A Qualitative Inquiry Into The Phenomenon Of Vicarious Resilience In Law Enforcement Officers, Janet M. Pair
A Qualitative Inquiry Into The Phenomenon Of Vicarious Resilience In Law Enforcement Officers, Janet M. Pair
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Law enforcement officers (LEOs) often bear witness to trauma in others, leaving them vulnerable to vicarious traumatization. Vicarious resilience can counterbalance the negative effects of trauma work and help individuals avoid vicarious traumatization. This study investigated the phenomenon of vicarious resilience in 10 LEOs. The research questions focused on how the LEOs experienced witnessing victims demonstrate resilience during adversity and how they themselves were impacted by that experience. A phenomenological methodology and semi-structured interviews were used to explore the participants' experiences. Constructivist self-development theory and vicarious resilience were the conceptual frameworks used to explain how LEOs experience vicarious trauma and …
A Staff Education Project And Screening Tool To Identify Calciphylaxis, Janice Pennington
A Staff Education Project And Screening Tool To Identify Calciphylaxis, Janice Pennington
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Calciphylaxis is a deadly disease seen primarily in patients with end stage renal disease. Literature indicated that improved patient outcomes are seen with routine screenings. Many dialysis providers lack fundamental knowledge that would enable early identification of calciphylaxis in patients with renal disease. The purpose of this project was to design a screening instrument and develop a staff education program that would transform calciphylaxis management by promoting early identification and treatment of the disease. Knowles's theory of andragogy was used as the theoretic framework for the project. Dialysis center staff (n = 26) participated in the education. The number of …

Profitability Strategies For Small And Medium Entrepreneurs In Michigan, Dritan Pepaj
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Small businesses create 50% of all jobs in the United States, but at least 50% of all newly founded small businesses have failed since 2006, and only 1/3 have survived beyond 10 years. Small businesses have a high chance of failure in the first 5 years due to a lack of sustainable strategies. The purpose of this multiple case study was to explore the strategies small business owners need to sustain their business beyond 5 years in a purposefully chosen county in Michigan. A conceptual framework was constructed based on the stakeholder theory and its derived theories to provide a …
Perspectives Of Racism Among Offenders Post Incarceration, Anna Phillips
Perspectives Of Racism Among Offenders Post Incarceration, Anna Phillips
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Racial segregation in California prisons is a primary means of maintaining control and safety for inmates and correctional staff, yet little is understood about how racial segregation in prison impacts reentry of offenders into the community. The research question examined in this study focused on how living in the racial segregation of a California State prison, for 2 years or more might influence African-American, White, and Latino men's ability to interact with other races in a culturally diverse community upon release. Using Donald Clemmer's theory of prisonization as the foundation, the purpose of this phenomenological study was to understand the …

The Sexual Identity Development Of Gay Men In China, Stephen Pijanowski
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Limited research describes the impact of ethnic groups and mores, especially those of Asian ethnicities, on the development of a global queering theory of sexual-identity development. The purpose of this grounded-theory study was to investigate the sexual-identity development of homosexuals in a non-Western collectivist culture and the extent of influence Western gay expatriates have on Chinese gay males' sexual-identity development. Five identity-development models served as the theoretical foundations of this study: Cass, Troiden, McCarn and Fassinger, D'Augelli, Gock, and the conceptual theory of global queering. NVivo aided in data organization, while coding and analysis were applied to the data. Individual, …
The Hostage/Crisis Negotiation Team Member's Perception Of The Mental Health Professional, Timothy Quigley
The Hostage/Crisis Negotiation Team Member's Perception Of The Mental Health Professional, Timothy Quigley
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Hostage/crisis negotiation has been described as a complex verbal dance between the negotiator and the subject. While one of law enforcement's most effective tools and most significant developments in law enforcement and police psychology over the past several decades, the acceptance of mental health professionals (MHP) on a hostage/crisis negotiation team is ambiguous. This study examined how mental health professionals working with hostage/crisis negotiation teams are perceived, if there is positive small group socialization within teams, whether the outcome of incidents is affected by designation of the MHP as a team member versus a consultant, and whether prior law enforcement …
Family Reunification Among Women In Recovery From Substance Abuse And Complex Trauma, Cesha Tiffany Reese
Family Reunification Among Women In Recovery From Substance Abuse And Complex Trauma, Cesha Tiffany Reese
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
For women in recovery from complex trauma and substance abuse, the lack of posttreatment family reunification services such as family engagement, service delivery, and aftercare planning increase the likelihood of parental relapse and children reentering foster care. A primary caregiver's continued relapse can lead to longer out of home placement for minor children and a loss of parental rights, with a negative impact on both children and parents. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to examine the lived experiences of women in recovery, their sobriety practices, and how they reunified their families. The theoretical framework was Herman's trauma …

Effectiveness Of Continuous Subcutaneous Insulin Infusion Therapy Education In A Clinic Setting, Kimberly Rizzo
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Diabetes affects an estimated 29.1 million Americans, with approximately another 1/3 of Americans not yet diagnosed. Complications associated with diabetes include heart disease, stroke, hypertension, blindness, kidney disease, neuropathy and death. All of these complications can be prevented with optimal control of blood glucose levels. Advances in technology provide people living with diabetes (PLWD) a multitude of treatment options such as continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion (CSII) therapy. Unfortunately, sustained improvement in glycated hemoglobin A1c (HgA1c) is not always achieved even with this advanced therapy. The purpose of this doctoral project was to educate nurses on CSII therapy and promote improved …
