Physical Activity And Veteran Status In Obesity And Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, Erin Mcguire Kren

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

There are few data available regarding the relationship between physical activity and veteran status in those with combined chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and obesity. COPD is a common illness and a leading cause of death in the United States. Veterans represent a distinct subpopulation in the United States and are more likely to have COPD, which is a disease with a high rate of comorbidities such as obesity. Physical activity can improve outcomes for those with COPD and obesity. However, recommendations for physical activity for those with COPD and obesity are vague. This study, based on the self-determination theory, …

An Ethnography Of African American Parents' Perceptions About Exiting The Child Welfare System, Clevester Moten

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Families of color in the State of Michigan, as in many other states, have been overrepresented in the child welfare system, particularly in the foster care system. The Child and Family Services and Improvement Act of 2006 (P.L. 109-288) was intended, in part, to provide community-based interventions that could rectify the inequality some African American families experienced during their journey through the U.S. child welfare system. Guided by Bronfenbrenner's human ecology theory and Shaw and McKay's social disorganization theory, the purpose of this qualitative study was to examine the experiences and perceptions of African American parents and families about the …

In 2009, the U.S. government allocated $27 billion to health care agencies for electronic health records (EHRs) implementation. The increased use of EHR systems is expected to drive down health care costs and increase profits. To meet this anticipated return on investment (ROI), hospital managers need to be able to successfully design, deploy, and manage EHR systems. The purpose of this single case study was to explore organizational management strategies that hospital managers can use to ensure their investments in EHRs meet targeted ROIs and work efficiency goals. The conceptual framework for this study was based on the technology acceptance …

Relationships Between Job Satisfaction, Organizational Commitment, And Teacher Engagement, Chakita Jackson Jan 2018

Relationships Between Job Satisfaction, Organizational Commitment, And Teacher Engagement, Chakita Jackson

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Educational researchers contend that high-quality, sustaining teachers are critical to student success. However, few policymakers agree on the best way to improve teacher quality. Researchers outside of education found associations between employee engagement and job performance, which suggests that improving teacher work engagement may potentially improve teacher productivity. Engagement theories framed this correlational study; Kahn's engagement theory, Spector's job satisfaction theory and Meyer and Allen's organizational commitment theory. These theories contributed to examining relationships between job satisfaction, organizational commitment, and teacher work engagement. Additionally, this study further examined how these relationships mediated teacher demographics ( gender, age, educational level, and …

Workplace Violence Among Nurses And Nursing Assistants In Texas, Tamala Norris Jan 2018

Workplace Violence Among Nurses And Nursing Assistants In Texas, Tamala Norris

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Workplace violence (WPV) is ranked as one of the leading causes of occupational injury in the United States and is common in health settings. Nurses have the highest rate of violent victimization reported in the U.S., thus presenting a significant issue for healthcare leaders. Various researchers focus on prevalence rates of WPV among nurses discussing types of violence, location, and the setting where the WPV occurred. Less information exists regarding time taken off work and factors associated with WPV among nurses versus nursing assistants (NAs). This information is important due to the impact on safe work environments for nursing employees. …

Time Banks As Aging-In-Place Initiatives, Calli Sajnani Jan 2018

Time Banks As Aging-In-Place Initiatives, Calli Sajnani

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

There has been growing concern over how state and federal governments can support the increasing population of aging Americans and their need for long-term care. Current insurance funding models cover acute hospitalization and skilled care only, leaving unskilled care needs and homemaker services at the full expense of those in need. Time banking allows individuals to exchange or barter time for goods or services without monetary payment. There is insufficient evidence to determine if members believe time banks to be a viable alternative to support aging-in-place care needs. This phenomenological study explored time banking as a potential vehicle for nonskilled …

Evidence-Based Practice Guideline For Peripheral Artery Disease, Jenny Ann Salve Managbanag Jan 2018

Evidence-Based Practice Guideline For Peripheral Artery Disease, Jenny Ann Salve Managbanag

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The absence of a practice guideline for peripheral artery disease (PAD) in the cardiology department creates differing practice preferences among providers, leading to deviations in practice among staff. Variations in practice can affect the quality of care that is provided to patients. This project was guided by research statements indicating that there was a difference in the screening approach for PAD among health practitioners at preimplementation and postimplementation and that an 85% compliance with the guideline would signify consistency in the provision of care. Rogers' theory of diffusion of innovations was used to facilitate the adoption of the guideline. This …

In Ontario, Canada, practical nurses (PN) are educated through a 2-year diploma program. A review of PN program curricula in Ontario suggested that emotional intelligence (EI) and the core concept of emotional self-management are not specified in curriculum outcomes or courses. The study explored PN students' lived experiences with emotional self-management in the clinical settings where they are exposed to stress related situations using van Manen's orientation to hermeneutic phenomenology. The original four-branch ability model of EI by Mayer and Salovey was used as the theoretical framework to guide the explorative and interpretative processes of the study. Face-to-face interviews were …

Dissertation: Sociodemographics And Pancreatic Cancer Survival Rate, Sylvester Lewis Jan 2018

Dissertation: Sociodemographics And Pancreatic Cancer Survival Rate, Sylvester Lewis

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Pancreatic carcinoma or pancreatic cancer (PaCa) is an insidious disease with a prognosis of 6- to 12-month survival time for a late stage diagnosis. This problem has become crucial given that no study to date had been able to establish a definitive association between independent factors (other than a few diseases) and the survival rate of pancreatic cancer. The purpose of this quantitative, cross-sectional study was to determine whether an association exists between the independent, sociodemographic variables (marital status, age, education, income, and employment) and the outcome variable of survival rate. The social cognitive theory was the framework that provided …
