These needs and perceptions were examined using a questionnaire survey distributed to a sampling of 20 physicians in Chad. The purpose of this qualitative study was to investigate the role of primary care providers in the integrated disease surveillance to identify factors that impact complete, quality, and timely reporting. The theoretical foundation of the study was the social cognitive theory of perceived self-efficacy that was developed by Bandura. There were 4 specific research questions investigated. A correlational research design was used to sample 115 stroke survivors from several Arkansas rehabilitation facilities who completed a pilot study, demographic form, QOL rating scale, and the Daily Living Self-Efficacy Scale (DLSES). Stepwise multiple regression analysis was applied to identify the independent …

The Lived Experiences Of Lesbian And Gay Clients Who Terminated Counseling Prematurely, Jaymie Vanmeter Jan 2019

The Lived Experiences Of Lesbian And Gay Clients Who Terminated Counseling Prematurely, Jaymie Vanmeter

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Due to a lack of understanding lesbian and gay lived experiences in counseling, the counseling field is also lacking understanding of the lesbian and gay experiences in counseling that lead to premature termination. Without the knowledge of personal understanding of these experiences, it is difficult to also understand how to retain lesbian and gay clients, provide appropriate counselor training, and even explore cultural humility. The term cultural humility represents the implicit and explicit impact that culture has on the counselor and challenges assumptions made by the practitioner as well as assumptions about client culture (Fisher-Borne et al., 2015). The experiences …

Language Immersion Teachers' Perspectives Of Foreign Language Learning For Students With Disabilities, Chunling Zhang Jan 2019

Language Immersion Teachers' Perspectives Of Foreign Language Learning For Students With Disabilities, Chunling Zhang

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Foreign language learning for students with disabilities can be different from that of their nondisabled peers because of their special needs. Understanding the perspectives of language immersion teachers regarding their challenges and the support needed while working with students with disabilities in language immersion programs is important because such programs are growing rapidly nationwide. In addition, there is little research on the perspectives of these teachers in elementary school settings. The purpose of this qualitative study was to develop a deeper understanding of foreign language learning needs of students with disabilities from language immersion teachers' perspectives. Ajzen's theory of planned …

It is unknown if there is a relationship between in-utero methamphetamine exposure and the ability to build a healthy attachment to a caregiver. The purpose of this generic qualitative study was to improve understanding of the perceptions of caregivers about attachment efforts for foster children under the age of 3, who have had in-utero methamphetamine exposure. This study was guided by attachment theory. Purposeful sampling was used to select …

How Elementary Teachers Determine Meaningful Homework Assignments, Whitney Rae Bennett-Perro

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

A self-study at a local elementary school revealed that homework assignments appeared to be at lower levels of Bloom’s taxonomy, and students were inadequately prepared for summative assessments that required the application and critical thinking levels of Bloom’s taxonomy. Formative assessment data, ideally, drives teachers’ instructional decisions in the classroom. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to better understand the formative assessment processes that drive instructional decision making. The conceptual framework by Chappuis and influenced by Black and Wiliam includes the strategic process for successful formative assessment teaching and learning. At a time when the sport has been growing at the international level, the decline in the fortunes of the sport in Barbados had led to a climate of mistrust and blame …

An Ecological View Of Urban Kindergarten Reading Instructional Practices, Deborah Ann Clark Jan 2019

An Ecological View Of Urban Kindergarten Reading Instructional Practices, Deborah Ann Clark

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Kindergarten students who are identified as at risk in reading often enter school with deficiencies in early reading skills. Little research exists for this vulnerable population on reading instruction in large, urban, school systems. The purpose of this multiple case study, which was guided by Bronfenbrenner's ecological theory of human development, was to describe urban kindergarten teachers' beliefs about the environmental factors that contribute to students' at-risk reading status, instructional practices employed to remediate reading, and teacher reports about systems in place to support student reading development. The multiple case study design included (a) structured interviews, (b) observations of kindergarten …

The purpose of this basic qualitative study was to explore the perspectives of preschool teachers regarding their engagement with fathers of children in their classrooms. The conceptual framework was Epstein's 6 types of parental involvement. Three research questions, regarding teachers' perspectives of father engagement, teachers' reported efforts to increase the engagement of fathers, and the barriers teachers describe in increasing fathers' engagement, form the basis of this study. The Impact Of Parental Support On The Health Behaviors Of Transgender Young Adults, Jill Hingston Jan 2019

The Impact Of Parental Support On The Health Behaviors Of Transgender Young Adults, Jill Hingston

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Paralleling recent increased public awareness of transgender issues, gender nonconforming youth are coming out at increasingly earlier ages. It is important to understand the impact that family acceptance or family rejection has on the health outcomes of transgender young people, who are at increased risk of discrimination, prejudice, harassment, victimization, violence, and possible mental health issues and who are understudied. This understanding can be framed within the minority stress model and Carl Rogers' theory of self, which provide insight into how minority groups experience negative reactions from both society and an internalized sense of congruence. The purpose of this descriptive, …

The purpose of this project was to educate staff on MetS risk factors, signs, symptoms, and patient management with a goal to improve their knowledge of MetS. Lewin's change theory provided a conceptual framework for the project. The project question explored the development and evaluation of an educational module on …

Exploring Healthcare Transitions And Health Equity: An Integrative Review, Susan Ann Jordan Jan 2019

Exploring Healthcare Transitions And Health Equity: An Integrative Review, Susan Ann Jordan

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Compared to their typically developing peers, adolescents, and emerging adults with special healthcare needs (AEA-SHCN) disproportionately experience healthcare transition (HCT) disparities and poor access to adult care. Theoretical models that describe how access gaps develop and strategies to address unmet HCT needs are not well understood. While HCT researchers describe both system and patient healthcare barriers, a comprehensive approach that discovers how these factors interact and interfere remains misunderstood. An integrative review (IR) was conducted to understand the multiplicity of these factors. An intersectional theory (IT) provided further clarity on how key findings influence patient HCT experiences. Several themes were …

Predictive Relationship Between Socio-Demographics, Medication, And Treatment Completion Among Persons Experiencing Homelessness Treated For Tuberculosis, Sophia Ajoku

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Approximately 80% of people who contract tuberculosis (TB) in the United States are first infected with untreated latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI). LTBI is an ongoing public health concern in people who experience homelessness. Because of the transient nature of this population, it is often difficult for them to adhere to and complete treatment for LTBI. In this quantitative, correlational of a cross-sectional study, secondary data was from a public health clinic in southern U.S. The theoretical framework used for the study was the social ecological framework. Multiple logistic regression was used to determine if a statistically significant predictive relationship existed …
