Use Of Force And Perceptions Of Public Attitude Held By Police Trainers, Kenneth Lee Kinsey
Use Of Force And Perceptions Of Public Attitude Held By Police Trainers, Kenneth Lee Kinsey
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Police use-of-force is a topic of interest to most Americans. High-profile shootings of minority citizens and the increase in ambush death rates of police officers has been problematic by dividing society into segments of harsh critics of an entire profession or supporters of the nation's heroes. While use-of-force is highly researched, most existing work has typically forgone the examination of officer mindset in lieu of the more patent explanatory variables of race, sex, and method. The purpose of this study was to gain insight into the psychological influences of officer motivation from those responsible for providing instruction to police officers. …
Attribution And Attribution Error In Relationship To False Confessions, Michael L. Johnson
Attribution And Attribution Error In Relationship To False Confessions, Michael L. Johnson
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
False confessions are the most difficult type of confession to detect. Because the Reid interview and interrogation technique is the global gold standard for interviews, interrogations, and confessions, it is used to obtain confessions from suspects. However, the Reid method has been untested in regard to if it can detect false confessions to potentially eliminate wrongful convictions. The purpose of this qualitative study was to perform a content analysis of videos of confessions using several models that make up the Reid interview and interrogation technique. Utilizing attribution theory as a framework, these models were qualitatively assessed for their ability to …

Phenomenological Study On Social Workers With Children With Special Needs, Natasha Yvette Mike
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Parents with children with special needs experience challenges when caring for their children. These challenges may be uniquely affected by the parent's employment. Because social workers are in professional roles, understanding their lived experiences provides awareness of the needed services and resources that help social workers maintain effectiveness in their home and work life. This phenomenological study explored the lived experiences of social workers who have children with special needs. Bronfenbrenner's ecological theory guided this study. Criterion and snowball sampling were used to recruit 8 participants. Data were gathered through 3 in-depth semistructured interviews. Moustakas phenomenology method was used to …
Impact Of English Language Teachers' Technology-Based Pedagogical Choices On Japanese University Students, Robert John Mcclung
Impact Of English Language Teachers' Technology-Based Pedagogical Choices On Japanese University Students, Robert John Mcclung
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Recent literature suggests that communicative language tasks widely used by English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers to try and improve Japanese students’ learning have had little effect on improving their language ability and their intrinsic motivation to improve. Consequently, a number of teachers are now using interactive technology in the classroom although it has not been systematically implemented or widely studied. Understanding the approaches of successful EFL teachers—specifically, how teachers using an andragogic approach through experiential learning might affect student engagement—was the purpose of this qualitative study. The conceptual framework focused on student-centered learning and included Knowles’s theory of …

Addressing Bullying Behavior In Pediatric Patients Using A Clinical Practice Guideline, Barnitta Latricia Moses
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Childhood bullying can lead to adverse physical and mental health outcomes for both the victim and the bully. Risk factors for bullying can be related to gender, race, sexual preference, and having any type of disability. A pediatric primary care clinic in a large, metropolitan area, the focus for this project, did not have an evidenced-based clinical practice guideline (CPG) for providers to facilitate the management of children who presented with reported bullying. The project, guided by the Tanner's integrated model of clinical judgement, addressed the question whether a CPG would facilitate the early recognition and treatment of bullying in …

Parenting Styles And Children's Usage Of The Internet In The Digital Age, Micere Sidi Oden
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Research is limited on the differences between mothers and fathers on traditional and Internet parenting styles, particularly fathers' Internet parenting styles. Baumrind's parenting styles typology guided this quantitative, cross-sectional assessment of mothers and fathers of children age 6-13 years old on 4 dimensions of the Parenting Style Scale; 6 subscales of the Internet Parenting Style Instrument, hours a child spent on the Internet for school versus entertainment, and several key demographics to examine canonical correlation dimensions relating traditional and Internet parenting styles and to examine differences in styles between mothers and fathers. A convenience sample (N =129) was collected from …
The Impact Of Felony Criminal History On The Perceptions Of Hiring Managers, Larrica Mosley
The Impact Of Felony Criminal History On The Perceptions Of Hiring Managers, Larrica Mosley
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Individuals with a criminal background face several barriers to securing employment, one of which is the reluctance of hiring managers to extend employment offers to them. African American ex-offenders are disproportionately affected by these barriers. The purpose of this study was to examine the attitudes of hiring managers in a metropolitan area in the Southern United States and to identify the factors that influence the hiring decisions of ex-offenders. A descriptive study design was used to explore whether type of criminal offense, length of crime, or race of offender affect a hiring manager's decision to hire an ex-felon. The disparate …

Business Sustainability Strategies Of Small Technology Companies, Eric Smith
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Each year, almost 12% of small technology companies fail to survive, and the risks associated with high-tech startups are high for business failure due to the introduction of new technology, similar competitor technology, and the short product life cycle of new products. The purpose of this multiple case study was to explore the business sustainability strategies that some owners of small technology companies used to remain in operation for longer than 5 years. The population for the study was the owners of 5 small technology companies located in the southeast region of the United States. The general systems theory was …
Using The Identity Capital Model To Understand Master's Counseling Students' Program Retention, Tammison Rene Smith
Using The Identity Capital Model To Understand Master's Counseling Students' Program Retention, Tammison Rene Smith
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Master's education is a quickly growing area of higher education that provides students higher lifetime earnings and lower levels of unemployment. Despite the benefits, the little research conducted over the past 20 years, using institutional, programmatic, and sociological student factors (e.g., age, race, and financial status) has had minimal success creating a universal model to understand what promotes the retention and graduation of master's students. Ct's identity capital model (ICM) holds that interactions of both sociological and agentic capital aid in the development of an individual's identity. While cultural capital is essential for building the foundation of identity, it is …

Drugs, Alcohol, And The Community College Student-Athlete: A Narrative Study, Kevin A. Berg
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Research shows that student-athletes, whether at the high school or collegiate ranks, experience higher rates of alcohol consumption than their non-athlete student counterparts. However, one population that has not been studied is the community college student-athlete. Traditional community college students have different risk categories and needs than traditional 4-year university students. In this study, community college student-athletes provided their views and perceptions on drugs and alcohol. To obtain data, a qualitative narrative analysis was completed by interviewing 13 community college student-athletes to identify their views and opinions on drugs and alcohol. Once the interviews were completed, transcription and coding were …

How Elementary Teachers Determine Meaningful Homework Assignments, Whitney Rae Bennett-Perro
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
A self-study at a local elementary school revealed that homework assignments appeared to be at lower levels of Bloom’s taxonomy, and students were inadequately prepared for summative assessments that required the application and critical thinking levels of Bloom’s taxonomy. Formative assessment data, ideally, drives teachers’ instructional decisions in the classroom. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to better understand the formative assessment processes that drive instructional decision making. The conceptual framework by Chappuis and influenced by Black and Wiliam includes the strategic process for successful formative assessment teaching and learning. The Effect Of Substance Abuse Rehabilitative Programming On Recidivism, Cindy Whitten
The Effect Of Substance Abuse Rehabilitative Programming On Recidivism, Cindy Whitten
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Drug addiction is a known cause of recidivism and contributes greatly to inmate populations in prisons in North America. Little, though, is understood at the program level whether substance abuse rehabilitative programs are statistically associated with reductions in recidivism. Using conceptualizations of both punctuated equilibrium and differential association as the foundation, the purpose of this quasi-experimental design was to determine if participation in one moderate intensity program oriented toward the treatment of substance abuse is associated with reductions in recidivism. Secondary data were acquired from department of justice databases to compare a sample of 100 offenders who completed the program …

Information Sources That Influence The Financial Literacy Of Puerto Rican College Students, Enid Alvarez
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Researchers agree that Puerto Ricans lack basic financial knowledge that would allow them to participate in the financial system actively. However, the literature did not provide any data about the knowledge transmission practices that Puerto Ricans use to gather and transmit financial knowledge. As a result, there was a limited understanding of the social learning processes used by Puerto Rican college students to make financial decisions. Using consumer socialization and family financial socialization models as the theoretical framework, the purpose of this quantitative, nonexperimental study was to identify the information sources that Puerto Ricans use to gather financial knowledge. A …

Millennial Business Owners' Strategies To Survive In Business, Andrietta Bryant-Minter
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Individuals in the millennial generation, born from 1980 to 1996, have many entrepreneurial opportunities; however, many people in the millennial generation lack the skills, motivation, and business strategies to survive in business. Because of the influx of competition, lack of experience, and lack of business-world strategies, entrepreneurs can miss opportunities and fail within the first few years of business operations. Grounded in the systems theory, the purpose of this multiple case study was to explore the strategies that business owners in the millennial generation used to survive in business longer than 6 years. Participants consisted of 5 business owners in …

Participants included 96 companies with listing on either National Association of Securities Dealers Automated Quotations, or the New York Stock Exchange, or both, with and without evidence of CSR and environmental disclosures. The multiple regression analysis significantly predicted higher net profit for …
Effect Of Health Information On Food Addiction Among Obese And Overweight Women, Kirsten Elyse Grant
Effect Of Health Information On Food Addiction Among Obese And Overweight Women, Kirsten Elyse Grant
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Research on obesity, weight loss, and food addiction (FA) suggested a strong relationship between use of food additives and the brain's addictive response to food. Previous researchers have examined (FA) and have identified certain food additives such as monosodium glutamate (MSG) and high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) as contributors to food addiction and overeating. Social cognitive theory (SCT) has also been effective in addressing addictive behaviors such as drug addiction, alcohol addiction, and smoking cessation (Bricker et al., 2010). However, researchers had not examined food addiction, social cognitive theory, and obesity in the same study. The purpose of this quantitative, …
The Impact Of Parental Support On The Health Behaviors Of Transgender Young Adults, Jill Hingston
The Impact Of Parental Support On The Health Behaviors Of Transgender Young Adults, Jill Hingston
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Paralleling recent increased public awareness of transgender issues, gender nonconforming youth are coming out at increasingly earlier ages. It is important to understand the impact that family acceptance or family rejection has on the health outcomes of transgender young people, who are at increased risk of discrimination, prejudice, harassment, victimization, violence, and possible mental health issues and who are understudied. This understanding can be framed within the minority stress model and Carl Rogers' theory of self, which provide insight into how minority groups experience negative reactions from both society and an internalized sense of congruence. The purpose of this descriptive, …
