OXFORD, Miss. - More than 300 letters written by a University of Mississippi student who left the campus in 1861 to help the Confederate forces fight the Civil War are the basis of a recent book. Jennifer Ford, associate professor and director of archives and special collection in UM's J.D. Williams Library, was inspired to write "The Hour of Our Nation's Agony" (University of Tennessee Press, 2007) as she processed the letters, which were donated to the library in 2002.

OXFORD, Miss. - Students studying dietetics at the University of Mississippi got hands-on experience and influenced the lives of some high school students in late November thanks to a $7,500 grant from the Mississippi chapter of the March of Dimes. The "New Futures" program, administered at South Panola High School in Batesville, focused on educating students about the dangers of poor nutrition during pregnancy, the risk factors of premature labor and the importance of learning how to set goals to continue their education, said Teresa Carithers, chair of the Department of Family and Consumer Science and principal investigator for the …

OXFORD, Miss. - Donald Shores Vaughan, professor emeritus of political science at the University of Mississippi, died Thursday in Tucson, Ariz., at age 86. While activities for the students are planned for the entire day, the final hurling contest begins at 5 p.m. in the Ole Miss Indoor Practice Facility and is free and open to the public. OXFORD, Miss. - A University of Mississippi professor of English has published a novel on the life of the late Finnish poet and translator Pentti Saarikoski. Doug Robinson, a former resident of Jyvaskyla, Finland, recently revisited Finland for the Helsinki Book Fair to promote his novel, "Pentinpeijaiset" ("Saarikoski's Spirits"). The event included a panel discussion of the book attended by more than 300 people, including two of Saarikoski's former wives.
