Palliative Care Integration In The Intensive Care Unit, Jennifer Goldsborough

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Palliative health care is offered to any patient experiencing a life limiting or life changing illness. The palliative approach includes goals of care, expert symptom management, and advance care planning in order to reduce patient suffering. Complex care can be provided by palliative care specialists while primary palliative care can be given by educated staff nurses. However, according to the literature, intensive care unit (ICU) nurses have demonstrated a lack of knowledge in the provision of primary care as well as experiencing moral distress from that lack of knowledge. In this doctor of nursing practice staff education project, the problem …

Factors Predicting Academic Achievement Among Hispanic Community College Students, Lisa Marcelino

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Hispanic college students are more at risk of poor academic performance and dropping out than any other racial group. The Hispanic college population continues to grow, yet rates of retention and achievement for this group continue to decline. Previous research on Hispanic college students has examined factors that contribute to underachievement and declining graduation rates, but they are limited to students attending 4-year institutions. This study examined if grade point averages (GPAs) were affected by levels of self-efficacy, resiliency, and sensation seeking. Bandura's self-efficacy and social cognitive theories along with Zuckerman and Kuhlman's theory of sensation-seeking were the theoretical frameworks …

Cost-Effectiveness Analysis Of Preimplantation Genetic Screening, William Andrew Moye Jan 2018

Cost-Effectiveness Analysis Of Preimplantation Genetic Screening, William Andrew Moye

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

In vitro fertilization (IVF) is used to help infertile couples achieve a live birth. Clinical studies have suggested that multiple, consecutive cycles of IVF can increase live birth rate significantly. Others have documented improved live birth rates from the use of new laboratory techniques for preimplantation genetic screening (PGS). This genetic screening technique seeks to determine the ploidy of the embryo prior to implantation into the woman. To date, no study has examined the cost-effectiveness of using IVF in conjunction with PGS compared to that of IVF alone for 3 consecutive cycles in achieving a live birth. This study compared …

Program To Prevent Subsequent Fragility Fractures, Kathleen Jean Forti-Gallant

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

One out of 2 women and 1 out of 5 men over age 50 will sustain a fragility fracture (FF) in their lifetime. The risk of a 2nd FF increases dramatically after the 1st fracture and can lead to pain, disability, and mortality. Despite the evidence that secondary prevention programs are effective, the local facility did not have a formal mechanism to address this need. The purpose of this project was to design a program for secondary prevention of FFs and to address the need for a program for secondary FF prevention that was sustainable locally. The program was designed …

Colorectal Cancer Awareness And Screening Guideline For African American Populations, Keyna Omenukor

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Colorectal cancer is the 3rd leading cause of cancer-related deaths. Early screening

provides the best prospects for preventing the morbidity and mortality associated with the

disease. Nurses have the duty to promote health and prevent diseases. However, low rates

of colorectal cancer screening continue to be reported, especially among African

Americans who continue to suffer disproportionately from the disease. There is a need for

a culturally-sensitive clinical practice guideline that nurses can use to educate patients

appropriately on colorectal cancer. The practice focused question for this project was

designed to explore whether a culturally-sensitive clinical practice guideline to increase

colorectal …

Neighborhood-Level Predictors And Obesity Among African-American Children, Uche Onyeka

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The steady raise in childhood obesity is a major public health problem nationally and globally. Childhood obesity is primarily caused by an imbalance between caloric intake and caloric expenditure. The increase in childhood obesity rates over the past 3 decades suggested involvement of environmental and behavioral factors in the obesity epidemic. While childhood obesity is considered a public health crisis in the United States, only limited research is available about the potential impact of neighborhood-level factors such as access to healthy food, neighborhood safety, and risk-free outdoor playgrounds. The purpose of this study was to examine if any relationships existed …

Relationships Among Vitamin D Deficiency, Metabolic Syndrome, Smoking Behavior, And Physical Activity, Ethan Pham

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Aging increases the risk of both vitamin D deficiency and metabolic syndrome. Vitamin D deficiency and metabolic syndrome may be related, although there are mixed findings. Furthermore, literature suggests other factors such as physical fitness activity and smoking behavior are associated with Vitamin D deficiency and the development of metabolic syndrome. A number of studies have documented associations between Vitamin D levels and physical fitness activities, while other studies found correlations between Vitamin D levels, metabolic syndrome, and smoking behavior. However, no previous study has examined the links between physical fitness activity, smoking behavior, Vitamin D levels, and the risks …

Lyme disease is the most prevalent arthropod-borne (tick) disease in North America. The disease is more prevalent in some Eastern and Central states than in Western states. The general problem is that, in southern California especially in Los Angeles County, both patients and practitioners fail to recognize the disease, resulting in misdiagnosis and delayed treatment. Consequently, the patient may develop the long-term, chronic Lyme disease (CLD). The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore the impact of CLD on the health-promoting behaviors of ethnically diverse young adults from similar educational and socioeconomic backgrounds based on their lived experiences. The …

Implementing A Smoking Cessation Educational Module For Clinical Staff Members Who Care For Mentally Ill Outpatients, Anthonia Okeani

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

In the United States, cigarette smoking is the main contributor to preventable death in all populations; and, among the mentally ill, the prevalence of smoking is a clinical practice concern. Nearly half of all smokers also have a diagnosis of mental illness compared with 23% of the general population. In an effort to reduce the problem of tobacco use within mentally ill populations, this project sought to create an educational module on smoking cessation for staff in a mental health clinic. The theory of planned behavior was used to guide the project that focused on implementation of a behavior change …

Hand Expression With Lactation Support: Effect On Self-Efficacy And Breastfeeding Duration, Florence Omekara

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Breastfeeding is the best infant feeding method, and breastmilk has many immunological and anti-inflammatory properties that protect babies against illnesses and diseases. It protects the health of the mother and saves society substantial economic costs, as demonstrated in many studies. Studies show that if 90% of U.S mothers breastfed for 6 months, up to $13 billion in healthcare costs could be saved. Despite the health and economic benefits of breastfeeding, most women stop breastfeeding before 6 months postpartum, which falls short of the recommendations of the World Health Organization, U.S. Surgeon General, and American Academy of Pediatrics. This study explored …
