Nursing is currently the largest job category in U.S. health care requiring proper recruitment and retention of nurses. As the current generation of nurses ages out of the workforce due to retirement, new nurses will need to cover the gaps in the workforce. The purpose of this quantitative correlational study was to examine the relationship between voluntary turnover, involuntary turnover, and career change among nurses who were born between 1980 and 1995 (Millennials) and those born between 1965 and 1979 (Generation X). The theoretical framework was Mannheim’s theory of generations. Secondary data were collected from exit interviews with 811 respondents …

Experiences With Addiction Transfer Among Weight Loss Surgery Recipients, Latoya Smalls
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Obesity remains a significant problem linked to psychological, behavioral, metabolic, and environmental factors. Some individuals who struggle with obesity turn to weight loss surgery. Studies exploring the long-term effects of weight loss surgery and its connection with transfer addiction have reached conflicting findings. This phenomenological study was conducted according to procedures developed by Husserl and Giorgi. Data were collected for this qualitative study through semistructured interviews with 10 bariatric weight loss surgery recipients. Data were analyzed using the five stages of Giorgi’s descriptive phenomenological method process of data analysis. Analysis of the data led to five themes and eight subthemes. …

The Efficacy Of Barcoded Medication Administration In The Emergency Department, Aleksandr Vasserman
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The practice problem addressed in this Doctor of Nursing Practice project was safe medication administration in the emergency department (ED). Paper-based delivery of medication administration is prone to errors and multiple points of failure affecting patients’ safety. The gap in nursing practice was the lack of analysis regarding the efficacy of the barcoded medication administration (BCMA) process in the ED. The practice-focused question for this project addressed whether the implementation of BCMA in the ED effectively reduced medication administration errors as compared to the previously used paper-based, non-BCMA process. The aim of this doctoral project was to review the efficacy …

Kindergarten Teachers' Perspectives On School Readiness In Children Who Attended Military Installation Childcare Centers, Juliana Wilson
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Limited literature exists on the effectiveness of prekindergarten programs located on military installations in the United States. The children who attend these programs may not receive school readiness preparation equivalent to that received by their peers who attend community-based prekindergarten programs, which follow different guidelines. The purpose of this study was to gain insight into the kindergarten readiness of children who attended preschool on military installations as described by teachers in community-based kindergarten classrooms. Pianta's work on school readiness formed the conceptual framework of this basic qualitative study. The research question addressed how kindergarten teachers describe school readiness in children …

Sociodemographic Factors As Predictors Of Low Influenza Vaccination In Chicago, Illinois, Ingrid L. Jeske
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Outbursts of seasonal influenza contribute to morbidity and mortality in the United States. Influenza is a contagious disease caused by influenza viruses. The main subtypes of the influenza virus are Type A and Type B. Influenza vaccines are among the most effective methods in preventing the spread of the influenza virus because they offer the best immune defense. However, health care providers face significant challenges due to low patient compliance with current vaccine recommendations and misinformation. Scholars have yet to expand and further explore the reasons for the gap in influenza vaccination between White individuals and minorities, such as the …

Predictors Of Homelessness Among Female Veterans And Civilians, Victoria Caridad Justiniano Quinones
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Homelessness among female veterans is a problem that is likely to increase as growing numbers of women in the U.S. military reestablish themselves into their communities as veterans. There has been increasing concern about the greater risk for homelessness found among female veterans when compared to their nonveteran counterparts, so further investigation of homeless incidence by gender is also warranted. This quantitative, exploratory study was grounded in the social ecological theory, the Balshem and colleagues conceptual model of risk factors for veteran homelessness, and the Susser, Moore, and Link conceptual model which investigated causal pathways that are possible risk factors …

Sexual abuse and victimization can have long-term negative ramifications on victims, their families, and the community. Juveniles account for a notable portion of persons who engage in sexual offending behaviors; therefore, knowing more about the pathway that leads to juvenile sexual offending is beneficial in preventing sexual abuse and promoting community safety. Social cognitive theory was applied to the pathway of juvenile sexual offending behaviors to develop insight into how this behavior may be learned and to inform the selection of variables for this research. The key research question explored how traits of family dysfunction moderated the relationship between childhood …

Measuring Advance Directive Knowledge Gives Rise To Primary Care Nurses' Education Training, Arnell Corethia Kithcart
Measuring Advance Directive Knowledge Gives Rise To Primary Care Nurses' Education Training, Arnell Corethia Kithcart
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractPatients have the right to self-determine how and in what manner they desire to make end-of-life decisions. The use of advance directives (AD) is the focus of the Patient Self Determination Act (PSDA). The PSDA permits the use of legal documents to outline the patient’s end-of-life decision when they can no longer communicate to the medical community. Because individuals with chronic diseases are living longer the medical community must stay abreast on current laws and protocols to provide the care needed and address patient’s wishes for end-of-life needs. Nurses would be ideal to provide education on AD to patients upon …
Technological Employees’ Experiences Of Psychological Contract Breach: A Phenomenological Study, Dr. Uganda Knapps, Ph.D.
Technological Employees’ Experiences Of Psychological Contract Breach: A Phenomenological Study, Dr. Uganda Knapps, Ph.D.
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The aim of this study was to understand the importance of employee relations, ethics, and values; how psychological contracts form through the lenses of ethics, values, organizational justice, and perceptions; and how a psychological contract breach (PCB) may occur in certain situations.
