A Multiple Input Multiple Output Framework For The Automatic Optical Fractionator-Based Cell Counting In Z-Stacks Using Deep Learning, Palak Dave
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Quantifying cells in a defined region of biological tissue is critical for many clinical and preclinical studies, especially in pathology, toxicology, cancer, and behavior. Unbiased stereology is the state-of-art method for quantification of the total number and other morphometric parameters of stained objects in a defined region of biological tissue. As part of a program to develop accurate, precise, and more efficient automatic approaches for quantifying morphometric changes in biological tissue, our group has shown that both deep learning-based and hand-crafted algorithms can estimate the total number of histologically stained cells at their maximal profile of focus in extended depth …
Modeling, Control, And Operation Of A Grid-Tied Solar Photovoltaic Inverter In Unbalanced Conditions, Abdulhakim Alsaif
Modeling, Control, And Operation Of A Grid-Tied Solar Photovoltaic Inverter In Unbalanced Conditions, Abdulhakim Alsaif
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
With the increasing penetration of inverter-based resources (IBRs) integrated into powersystem grids as well as in microgrids (MGs), operational challenges and stability issues have been identified by the industry. In the last few years, solar Photovoltaic (PV) farm plants were allowed to be disconnected (isolated from the grid) during abnormal operation conditions to not only avoid stability issues but also to protect any damage to the solar PV inverter from such overcurrent or overvoltage. Most solar PV inverters operate in a conventional grid-following (GFL) control, where unbalanced operation becomes a critical issue. This control scheme regulates only positive sequence currents. …
Bulk Glass As Compressive Reinforcement In Structural Elements, John Cotter
Bulk Glass As Compressive Reinforcement In Structural Elements, John Cotter
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
All composites are formulations of materials that allow for the improvement of material properties by compositing materials with differing properties. For example, straw, which has a low compression strength and stiffness but relatively high tensile stiffness, composites well with clay, which has a high compression stiffness and low tensile strength, to create a material that utilizes a clay base with straw to greatly improve the strength of clay. In general, the most economical composites are those that combine a low-cost binder, or matrix, with higher strength reinforcing materials.
Contrary to popular knowledge, bulk glass is an exceedingly strong material when …
Dynamic Study Of Inverter-Based Resources In Weak Grids, Zhengyu Wang
Dynamic Study Of Inverter-Based Resources In Weak Grids, Zhengyu Wang
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
As the main technology behind renewable energy resources, such as solar PV and wind turbines, inverter-based generation penetration is increasing aggressively. Besides the congestion concerns when interconnecting a large-scale inverter-based resource (IBR) into the power grid, stability issues are commonly existing. The stability events occur more frequently when the resources are in remote area because the transmission line is long and grid strength is weak. One of the most representative and widely observed phenomena of IBR instability is low-frequency oscillation. And this dissertation focuses on investigating the low-frequency oscillations of IBR in weak grids.
The main objectives of the investigation …
Quantifying A 21-Year Surface Water And Groundwater Interaction In A Ridge And Valley Lake Environment Using A Highly Constrained Modeling Approach, Richard T. Bowers Jr.
Quantifying A 21-Year Surface Water And Groundwater Interaction In A Ridge And Valley Lake Environment Using A Highly Constrained Modeling Approach, Richard T. Bowers Jr.
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Karst lakes are ubiquitous in ridge terrain settings in limestone aquifer coastal plain environments. In west-central Florida, these lakes are frequently connected to the Upper Floridan aquifer and have unique aquifer recharge characteristics. They have been selectively studied because they commonly have no or very limited surface water discharge and limited drainage areas, have appreciable surface water and groundwater interaction and leak to the deep aquifer. An innovative modeling approach was developed to collectively understand and more precisely quantify this vertical leakage, both from a lake-specific and regional water budget standpoint, for a 21-year study period (2000-2020). A unique, calibrated …
Stochastic Models For Resilience Assessment And Improvement, Weimar Ardila Rueda
Stochastic Models For Resilience Assessment And Improvement, Weimar Ardila Rueda
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Resilience refers to the ability of a system to absorb and mitigate the impact of potential disruptions and return to normal operational conditions. The above notion of resilience allows us to distinguish two stages in a system's post-disruption response, the absorptive dimension and the recovery dimension. The absorptive dimension is related to a system's robustness and capacity to mitigate initial loss posterior to a disruption. Meanwhile, the recovery dimension is the system's rapidity to return and reach an acceptable level of functionality after the disruption occurrence.
A social-physical (SP) system's post-disruption response is related to its resilience capacity so building …
Aldosterone Treatment Protects Connexin 30 And 43 Expression For Age-Related Hearing Loss, Jennifer A. Pineros Valencia
Aldosterone Treatment Protects Connexin 30 And 43 Expression For Age-Related Hearing Loss, Jennifer A. Pineros Valencia
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Age-related hearing loss (ARHL), also known as presbycusis, is the number one communication disorder affecting our aged population. Connexin proteins are essential for intercellular communication throughout the human body. Mutations in connexin genes have been linked to human syndromic and nonsyndromic deafness; thus, we hypothesize changes in connexin gene and protein expression with age may be involved in the development of ARHL. In our current study, connexin mRNA gene expression for CBA/CaJ mice at different age points were examined and correlations were analyzed between the changes in gene expression and functional hearing measures, such as ABRs and DPOAEs. Moreover, we …

Theoretical And Experimental Analyses Of Acoustofluidic Phenomena For Biosensing Applications, Pradipta Kr. Das
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Acoustofluidics is a well-proven tweezer serving various applications such as particle manipulation, cell trapping and separations, fluid mixing, and bio-sensing. In this thesis, we explored several aspects of acoustofluidics such as acoustic streaming, acoustothermal heating and acoustophoretic manipulations of micron sized objects, in the context of biosensing applications.
In Chapter 2, inner acoustic streaming for second-order fluids has been studied analytically by employing asymptotic expansions for thin Stokes layer and low acoustic Mach number. In addition, a multiple-time-scale approach has been adopted to separate the primary oscillatory flow and the steady acoustic streaming. The study considers two sample cases: (i) …

L-Ergothioneine Treatment In Old Cba/Caj Male Mice Slows The Progression Of Age-Related Hearing Loss, Mark A. Bauer
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The naturally occurring amino acid, L-Ergothioneine (EGT), has immense potential as a therapeutic, having shown promise in the treatment of other disease models, including neurological disorders. EGT is naturally uptaken into cells via its specific receptor, OCTN1, suggesting that it is highly conserved, to be utilized by cells as an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory, particularly under stressed conditions. In our current study, EGT was administered over a period of 6 months to 25-26 month old CBA/CaJ mice as a possible treatment for age-related hearing loss (ARHL), since presbycusis has been linked to higher levels of cochlear oxidative stress, apoptosis and chronic …

Corrosion Performance Of Carbon And Galvanized Steel In Calcium Silicate Cement, Maria Cardoso
Corrosion Performance Of Carbon And Galvanized Steel In Calcium Silicate Cement, Maria Cardoso
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The concrete manufacturing industry has faced challenges with reducing carbon dioxide emissions as it currently produces about 8% of the world’s anthropogenic carbon dioxide emissions. With global atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations being higher than ever, the solution is urgent. Due to this, a more sustainable type of concrete has been proposed.Calcium silicate cement (CSC) composed of essentially the same raw materials as ordinary portland cement (OPC) cures through the consumption of carbon dioxide rather than hydration like OPC. CSC is being explored as a potential alternative to OPC, however, there is little to no information on its corrosion related durability. …

Orthogonal Saw Biosensor Fem Simulation Based On St-Quartz With Crystalline Zno Guiding Layer, Saurabh Patwardhan
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Detection of trace amounts of biomarkers is a critical requirement in sensing the presence of conditions such as early-stage cancer. The ST cut of the Quartz crystal (ST-Quartz) supports two fundamental surface acoustic waves (SAWs) in mutually perpendicular, or orthogonal, directions: the Rayleigh wave and the shear-horizontal wave (RSAW and SH-SAW, respectively). The orthogonality enables the use of ST-Quartz in biofouling removal by the RSAW and mass sensing via the SH-SAW simultaneously. The purpose of this study is to find an ideal guiding layer and wavelength configuration that can enhance the sensing capability without sacrificing the biofouling removal ability for …

Interaction Of Sequentially Applied Interventions For Gait Symmetry, Adila Hoque
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
More than 50% of stroke survivors over 65 years of age experience long-term mobilityloss [50]. Hemiparesis is a form of disability that arises from this, causing paralysis on one side of the body. The long-term effects of hemiparesis include loss of locomotion, muscle spasticity, and excessive use of muscles on the non-paretic side. This leads to a gait pattern that is kinematically and kinetically asymmetric.
Several rehabilitation techniques currently exist that aim to minimize this asymmetric gait, including split-belt treadmill training, rhythmic cueing (auditory or tactile), adding mass to one foot. Each form of treatment comes with its unique strengths …

Development Of An Automated Platform For Sensing And Differentiating Vapor-Phase Btex Constituents, Jonathan Samuelson
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Light aromatic hydrocarbons are an inevitable byproduct of fossil fuel extraction, refinement, distribution, and use. The four lightest and most prevalent of these are benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene, which are known collectively as BTEX. In spite of their chemical similarity these species have markedly different effects on human health and substantially different concentrations are permitted by OSHA in workplaces and by the EPA in ambient air and groundwater. Real-time detection, identification, and quantification of these species is therefore of great importance wherever they see industrial use. This work represents the continuation and advancement of a line of research in which …

Task Progress Assessment And Monitoring Using Self-Supervised Learning, Sainath Reddy Bobbala
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Robotic manipulation for cooking requires a thorough understanding of the cooking environment. The robot must understand the cooking objects and their states at each intermediate level as the process continues. To understand these states, we need frame-level annotations. To overcome this frame-level dependency, we introduce a self-supervised learning method to obtain the frame-level state representation with ”temporal video alignment” and ”contrastive learning.”In this work, we use self-supervised learning to train a model using multiple videos of the same action being performed in various settings. This model can extract frame-level embedding space and align videos via simple distance-based matching. We show …

Generative Spatio-Temporal And Multimodal Analysis Of Neonatal Pain, Md Sirajus Salekin
Generative Spatio-Temporal And Multimodal Analysis Of Neonatal Pain, Md Sirajus Salekin
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Neonates can not express their pain like an adult person. Due to the lacking of proper muscle growth and inability to express non-verbally, it is difficult to understand their emotional status. In addition, if the neonates are under any treatment or left monitored after any major surgeries (post-operative), it is more difficult to understand their pain due to the side effect of medications and the caring system (i.e. intubated, masked face, covered body with blanket, etc.). In a clinical environment, usually, bedside nurses routinely observe the neonate and measure the pain status following any standard clinical pain scale. But current …
