Classifying Unsolved Murders As Serial Crimes, Rajub Bhowmik
Classifying Unsolved Murders As Serial Crimes, Rajub Bhowmik
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Serial murders have a destabilizing and traumatizing effect on society, making it beneficial for law enforcement to classify certain homicides as serial murders, which would help link cases together and solve all of them. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to examine which evaluative strategies homicide investigators use to classify unsolved homicides as the work of serial murderers or non-serial homicides. Semistructured interviews were conducted with a population of 10 police professionals. Data were analyzed using NVivo 12 software. Thirteen themes emerged: (a) similar and unusual modus operandi, (b) motive and relation, (c) time period, (d) physical evidences, …
Teacher Perceptions About Teaching Students With Executive Function Deficits, Susan Lynn Dunlap
Teacher Perceptions About Teaching Students With Executive Function Deficits, Susan Lynn Dunlap
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The problem that prompted this study was that kindergarten through 5th grade teachers were struggling to find appropriate interventions to support the rising number of students exhibiting executive function deficiencies (EFD). The purpose of this qualitative study was to investigate the experiences and perceptions of local elementary teachers about students with EFD, about instructional strategies used to help focus EFD students, and about teachers’ professional needs to work effectively with EFD students. Diamond’s core characteristics of EFD served as the conceptual framework guiding this study. The research questions focused on teachers’ experiences and perceptions of strategies used for students with …
Atheoretical Versus Theory-Based Approaches In Promoting Safer Adhd-Medication Prescribing For Adults, Kathleen A. Fairman
Atheoretical Versus Theory-Based Approaches In Promoting Safer Adhd-Medication Prescribing For Adults, Kathleen A. Fairman
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Gaps between treatment guidelines and medical decisions persist despite interventions with physicians, which are mostly atheoretical. The purpose of this retrospective cross-sectional study was to compare atheoretical and theory-based logistic regression models of a binary outcome: potentially unsafe prescribing of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) medications to adults. Social cognitive theory and self-determination theory provided the framework for the study. Predictors were framed as social cognitive theoretical constructs: knowledge (e.g., physician specialty) and environmental influence (e.g., interventions). Atheoretical hypotheses were based on legislation mandating meaningful use of electronic health records and computerized decision support (CDS). Theory-based hypotheses were derived from literature …
Aviation Maintenance Technician Decision-Making, Dominic Hemingway
Aviation Maintenance Technician Decision-Making, Dominic Hemingway

Strategies For Improving Remedial Mathematics Performance Among Community College Students, Lateria S. Joiner
Strategies For Improving Remedial Mathematics Performance Among Community College Students, Lateria S. Joiner
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Increasing numbers of underprepared students throughout the United States must enroll in college remedial math courses, which delays students’ graduation and increases withdrawal rates. Two-thirds of first-year college students at a rural community college in the southeastern United States were required to enroll in remedial mathematics. Only 65% completed the course. Guided by Bandura’s theory of self-efficacy, which maintains that belief in one’s ability improves success, the purpose of this qualitative study was to examine the perceptions of instructors, administrators, and students to explain the gap in performance in remedial mathematics and to use the results of this study to …

Microcystins And Liver Disease Mortality, Insights From An Ecological Study, Rajesh Tirpaul Melaram
Microcystins And Liver Disease Mortality, Insights From An Ecological Study, Rajesh Tirpaul Melaram
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Microcystins (MCs) are toxic secondary metabolites produced by freshwater cyanobacteria. Algal bloom subsidence can stimulate MC release, which can impair liver function if orally exposed to in large doses. The purpose of this retrospective, U.S. ecological study was to determine if MC exposure represented an environmental risk factor for liver disease mortality using a socioecological approach. A longitudinal ecological substudy investigated the association between average total MCs in Lake Washington and Lake Manatee and age-adjusted chronic liver disease (CLD)/cirrhosis death rates in Brevard County and Manatee County, Florida (FL). A prediction model of total MCs was deduced by quantifying levels …

Trends And Barriers Regarding Attrition Among Adult Learners At A Community College, Myrtle C. Brown
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The high attrition rates of adult learners at a 2-year, southeastern community college are a continuing concern among college administrators. These high rates have resulted in an increased number of nontraditional adult learners failing to persist and complete a program of study.
