Cancer Patients’ Spiritual Well-Being, Religious Coping, And Comfort In Communicating With Physicians, Cheryl Boettger
Cancer Patients’ Spiritual Well-Being, Religious Coping, And Comfort In Communicating With Physicians, Cheryl Boettger
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Terminal cancer patients with unmet spiritual needs are more likely to suffer from depression, anxiety, and an overall decrease in the quality of their physical, mental, and spiritual health. Even though the incidence of cancer continues to increase, with better treatment, patients are surviving longer. There is a known connection between spiritual, and physical well-being, but research has indicated that this connection is sometimes overlooked in certain populations. In this phenomenological qualitative study, the participants’ lived experiences communicating with their physician about spirituality while in treatment for cancer were examined. The biopsychosocial-spiritual model was used to explore the lived experiences …
Environmental Health Assessments For Foodborne Illness Outbreaks In The United States From 2017- 2019, Alyssa Shontel Woods
Environmental Health Assessments For Foodborne Illness Outbreaks In The United States From 2017- 2019, Alyssa Shontel Woods
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Individual cases of foodborne illness can lead to outbreaks that result in severe morbidity and fatality. As the United States’ food scene continues to evolve and diversify, there is a need to consider cultural variations and how they may affect food safety practices. This quantitative study, based on the National Environmental Assessment Reporting System (NEARS) data, grounded in the socio-ecological model, examined the prevalence and factors associated with salmonella outbreaks in ethnic versus non-ethnic food service establishments (FSEs) in the U.S. from 2017 to 2019. The research questions involved understanding the relationship between the primary language spoken, food safety training, …
Rehabilitation Counselor Interventions On Parental-Disability Acceptance, James Samuel Rothrock
Rehabilitation Counselor Interventions On Parental-Disability Acceptance, James Samuel Rothrock
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Rehabilitation counselors work with families to assist in transitioning adolescents with intellectual disabilities (ID) from school to adult services. Currently, there is no evidence base for rehabilitation counselors to conceptualize and promote disability acceptance in parents. The purpose of this research was to identify interventions used by rehabilitation counselors with parents at various levels of disability acceptance. The research questions focused on what experiences rehabilitation counselors have had coordinating services with parents of adolescents with ID experiencing various degrees of acceptance and how do they understand and intervene with parental acceptance? The theoretical foundations girding the formation and interpretation of …
Self-Esteem Among Adults With Adhd Symptoms, Dana Richelieu
Self-Esteem Among Adults With Adhd Symptoms, Dana Richelieu
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
This study assessed if attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) treatment, ADHD symptoms, social support, gender, coping, and educational attainment predicted self-esteem among adults. It differed from previous research on this topic because it included participants with ADHD symptoms compared to those with formal ADHD diagnoses. Grounded in Leary and Baumeister’s sociometer theory, the study involved using a nonexperimental correlational survey research design to assess this issue. A sample of 272 adult participants living in the United States were recruited. A multiple regression analysis revealed ADHD symptoms, social support, and coping were statistically significant predictors of self-esteem, while ADHD treatment, gender, …

Changes In Human Resources Function In Higher Education Institutions During A Pandemic, Naterena Anevia Parham-Cofield
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Pandemics have reshaped societies and paved ways for advances in sciences, political systems, technology, medicine, and the economy. However, researchers have not explored how human resources (HR) function changes due to a pandemic in higher education institutions (HEIs) and how managing it contributes to employee performance and employee well-being. The purpose of this qualitative descriptive multiple case study was to explore how HR function changed due to the COVID-19 pandemic in different types of HEIs and how managing it contributed to employee performance and employee well-being. The study was grounded in Kotter’s eight-step change management model. Data were collected through …
Parental Satisfaction With Provider Communication And Interventions For Their Autistic, David Escorcia
Parental Satisfaction With Provider Communication And Interventions For Their Autistic, David Escorcia
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a prevalent neurodevelopmental condition in childhood impacting children globally and involving entire families. It has far-reaching effects on the U.S. healthcare system, communities, and school systems. Recent reports from the CDC reveal that one in 44 children is diagnosed with ASD, emphasizing the need for professional interventions to support the development and well-being of autistic children. However, the existing literature is sparse when it comes to understanding how therapies provided by licensed practitioners are perceived as successful from the standpoint of parents. To address this gap, I undertook secondary data analysis of the National Survey …
Clinicians’ Experiences Of Using Schema-Focused Therapy In Black Americans With Panic Disorder, Martin E. Akanaefu
Clinicians’ Experiences Of Using Schema-Focused Therapy In Black Americans With Panic Disorder, Martin E. Akanaefu
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Black Americans have a history of racism, oppression, subjugation, and discrimination, which could increase the risk of developing panic disorder. Because panic disorder and other chronic psychological problems resist Beck’s short cognitive therapy and other interventions that overlook the roots of psychological problems, schema-focused therapy has been adopted more conveniently over the most recent years for their effective treatment. In this study, clinicians’ experiences of using schema-focused therapy with Black Americans with panic disorder was explored. The concept that grounded this study was the integrated schema-focused model, a convenient clinical model that integrates several models of schema therapy. Generic qualitative …
Understanding Adherence To Prescribed Medical Regimen To Treat Hypertension Among African American Males, Yolanda Lucian George
Understanding Adherence To Prescribed Medical Regimen To Treat Hypertension Among African American Males, Yolanda Lucian George
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Hypertension is referred to as the silent killer and has been for decades. African Americans have been affected disproportionately compared to Whites, leading to a significant medical and financial burden. The literature has demonstrated that even though African Americans have a similar or better awareness of hypertension, they are more likely to have poorer treatment outcomes and have their hypertension less controlled. In this study, the health belief model and the ecological social model were used as the guiding framework to understand this phenomenon. In this qualitative study, semistructured interviews were used to explore and understand the perception of adherence …
Nigerian Nurses' Perceptions Of Caring For Women With Female Genital Mutilation, Jane-Frances Echeozo
Nigerian Nurses' Perceptions Of Caring For Women With Female Genital Mutilation, Jane-Frances Echeozo
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
There are numerous health problems associated with female genital mutilation (FGM) practice. In Nigerian healthcare, professionals need to ensure culturally sensitive care for FGM cases. However, there was a literature gap involving culturally sensitive care for Nigerian women with FGM complications, evidenced by some northern Nigerian nurses who were not able to identify FGM categories or cultural given names associated with FGM types. Thus, this qualitative study involved ascertaining the worldview of Nigerian nurses and midwives in Owerri regarding providing culturally competent nursing care for FGM complications, guided by the process of cultural competence in the delivery of healthcare services …

Project Study Secondary Teachers’ Perspectives In Supporting English Language Learners, Yushica T. Walker
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The problem for this study was that an average of 60% of eighth-grade English Language Learners (ELL) in one Virginia county were not meeting reading proficiency based on Virginia Standards of Learning. A basic qualitative design was used to explore teachers' perspectives on their successes, challenges, and the resources they need to teach eighth-grade ELLs in reading. The resulting project was a three-day culturally responsive professional development training for English language (EL) teachers. Krashen's language acquisition theory was the conceptual framework used to explore teachers' perspectives on their successes, challenges, and the resources necessary to teach eighth-grade ELLs. Learning should …

School social workers play an instrumental role in providing school faculty members with skills and interventions to facilitate positive outcomes in both schools and the community at large. It is not known what role social workers play in the suspension and exclusion of Black male high school students. The research questions for this generic qualitative study explored the perspective of high school teachers and social workers from various South Mississippi counties perceptions of the roles social workers play in the implementation of positive behavior interventions and supports (PBIS) and social workers’ impact on the exclusion of Black male students from …
Association Between Medication Adherence And Asthma Among Latinos In The United States, Denisse Silva
Association Between Medication Adherence And Asthma Among Latinos In The United States, Denisse Silva
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Prior research has shown that Latinos in the United States face disproportionate challenges in managing their asthma symptoms. Therefore, this study aimed to identify factors that may influence medication adherence and asthma episodes among Latinos in the United States and was guided by Andersen’s health behavior theory. Data from 2020 Latinos who participated in the National Health Interview System in 2020 were analyzed. Findings indicated that nearly 23% of respondents reported an asthma episode. Approximately 25% of the sample reported an asthma episode during the last 12 months. A total of 43.6% of the sample reported not taking medication every …
Increasing Nurses’ Knowledge Regarding Beers Criteria And Polypharmacy In Elderly, Non-Institutionalized Patients, Florence Chinwe Ukenye
Increasing Nurses’ Knowledge Regarding Beers Criteria And Polypharmacy In Elderly, Non-Institutionalized Patients, Florence Chinwe Ukenye
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The elderly population, comprising individuals ages 65 years and above, accounts for 12% of the total population in the United States. Many elderly individuals residing in noninstitutionalized communities continue to experience the effects of polypharmacy despite efforts to employ evidence-based practices for medication reconciliation. Preventing polypharmacy among people ages 65 and older is crucial to avoid unintended drug abuse and subsequent adverse drug effects in this vulnerable patient group. One significant strategy to prevent drug-related problems and negative effects of medications is using the Beers criteria. The gap in practice in a post-acute care and rehabilitation facility addressed in this …
Self-Management Of Coronary Heart Disease Among Middle-Aged And Older Low-Income African Americans, Tina Alfred-Iyamu
Self-Management Of Coronary Heart Disease Among Middle-Aged And Older Low-Income African Americans, Tina Alfred-Iyamu
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Coronary heart disease (CHD) stands out as the predominant cardiovascular condition, exerting a significant toll on both mortality and morbidity. Notably, African Americans (AA) grapple with an alarmingly elevated incidence, prevalence, and mortality rate compared to other demographics within the United States. Extensive research underscores the potential for effective CHD management through self-management practices, though this is notably deficient. This qualitative, phenomenological study delves into the intricate lived experiences surrounding the self-management of CHD among low-income individuals in the middle-aged and older AA demographic. My theoretical framework was the Health Belief Model. Impressively, the study participants exhibited a profound understanding …
Strong Black Woman Schema And Its Impact Among Black Women, Charissa Simon
Strong Black Woman Schema And Its Impact Among Black Women, Charissa Simon
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
This qualitative phenomenological study explored the impact of the Strong Black Woman (SBW) schema on the mental health and help-seeking behaviors of Black/African American professional women, contributing novel insights to existing literature. Despite possessing access and financial means for mental health services, a strikingly low rate of Black/African American professional women seek such resources. The study was grounded in intersectionality theory and the self-silencing theory. Eleven Black/African American professional women participants volunteered. Thematic analysis illuminated common barriers including pride, distrust in the mental health system, a strong inclination towards self-reliance, feelings of being misunderstood, and a lack of emotional support. …

Investigating Effective Instructional Strategies To Increase Reading Comprehension Of Ells, Caroline Kosho
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
High school classroom teachers with English language learners (ELLs) assigned to their classrooms might not be using effective instructional strategies to increase reading comprehension scores of ELLs. The purpose of this basic qualitative study was to explore the use of strategies that high school classroom teachers use to teach cognitive academic language proficiency (CALP) to ELLs who have difficulty reading for understanding. The conceptual framework guiding this study was Cummin’s second language acquisition theory. The basic qualitative research design was guided by two research questions intended to determine the effectiveness of strategies used by the high school classroom teachers to …
Effects Of Inclusive Prekindergarten Programs On Developmental Skills Of Typically Developing Children, Danita Duhart
Effects Of Inclusive Prekindergarten Programs On Developmental Skills Of Typically Developing Children, Danita Duhart
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act of 2004 set forth guidelines for inclusionary practices to ensure that students with disabilities were educated with their nondisabled peers. In early childhood education, there was a paucity of information that addressed, in quantifiable terms, the effect of inclusion on the developmental skills of typically developing children. The purpose of this quantitative, quasi-experimental, nonequivalent study was to examine to what extent the prekindergarten program delivery setting, inclusion versus noninclusion, effects the developmental domains of typically developing children. The theoretical framework was based on Arnold Gesell’s maturational theory of development. The developmental domains for typically …
Evidence-Based Leadership Practices Of Reentry Program Leaders To Reduce Recidivism Among African American Women, Mabrey Raymond Duff
Evidence-Based Leadership Practices Of Reentry Program Leaders To Reduce Recidivism Among African American Women, Mabrey Raymond Duff
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The rate of recidivism among African American women is disproportionately higher than among European American or Latino women in a southeastern state. The problem identified was the high prevalence of recidivism among African American women despite undergoing reentry programs. The purpose of this basic qualitative study was to explore the practices of reentry program leaders in a southeastern state that reduce recidivism among formerly incarcerated African American women. Evidence-based leadership development provided a conceptual framework for assessing the results of practices in the reentry program. Current reentry program leaders in a southeastern state were asked to describe the leadership practices …
