Toward An Integrated Communication Theory For Celebrity Endorsement In Fund Raising, Tracie M. Domino
Toward An Integrated Communication Theory For Celebrity Endorsement In Fund Raising, Tracie M. Domino
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Throughout the history of the United States, Americans customarily have given away their money, as well as their time to serve the common good. Americans will give "to build something, to fight something, or to save something" (Fink, 1990, p. 136). They make gifts to causes, or the societal problems represented by organizational missions, that are important to them. Individuals give not only to advance a common good, but also to receive private goods, or benefits that are internal, intangible, and in some cases, tangible (Steinberg, 1989).
To create this feeling of reciprocity for prospective donors who have not actually …
A Mathematical Model For Colloidal Aggregation, Colleen S. O'Brien
A Mathematical Model For Colloidal Aggregation, Colleen S. O'Brien
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The characterization of fine particles is an area of immense significance to many industrial endeavors. It has been estimated that 70% of all industrial processes deal with fine particles at some point in the process. A natural phenomenon occurring in these processes is colloidal aggregation. This study examines aggregation in colloidal systems in order to characterize, examine, and control this occurrence in industrial processes. The study of particle aggregation has been broken into many different areas, such as collision mechanisms, interaction energy etc, but a complete model that integrates these different aspects has never been fully realized. A new model …
Patterns Of 4th Graders' Literacy Events In Web Page Development, Rewa Colette Williams
Patterns Of 4th Graders' Literacy Events In Web Page Development, Rewa Colette Williams
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This study describes in-class and home literacy events that occur when students work in groups to create web pages as evidence of learning the academic content that was presented within a fourth grade classroom. The constructivist approach to learning was the underpinning idea examined as well as its connection to technology and group work. Data were collected in a variety of ways to obtain a picture, as comprehensive as possible, of the oral, listening, viewing, and written on-task communication and interactions that occurred. As the in-class and home literacy events emerged, the competencies and strategies that students used while interacting …
Fpga-Based Implementation Of Concatenative Speech Synthesis Algorithm, Praveen Kumar Bamini
Fpga-Based Implementation Of Concatenative Speech Synthesis Algorithm, Praveen Kumar Bamini
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The main aim of a text-to-speech synthesis system is to convert ordinary text into an acoustic signal that is indistinguishable from human speech. This thesis presents an architecture to implement a concatenative speech synthesis algorithm targeted to FPGAs. Many current text-to-speech systems are based on the concatenation of acoustic units of recorded speech. Current concatenative speech synthesizers are capable of producing highly intelligible speech. However, the quality of speech often suffers from discontinuities between the acoustic units, due to contextual differences. This is the easiest method to produce synthetic speech. It concatenates prerecorded acoustic elements and forms a continuous speech …
Energy And Transient Power Minimization During Behavioral Synthesis, Saraju P. Mohanty
Energy And Transient Power Minimization During Behavioral Synthesis, Saraju P. Mohanty
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The proliferation of portable systems and mobile computing platforms has increased the need for the design of low power consuming integrated circuits. The increase in chip density and clock frequencies due to technology advances has made low power design a critical issue. Low power design is further driven by several other factors such as thermal considerations and environmental concerns. In low-power design for battery driven portable applications, the reduction of peak power, peak power differential, average power and energy are equally important. In this dissertation, we propose a framework for the reduction of these parameters through datapath scheduling at behavioral …
Vector Flow Model In Video Estimation And Effects Of Network Congestion In Low Bit-Rate Compression Standards, Balaji Ramadoss
Vector Flow Model In Video Estimation And Effects Of Network Congestion In Low Bit-Rate Compression Standards, Balaji Ramadoss
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The use of digitized information is rapidly gaining acceptance in bio-medical applications. Video compression plays an important role in the archiving and transmission of different digital diagnostic modalities. The present scheme of video compression for low bit-rate networks is not suitable for medical video sequences. The instability is the result of block artifacts resulting from the block based DCT coefficient quantization. The possibility of applying deformable motion estimation techniques to make the video compression standard (H.263) more adaptable for bio-medial applications was studied in detail. The study on the network characteristics and the behavior of various congestion control mechanisms was …
University Copyright Policies For Online Coures: An Evaluative Resource Tool For Unbundling Rights Of Use, Control, And Revenue, Tamara A. Patzer
University Copyright Policies For Online Coures: An Evaluative Resource Tool For Unbundling Rights Of Use, Control, And Revenue, Tamara A. Patzer
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Who cares about who owns online courses? Nobody, because that is not what the issue is really about. Ownership is an emotional issue, but controlling the rights of a copyrightable work is tangible and logical. The important question to answer is not who owns online courses, but who controls the rights of any copyrightable work. For universities and faculty members, getting over the emotional issues and down to the foundation of what is truly at stake is of major concern. While it is nearly impossible to create qualitative guidelines for copyright policies and/or contracts, it is eminently possible to examine …
Gender Differences In Alcohol Expectancies: Influence Of Context And Specificity Of Items, Andrea Hope Weinberger
Gender Differences In Alcohol Expectancies: Influence Of Context And Specificity Of Items, Andrea Hope Weinberger
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Studies of alcohol expectancies have been equivocal regarding the existence of gender differences. A review of past studies suggested variables that could be useful for future studies such as investigating context-specific expectancies. The current study was designed to investigate the influence of context and item content on gender differences in expectancies. Undergraduate students who reported going to bars once a month or more (N = 321) completed an expectancy measure either while imagining themselves in a bar situation (Context condition) or with no contextual instructions (No Context condition). The expectancy measure consisted of expectancies that were "general" (Social and Tension …

Diversity And Production Of Phytoplankton In The Offshore Mississippi River Plume And Coastal Environments, Boris Wawrik
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
River discharge leads to extensive phytoplankton blooms often observed in ocean color satellite images to extend far into the open ocean as high chlorophyll plumes. We investigated diversity, distribution and ecology of phytoplankton populations in the Mississippi River plume, both spatially and in the water column using molecular tools. A method was developed for the quantification of diatom/pelagophyte rbcL (large subunit of Ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate Carboxylase/Oxygenase) mRNA using quantitative PCR and applied to cultures and in the plume. The vertical structure of phytoplankton species in the Mississippi River plume was described by flow cytometry, pigments, rbcL mRNA and rbcL cDNA libraries. High …
Organizational Office Space In The Virtual Age: The Role Of Shared Space In Communication, Sheila Gobes-Ryan
Organizational Office Space In The Virtual Age: The Role Of Shared Space In Communication, Sheila Gobes-Ryan
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This thesis takes a phenomenological approach to the examination of the organizational need for shared office space. Questions are developed in a reflexive narrative that introduces challenges to the assumption that space is a given in organizations. The narrative also uses the process of questioning this basis assumption to develop a new understanding of the role of space in organizations in supporting the development of common language needed for the creation of organizational knowledge. Key ideas from systems theory, autopoiesis, organizational theory, semiotics, and psychology are utilized as resources developing the ideas.
Falun Gong In The United States: An Ethnographic Study, Noah Porter
Falun Gong In The United States: An Ethnographic Study, Noah Porter
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Falun Gong, also known as Falun Dafa, has been described in many ways. It has been called qigong, one of many schools of physical exercises that aim at improving health and developing "supernatural abilities". Scholars and mainstream media have referred it to as a "spiritual movement" or religion, although practitioners claim it is not a religion. It has been called a cult, in the pejorative sense rather than in a sociological context, by the Chinese government and by some Western critics. In the writings of Li Hongzhi, the founder of Falun Gong, it is referred to in different ways, …

Developing Organizational Development: Alienation And Organizing In The Age Of Information, Robert D. Kreisher
Developing Organizational Development: Alienation And Organizing In The Age Of Information, Robert D. Kreisher
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Modernism is characterized by alienation from one's self and the processes by which one's self gets constructed. Organizational development (OD) is an activity that attempts to address the experience of work and to transform the historical alienation.
OD practitioners are often optimistic that this transformation is possible and even is happening in the day-to-day work of OD. A group of critics, mostly academics, are skeptical about whether any real transformation is possible, arguing that OD practices are misguided extensions of modernism. In one thread of the OD literature, authors build an argument for the centrality of issues of identity in …

Delivering Continuing Education In Health Education Using Self-Directed Computermediated Instruction: Moving From Intention To Action, Jane Ellery
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Using advanced technologies can help increase the availability of educational offerings; however, the steps taken in this direction must be appropriate for the target population and the specific content taught. As such, understanding factors that lead to health educators' intentions and behavior related to computer-mediated instruction for continuing education is an important step in developing and marketing appropriate computer-mediated instruction programs (Hoffman & Novak, 1994). Using the theory of planned behavior (Ajzen, 1988) this study explored the relationships between health educators' perceived behavioral control, attitudes, and subjective norms related to computer-mediated continuing education programs and their intentions to use, and …

Bioterrorism Syndromic Surveillance: A Dual-Use Approach With Direct Application To The Detection Of Infectious Disease Outbreaks, Kristin Broome Uhde
Bioterrorism Syndromic Surveillance: A Dual-Use Approach With Direct Application To The Detection Of Infectious Disease Outbreaks, Kristin Broome Uhde
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The threat of bioterrorism forces the public health infrastructure to focus attention on overall issues related to challenges posed by emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases. There is a crucial need to strengthen existing surveillance systems and to validate real-time approaches to surveillance that can provide timely alerts of epidemics whether they occur naturally or through a bioterrorism attack. The purpose of this study is to implement and evaluate a bioterrorism syndromic surveillance system called BioDefend™, to determine if the system could detect a potential epidemic/bioterrorism attack within 24-36 hours, more rapidly than it would be identified by routine health surveillance. …
Flat Chests And Crossed Eyes: Scrutinizing Minor Bodily Stigmas Through The Lens Of Cosmetic Surgery, Joan Ann George
Flat Chests And Crossed Eyes: Scrutinizing Minor Bodily Stigmas Through The Lens Of Cosmetic Surgery, Joan Ann George
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
If cosmetic surgery has become the cultural lens through which Americans look at issues of beauty and ugliness (Haiken 1997), then minor bodily stigma is the personal lens through which we scrutinize our bodies and self-diagnose our own flaws in the first place (Ellis 1998). In this dissertation, I interrogated the stories of eight women who struggled with two specific minor bodily stigmas--strabismus (crossed eyes) and micromastia (small breasts). Cosmetic surgery presents a potential "cure" for both of these conditions, however, as some of my interviewees could testify, the results are unpredictable. While some women reported being grateful that they …

Construction Of Smoking-Relevant Risk Perceptions Among College Students: The Influence Of Need For Cognition And Message Content, Jennifer Elaine Irvin
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The primary purpose of this study was to examine the potential joint influence of need for cognition (NC), the dispositional preference for engaging in (or avoiding) effortful cognitive processing of information, and type of smoking risk message (i.e., factual and evaluative messages similar in message content and length) on the construction of smoking-relevant risk perceptions among college smokers. A secondary purpose was to examine potential mechanisms through which changes in risk perception might occur. 227 college smokers evaluated one of three pamphlets, (1) a factual (i.e., primarily fact-based) smoking risk pamphlet, (2) an evaluative (i.e., primarily emotion based) smoking risk …
The Forgotten History: The Deinstitutionalization Movement In The Mental Health Care System In The United States, Nana Tuntiya
The Forgotten History: The Deinstitutionalization Movement In The Mental Health Care System In The United States, Nana Tuntiya
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The development of ideas on deinstitutionalization of mental patients has a much longer history in the United States than is commonly acknowledged. Evidence of intense discussion on the rights of the mentally disturbed, curative as opposed to control measures in their treatment, and the drawbacks of congregating the afflicted in large institutions can be found as early as the middle of the 19th century. This discussion was provoked by dissemination of knowledge about the oldest community care program of all: the colony of mental patients in Gheel, Belgium. Based on document analysis of publications in the American Journal of Insanity …

An Indepth Analysis Of Face Recognition Algorithms Using Affine Approximations, Lakshmi Reguna
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In order to foster the maturity of face recognition analysis as a science, a well implemented baseline algorithm and good performance metrics are highly essential to benchmark progress. In the past, face recognition algorithms based on Principal Components Analysis(PCA) have often been used as a baseline algorithm. The objective of this thesis is to develop a strategy to estimate the best affine transformation, which when applied to the eigen space of the PCA face recognition algorithm can approximate the results of any given face recognition algorithm. The affine approximation strategy outputs an optimal affine transform that approximates the similarity matrix …
Failure Of The Russian Democratic Reforms: The Democratization Of The Big Bear, Nicolé M. Hicks
Failure Of The Russian Democratic Reforms: The Democratization Of The Big Bear, Nicolé M. Hicks
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Looking back at the past twelve years, many would say that it appears Russia has lost the battle for liberal democratic reform. Among Russia watchers, the following question has been circulated: "Who lost Russia?" This debate has polarized most scholars into one of two camps: those who feel the reforms failed (the critics) and those who feel the reforms were a success (the supporters).
This paper will explain why the Russian reforms failed. By filling in the holes left by current research, the author will demonstrate that the truth may lie somewhere in between the two opposing sides.

Hearing Evaluation In Infants: An Update For Pediatricians, Janet E. Sullivan
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This paper provides an overview of developmental timetables relevant to hearing and of current pediatric audiological techniques and practices. The first sections summarize structural and functional development of the auditory pathway and the development of primary auditory processing. These developmental sequences appear to follow similar paths in humans and animals. Speech and music perception involve more complex processing and are strongly influenced by experience. Hearing disorders affect the perception of complex sounds in a variety of ways, depending on the site(s) of lesions. Early onset hearing impairment, including conductive loss from chronic otitis media, can seriously impede language development.

A Qualitative Analysis Of Trust Issues In The Journalist/Government Communicator Relationship: An Exploratory Study, Davina Yetter Gould
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
At a glance, journalists and public relations practitioners appear to have a dysfunctional relationship, despite having many professional similarities. Both groups use comparable skill sets in their jobs, including writing, information gathering, and making decisions based on news values. Both groups often work with each other in their professional positions; journalists look to public relations practitioners for sources and news tips, while public relations practitioners look to journalists to help send organizational messages to publics.
To better understand the issues of trust in this unique working relationship, ten journalists and ten government public information officers from the Tampa Bay, Florida …
