Very early in Mississippi's history, our leaders made a commitment to educating the state's young people by creating the University of Mississippi. The Legislature issued our charter in 1844, and we opened our doors to 80 students in 1848. Since then, we have provided exceptional educational opportunities. During our 158 years, we have also mirrored the circumstances and challenges our state has confronted.

Jim Ingram, a three-year linebacker for the Rebels and co-captain of the 1952 undefeated team, died early Friday in Tupelo. He graduated from Ole Miss in 1953 with a bachelor's degree in physical education. During his time at Ole Miss, he was also president of the student M-club.

The University of Mississippi hosts a dedication ceremony for its new civil rights monument at 2:30 p.m. Oct. 1 on the Oxford campus. The monument, located between the Lyceum and the John D. Williams Library, features a life-size statue of James Meredith, the first black student admitted to the university. It also includes a 17-foot-tall limestone portal, brick benches and historical markers.
