This chapter will provide information on what Blockchain is and why it is used. It describes the basic concepts underlying Blockchain technology, such as distributed ledgers, consensus mechanisms, mining, smart contracts, P2P, and the classification of existing Blockchain systems. Next, it explores Blockchain applications in general, in businesses and society. Blockchain maybe used e.g., for fundraising, in education, and for provenance and authenticity registration. The purpose of this article is to analyze the difficulties associated with the lack of regulations in cryptocurrencies. Indeed, the absence of a uniform and international common regulation brings many legal conflicts. This lack of legal framework partly slows down the development of cryptocurrencies. Investors who wish to invest in this type of currency or asset are often discouraged due to the lack of legal framework.
