the care …
