Antimicrobial Activity Of Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles Compared To Silver Nanoparticles Administered Towards Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus Biofilms, Kevin Núño
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs), silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), and chitosan nanoparticles have strong antibacterial activity as a broad-spectrum antibiotic against multi-drug resistant (MDR) bacteria. MDR bacteria have a mechanism that increases antibiotic resistance through biofilm formations. MDR methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus BAA-1720 was chosen for an in vitro assessment to calculate the biofilm reduction rate and the median effective dose (ED50) by performing biofilm quantification. Dynamic light scattering was chosen to determine the physiochemical characteristics of ZnO NPs, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), and chitosan NPs. Transmission electron microscopy was conducted to verify each treatment’s physiochemical characteristics. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing of broad-spectrum and …
Teaching A Child To Tact Emotions And Evaluating In Situ Generalization, Kayla Crouch
Teaching A Child To Tact Emotions And Evaluating In Situ Generalization, Kayla Crouch
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Children with autism can be disadvantaged socially by their difficulty recognizing emotions in others. This purpose of this study was to teach a 6-year-old child with ASD and emotion recognition deficits how to recognize the emotions of others via photos of facial expressions. A multiple baseline across emotions design was used. Photos of a variety of people were used to promote generalization and prompting, positive reinforcement, and error-correction procedures were implemented. The study effectively taught the participant to identify emotions based on photos of faces. The study also evaluated if learning to tact emotions via photos would generalize to in …
Bayesian Network-Based Diagnostic Support Tool With Limited Point-Of-Care Ultrasound For Work-Related Elbow Injuries, Cristina Maria Franceschini Sánchez
Bayesian Network-Based Diagnostic Support Tool With Limited Point-Of-Care Ultrasound For Work-Related Elbow Injuries, Cristina Maria Franceschini Sánchez
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The upper extremity is commonly injured at the workplace, frequently involving the elbow. Currently, there are not many diagnostic support tools for elbow injuries. Developing a clinical decision support tool would allow for narrowing differential diagnoses and guide management steps in a timely and cost-effective manner. In a descriptive retrospective cohort study, 85 non-contrast elbow MRIs were obtained from a large Workers Compensation insurer database. MRIs were either (a) greater than 2 weeks after first clinic visit, or (b) more than 6 weeks after injury, but (c) not more than 3 months after injury. A Bayesian network-based diagnostic support tool …
An Exercise In Exceptions: Personhood, Divergency, And Ableism In The Star Trek Franchise, Jessica A. Blackman
An Exercise In Exceptions: Personhood, Divergency, And Ableism In The Star Trek Franchise, Jessica A. Blackman
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In 1987, more than two decades after Star Trek: The Original Series aired on television for the first time, the Enterprise returned to delight audiences with an all-new crew in Star Trek: The Next Generation. With the new generation came new issues and adventures for the crew and the audience to explore, and the popularity of the show lead to the production of three successful spin-offs. These four new shows in the Star Trek franchise dealt with more complex plots and commentaries than the original series before them; three characters in particular – Lt. Commander Data, Dr. Julian Bashir, and …
Inaccuracies In Patient Self-Report Of Genetic Testing Results For Hereditary Cancer Risks Could Impact Risk-Management Practices, Brittany Faye Sears
Inaccuracies In Patient Self-Report Of Genetic Testing Results For Hereditary Cancer Risks Could Impact Risk-Management Practices, Brittany Faye Sears
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Pathogenic variants (PV) or likely pathogenic variants (LPV) in a cancer risk gene increase lifetime risks of developing cancer. National guidelines provide evidence-based recommendations on cancer risk management (CRM) strategies tailored to the cancer risks associated with PV/LPV in different genes. Emotional responses after learning of a PV/LPV have been studied as predictors of patient adherence to CRM, but less attention has been given to whether patients remember their actual genetic test results and the impact this may have on subsequent adherence to CRM. We surveyed a group of 114 participants registered with the Inherited Cancer Registry (ICARE), all of …
Predicting Future Well-Being Among United States Youth Who Attempted Suicide And Survived, Bingjie Tong
Predicting Future Well-Being Among United States Youth Who Attempted Suicide And Survived, Bingjie Tong
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
After a non-fatal suicide attempt, survivors commonly endorse the goal of building a life worth living; however, there have been few investigations of good outcomes after non-fatal suicide attempts. Our prior study of a national sample of United States youth found that 7 years after a non-fatal suicide attempt, approximately 13% of adolescents (75 out of 574) achieved a well-being profile at or above the top quartile of non-suicidal peers, a status which we term as good future well-being (FWB). The present investigation focused on potential predictors of FWB, including self-esteem, positive mood, family connectedness, and school belongingness, drawn from …

This thesis discusses the importance of embracing religion and spirituality in the workplace as an aspect of workplace diversity. This document aims to help us understand the definition of spirituality at the workplace and its constituents.
We conducted a literature review from predominant scholars about the salience of spirituality and religion at the workplace and its relevance to building meaning, connectedness, and a sense of belonging. We will also review Maslow's theory of Human Needs, his research on human peak-experiences, and its correlation to self-actualization and transcendence.
We will present a new model of Spirituality and Religion at the workplace …
The Specifics Of Specific Learning Disability: An Analysis Of State-Level Eligibility Criteria And Response To Intervention Practices, Lora M. Williams
The Specifics Of Specific Learning Disability: An Analysis Of State-Level Eligibility Criteria And Response To Intervention Practices, Lora M. Williams
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The field of specific learning disability (SLD) in the United States has changed considerably since reauthorization of the Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA; (§3007); State Education Agencies (SEAs) have been transitioning away from the severe discrepancy model of SLD identification and towards a Response to Intervention (RTI) model (Hauerwas et al, 2013). This study aimed to review SLD practices in the United States through the analysis of SEA documents and to evaluate the progress made since the reauthorization of IDEA. The aim of the current study was to provide a snapshot of 1) how SEA regulations defined SLD; 2) when …
Development Of Membrane Assisted Recovery Of Solids (Mars) Technology For Nutrient Management In Decentralized Wastewater Treatment Systems, Itzé Alejandra Kenney
Development Of Membrane Assisted Recovery Of Solids (Mars) Technology For Nutrient Management In Decentralized Wastewater Treatment Systems, Itzé Alejandra Kenney
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Increasing global populations will result in a rise of eutrophic wastewater and an increased need in food supply. Both problems share a commonality: nutrients. Not all communities are equipped to handle one or both of those challenges, considering that typical solutions require large and energy intensive technologies. Wastewater treatment in most major cities is done through centralized treatment plants, which is not feasible for places with limited resources. Decentralized wastewater treatment systems (DWTS) have been developed as an alternative solution for those communities, but they still struggle to sustainably treat nutrients such as ammonium (NH4) and phosphate (PO4^(3-)). Zeolite has …
Assessing Reported Use Of Clinical Genetic Counseling Skills, Nicole M. Wright
Assessing Reported Use Of Clinical Genetic Counseling Skills, Nicole M. Wright
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Genetic Counseling (GC) is striving to become a more evidence-based field, but the absence of a clearly defined taxonomy of clinical skills is impeding efforts to systematically study and compare GC processes. Several frameworks such as the Reciprocal Engagement Model (REM) and FOCUS-GC have outlined strategies and behaviors used to meet patient needs, but neither include comprehensive descriptions of existing skills or delineate which are actually being used most commonly in clinical practice. The purpose of this study was to compile a large list of demonstrable genetic counseling skills and determine how often clinical genetic counselors (GCs) report using them …
Interpreting 9/11: Religious Or Political Event?, Fadime Apaydin
Interpreting 9/11: Religious Or Political Event?, Fadime Apaydin
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Terrorism or violence can be triggered by a variety of circumstances, including the religious, cultural, political, or economic conditions of the social environment, as well as the perpetrator’s personal characteristics. However, studies conducted in the aftermath of 9/11 have largely described the attacks as religious events, arguing that religion inherently causes violence or that religion is the main motivation for violence. The primary argument for the approach adopted by such studies is that secular institutions are inclined to be less violent than religious ones. A second approach, on the other hand, fundamentally opposes the arguments that led to describing the …
Measurements Of Generalizability And Adjustment For Bias In Clinical Trials, Yuanyuan Lu
Measurements Of Generalizability And Adjustment For Bias In Clinical Trials, Yuanyuan Lu
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
While randomized controlled trials (RCTs) are widely used as a gold standard in clinical research and public health, they are criticized because of a potential lack of generalizability, as the trial patients may be unrepresentative of the target patient population. Few research addresses how to assess and evaluate the generalizability of RCTs. As we know, patients are rarely selected on a random basis from a well-defined patient population of interest into a clinical trial. Generalizing findings from the RCT samples to the patient population has begun to receive increasing attention. We simulate a patient population with treatment effect size of …
Moderators Of Cannibalism Among Herbivorous Insects, Christyn A. Geniesse
Moderators Of Cannibalism Among Herbivorous Insects, Christyn A. Geniesse
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Cannibalism, or the killing and consumption of individuals of the same species, is historically regarded as uncommon among carnivores, but even more so among herbivorous, plant-eating animals. However, recently there is a rapidly growing literature on herbivorous insects, and here I conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of these new studies with the goals to synthesize what can moderate or promote cannibalism in this trophic group. After screening 3,791 candidate articles, I identified 50 studies that report manipulative experiments of cannibalism among herbivorous insects and found 20 different moderators—such as presence of predators, herbivore age, starvation status, temperature, and injury. …
Impact Of Perinatal Exposure Counseling On Patient Reported Emotional Outcomes And Decisional Empowerment, Madison J. Lake
Impact Of Perinatal Exposure Counseling On Patient Reported Emotional Outcomes And Decisional Empowerment, Madison J. Lake
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In the United States, 88.8% of pregnant patients utilize at least one medication during pregnancy. The lack of guidance on medication use and teratogen exposures during pregnancy can induce stress and impact decision-making about continuing or adding medication in pregnancy. Although previous research has evaluated changes in patient knowledge after exposure counseling, we are unaware of studies that examined emotional outcomes or the extent to which patients feel informed and empowered to make decisions related to medication use. Our quasi-experimental study measured changes in patients’ feelings of guilt, anxiety, and decisional empowerment after receiving exposure counseling from trained teratogen information …
Effects Of Acid Hydrolyzed Chitosan Derivatives On Mhv Infection, Krishna Sharma
Effects Of Acid Hydrolyzed Chitosan Derivatives On Mhv Infection, Krishna Sharma
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Coronaviruses have recently been under significant scrutiny due to the ongoing covid-19 pandemic that began in Wuhan, China, and subsequently spread to the rest of the world. Chitosan is a common chemical from crustaceans that has several desirable properties due to being biodegradable, non-toxic, and, most importantly, cheap. It also exhibits anti-viral properties, which is the focus of these experiments. We tested the toxicity of the chitosan on cell lines to see how much chitosan the cells can tolerate. We hydrolyzed the chitosan in acid, and the chitosan fibrils added cell lines to see if the anti-viral properties increased in …
Individual Differences In Posttraumatic Growth Following Bone Marrow Transplantation, Michelle Renee Widows
Individual Differences In Posttraumatic Growth Following Bone Marrow Transplantation, Michelle Renee Widows
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Prior research suggests that the diagnosis and treatment of cancer can result in the experience of positive outcomes, or positive growth. Based on Schaefer and Moos' (1992) model of adaptation of life crises, the current study examined the predictive utility of personality traits, coping, and social support in accounting for variability in posttraumatic growth and whether trauma appraisals, social constraint, and mental health were associated with the degree of posttraumatic growth in cancer patients who had undergone bone marrow transplantation. Participants were 53 females and 19 males treated with BMT an average of 24 months previously. Qualitative reports of posttraumatic …

This study evaluated the use of a technology-based self-monitoring intervention augmented with differential reinforcement and focused on self-monitoring of performance to increase task completion and reduce off-task behavior in students with disabilities. Three students with disabilities served in an inclusive 5th-grade general education classroom participated in the study. A concurrent multiple baseline design across participants with an ABC sequence was used to evaluate the intervention outcomes. A general education teacher of the participating students implemented the intervention that involved student training on self-monitoring of performance (SMP) using an app and delivery of reinforcement contingent on task completion and accuracy of …
Evaluation Of Hydrodynamic Effects Of Waterway Restoration On An Estuarine Ecosystem, Megan Kramer
Evaluation Of Hydrodynamic Effects Of Waterway Restoration On An Estuarine Ecosystem, Megan Kramer
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Estuaries are hydrodynamically complex for they are influenced by tidal forces, freshwater flows, salinity variations, and often intricate coastal land morphology. Furthermore, many estuaries are subject to constant anthropogenic stresses due to dense coastal populations, which are expected to be exacerbated by changing climate trends. The 1,800 home residential Manchester Waterway (MW) community located in Charlotte Harbor (along the Gulf of Mexico in Southwest Florida), is interested in improving boat access by restoring a previous connection between the local waterway and the harbor, separated by a barrier peninsula. The proposed connections aim to reduce boat traffic and travel time through …
Impact Of Arginine Metabolism And Sensing In Mouse Models Of Alzheimer’S Disease, Chao Ma
Impact Of Arginine Metabolism And Sensing In Mouse Models Of Alzheimer’S Disease, Chao Ma
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Alzheimer’s disease (AD) remains the most common neurodegenerative disease in the central nervous system (CNS), with amyloidosis and tauopathy as their two main hallmarks. Typical AD pathologies include cerebral plaques deposited by amyloid-β, neurofibrillary tangles aggregated by tau, and neuroinflammation caused by activated brain myeloid cells. A critical theme is centered on impaired brain metabolism. Emerging evidence showed that impaired arginine metabolism was a novel biomarker pathway for AD. The manipulation of arginine metabolism by a critical enzyme arginase 1 (ARG1) in neurons indicated therapeutic benefits in alleviating tau pathology. Balanced cellular proteostasis was governed by the mechanistic target of …

Exploring The Effectiveness Of A Life-Skills Program In A Florida Prison Through A Social Bond And General Strain Theory Perspective, Danielle M. Thomas
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Prison programs have existed for decades; however, recent attention towards prison reform has raised awareness of the importance of correctional education. Research has shown that many of these programs are highly effective for incarcerated individuals in that program participation is likely to decrease recidivism and increase post-release employment success. Using in-depth interviews with 40 currently incarcerated men – 20 of whom participated in a 2-year prison program (the LIFERS program) and 20 who did not – and matched institutional records for visitation and disciplinary infractions, this study expands on the current research by assessing additional measures of program efficacy, including …
Creating A Short, Public-Domain Version Of The Cpai-2: Using An Algorithmic Approach To Develop Public-Domain Measures Of Indigenous Personality Traits, Mukhunth Raghavan
Creating A Short, Public-Domain Version Of The Cpai-2: Using An Algorithmic Approach To Develop Public-Domain Measures Of Indigenous Personality Traits, Mukhunth Raghavan
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In this study we aimed to create a short, public-domain analogue of the Cross-Cultural (Chinese) Personality Assessment Inventory (CPAI-2; F. M. Cheung et al., 1996). Emic (culture-specific) traits measured by the CPAI-2 are purportedly specific to the Chinese culture and argued to not be fully captured by the consensus Big Five personality trait taxonomy. Research suggests that CPAI-2 traits may have unique predictive power, especially in non-Western contexts. However, research has been hampered by several limitations of the measure. The inventory is proprietary and long, with 341 items forming 28 scales and four factors. Cross-cultural personality research would benefit from …

Air pollution is a global concern. Cities around the world fail to meet air quality standards set by the World Health Organization Air Quality Guidelines, which has a significant impact on public health. As the capital city and largest metropolitan region of Nepal, Kathmandu is a hotspot for urban pollution in South Asia. Nepal faces emissions from both internal and external sources. External sources include emissions from Nepal’s neighboring countries of India and China and emissions resulting from tourism. Internal sources of pollution in the country include brick and cement factories, consumption of energy from traditional sources such as biomass, …
“Memories Rescued From The Mire Of Oblivion”: The 1885 Rebecca Nurse Monument And Salem Witch Trials Commemoration, Alaina K. Scapicchio
“Memories Rescued From The Mire Of Oblivion”: The 1885 Rebecca Nurse Monument And Salem Witch Trials Commemoration, Alaina K. Scapicchio
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This thesis is a study and contextualization of the 1885 Rebecca Nurse Monument and dedication in Danvers, Massachusetts, which took place around the bicentennial anniversary of the Salem witch trials. It places this nineteenth-century commemoration in conversation with the other centennial anniversaries of the witch trials. The Salem witch trials have been studied extensively by historians who have sought to determine the causes of the widespread panic. Other scholars have examined the memory of 1692 in later generations, paying particular attention to the landscape of modern Salem and their tourist economy. Few scholars, however, have given extended consideration to the …
The Effects Of Video Feedback On Running Form, Mariana Morante
The Effects Of Video Feedback On Running Form, Mariana Morante
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Individuals should use proper form while running to prevent injuries. Running with rear-foot strikes (RFS) are associated with greater injury (e.g., Arendse et al., 2004; Daoud et al, 2012), while front-foot strikes (FFS) and mid-foot strikes (MFS) are found to produce less impact on a runner’s leg. Video feedback has improved athletic skill performance in a number of sports, which frequently targets athletic form (BenitezSantiago & Miltenberger, 2016; Kelley & Miltenberger, 2016; Schenk & Miltenberger, 2019). Proper running form is important for injury prevention and can promote continued engagement in running as a long-term form of exercise. A behavior analytic …
Role Of Bmi1 In Acute Lung Injury, María Helena Hernández-Cuervo
Role Of Bmi1 In Acute Lung Injury, María Helena Hernández-Cuervo
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Acute Lung Injury (ALI) is a set of signs and symptoms that lead to acute hypoxemic respiratory failure characterized by bilateral pulmonary infiltrates not attributed to cardiogenic origin. It is caused by a massive innate immune response, with the migration of white blood cells (neutrophils and macrophages principally) and a cytokine storm, followed by alterations in mitochondrial function, increase in reactive oxygen species production, and oxidative stress that in turn induces more mitochondrial damage. Several studies have shown that mitochondrial alterations are key events in the mechanism of ALI and reducing mitochondrial dysfunction could be a possible target in the …
Accelerated Resolution Therapy (Art): A Review Of Treatments For Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Henry B. Burns Jr.
Accelerated Resolution Therapy (Art): A Review Of Treatments For Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Henry B. Burns Jr.
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In the past, patients diagnosed with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) were treated with medications that masked their conditions or through the use of various mental health treatments like Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), Prolonged Exposure Therapy (PE) or Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) with limited success. Each of these treatments, lasting weeks or months, are mentally exhausting for the patient, and, over time, contribute to burn-out for the practitioner as well. The purpose of the study was to compare mental health treatments from the practitioner’s point of view regarding burn out. Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) is a new form of …
Anthropocene Fiction: Empathy, Kinship, And The Troubled Waters At The End Of The World, Megan Mandell Stowe
Anthropocene Fiction: Empathy, Kinship, And The Troubled Waters At The End Of The World, Megan Mandell Stowe
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Anthropocene literature features characters and environments grappling with the devastation of climate change. Donna Haraway’s term Chthulucene narrows this category further by exposing the tentacular connections between overpopulation, dependence on material goods, species loss, and other facets of global warming—such as water as a resource. Three novels of the Chthulucene exhibit these connections, centering on the importance of water to both ecologies and personal identity. As seen in the novels, place attachment brings ecology and identity together by forging a stewardship between person and location, often resulting in efforts to defend and preserve a place. In Octavia Butler’s Parable of …
Transfer Students And The Excess Credit Hour Surcharge: A Program Evaluation Of An Excess Credit Hour Surcharge Training, Chandra Davis
Transfer Students And The Excess Credit Hour Surcharge: A Program Evaluation Of An Excess Credit Hour Surcharge Training, Chandra Davis

The transfer student population is rising on college campuses in the United States. Consequently, higher education institutions want to better understand how to support this growing and diverse population. Faced with increased demand for accountability, colleges and universities have developed various initiatives to increase college graduation rates. One such initiative is the Excess Credit Hour Surcharge. The Florida state statute, commonly known as the Excess Credit Hour Surcharge, was introduced by legislators in 2009. The Florida legislature incentivizes state university students to graduate promptly and efficiently to avoid a surcharge. However, the legislation affects transfer students in a unique way …
Easing The Postpartum Return To Work: Workplace Resources, Work Interference With Family, And Health Behaviors, Aashna M. Waiwood
Easing The Postpartum Return To Work: Workplace Resources, Work Interference With Family, And Health Behaviors, Aashna M. Waiwood
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
While work-family matters continue to receive increasing attention, one group that faces considerable health, childcare, and work adjustment challenges has remained relatively ignored and understudied – postpartum mothers returning to employment. Driven by the work-home resources model as theoretical backing, I used path analytic methods to examine the mechanisms by which key workplace resources for postpartum women, including family-focused support from organizational stakeholders, flexibility availability, and breastfeeding resources, relate to their subsequent perceptions of work interference with family and engagement in physical activity and high quality/quantity sleep. Specifically, four waves of data were collected from a sample of 129 women …
