Desert In The Springs: Ethnography Of A Food Desert, Margeaux Alana Chavez
Desert In The Springs: Ethnography Of A Food Desert, Margeaux Alana Chavez
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
"Food desert" commonly describes food insecure areas with few fresh food outlets. Though used in a number of sources, the definition of "food desert" remains largely undeveloped and research is often deficit oriented, failing to account for community assets that may exist within food deserts but are underutilized or under-supported. Using an assets-based, ethnographic approach, this study combines GIS and survey methodology with participant observation and qualitative interviews to assess the potential positive effect of urban agriculture on food accessibility in Sulphur Springs, a USDA identified urban food desert in Tampa, Florida.
Ethnographic data suggest that within this neighborhood, residents …
Rural Communities: How Do Individuals Perceive Change When Industry Enters The Area?, Katherine Danielle Ferrari
Rural Communities: How Do Individuals Perceive Change When Industry Enters The Area?, Katherine Danielle Ferrari
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
As the landscape of the United States changes and world resources face depletion, shale gas development has become a major social justice issue. Social workers may be called upon to help support communities undergoing change from industry as well as the environmental and social justice concerns that are arising in areas with rich natural resource supplies.
This research examines how a rural population perceives change when industry enters an area. It explores community change and social justice concerns that are occurring with shale gas development in order to help determine implications for social work practice.
Using a phenomenological approach, this …
Cd44 Containing Complexes As A Therapeutic Target In Multiple Myeloma, Anthony Gebhard
Cd44 Containing Complexes As A Therapeutic Target In Multiple Myeloma, Anthony Gebhard
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Our laboratory recently reported that treatment with the d-amino acid containing peptide HYD1 induces necrotic cell death in multiple myeloma (MM) cell lines. Due to the intriguing biological activity and promising in vivo activity of HYD1, we pursued strategies for increasing the therapeutic efficacy of the parent linear peptide. These efforts led to the development of a cyclized peptidomimetic, MTI-101, with increased in vitro activity and robust in vivo activity as a single agent using two myeloma models that consider the bone marrow microenvironment. MTI-101 treatment resulted in mechanistically similar hallmarks of HYD1 induced cell death, namely the generation of …
Examining The Effectiveness Of Intensive Language Action Therapy In Individuals With Nonfluent Aphasia, Rachel A. Goff
Examining The Effectiveness Of Intensive Language Action Therapy In Individuals With Nonfluent Aphasia, Rachel A. Goff
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Abstract
Background: Individuals with nonfluent aphasia may have significant difficulties with functional spoken communication tasks in their daily life. Aphasia treatment held in a group setting may provide an enriched communicative context wherein the requirements of spoken language are similar to those within functional day-to-day communicative situations. Thus engaging in a spoken language activity in a group setting may directly target generalization of trained skills to those required in real-life, social communication situations. The present study is concerned with an aphasia group treatment that requires focused practice of spoken language during a social-functional communication task. Intensive Language Action Therapy (ILAT) …
A Three Dimensional Scaffold For Anticancer Drug Development, Yvonne Girard
A Three Dimensional Scaffold For Anticancer Drug Development, Yvonne Girard
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Attrition rates for anticancer drugs are much higher than any other therapeutic area. Only 5%#37; of the agents that demonstrate anticancer activity in the preclinical stages of development demonstrate clinical efficacy in phase III trials. This high attrition rate becomes alarming when we consider that the cost of research and development can amount to 1 billion dollars. To exacerbate this problem, many new cancer drugs are being discontinued, withdrawn or suspended. The reasons for this high attrition rate are complex and may be partly attributed to suboptimal preclinical strategies such as the use of two-dimensional (2D) cell culture systems to …
Prenatal Stress, Depression, And Herpes Viral Titers, Pao-Chu Hsu
Prenatal Stress, Depression, And Herpes Viral Titers, Pao-Chu Hsu
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Recent studies suggest that some cases of prenatal depression may be associated with reactivation of latent infections of the herpesvirus family. The possible relationships among stress, prenatal depression, and herpes viral reactivation in pregnancy are understudied and the molecular pathways such as the neuroimmune biogenic amine pathway are unidentified. Chronic stress shifts the T helper-1 cell (Th1) cytokine profile to a Th2 profile, which favors virus induced pathogenesis and survival. Pregnancy is also associated with a similar Th2 dominance. In non-pregnant individuals, exposure to psychological or physical stress may be associated with latent herpes viral reactivation and could result in …
Predictors Of The Incidence And Charges For Lumbar Spinal Fusion Surgery In Florida Hospitals During 2010, Anna Ialynychev
Predictors Of The Incidence And Charges For Lumbar Spinal Fusion Surgery In Florida Hospitals During 2010, Anna Ialynychev
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Over the past several decades rates of spine surgeries in the U.S. have increased dramatically. Spinal fusion surgery rates, in particular, have grown exponentially despite being one of the most costly, invasive, and controversial methods for treating patients suffering from back conditions. Furthermore, lumbar fusion surgeries continue to be performed at increasing rates despite a lack of scientific evidence and consensus that they are cost-effective and produce better clinical outcomes than less radical treatment of lower back pain. As a result, large amounts of healthcare dollars continue to be invested in these costly procedures which are potentially dangerous and have …
Counselor Discomfort With Sexual Issues And Supervisory Role, Barbara Lofrisco
Counselor Discomfort With Sexual Issues And Supervisory Role, Barbara Lofrisco
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
ABSTRACT
Sexual issues are common among the general population; therefore it is likely that clients suffer with them whether or not they are presenting issues. Because unresolved sexual issues may contribute to harm, counselors have an ethical obligation to ensure these issues are addressed during therapy. Yet, many fail to do so for a variety of reasons. Because clinical supervisors are in a unique position to nurture and mentor novice counselors, their influence is salient to this issue.
Although some research has been done to address this issue, results are inconclusive and somewhat contradictory. This study attempts to fill in …
A Monte Carlo Approach To Change Point Detection In A Liver Transplant, Alexia Melissa Makris
A Monte Carlo Approach To Change Point Detection In A Liver Transplant, Alexia Melissa Makris
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Patient survival post liver transplant (LT) is important to both the patient and the center's accreditation, but over the years physicians have noticed that distant patients struggle with post LT care. I hypothesized that patient's distance from the transplant center had a detrimental effect on post LT survival. I suspected Hepatitis C (HCV) and Hepatocellular Carcinoma (HCC) patients would deteriorate due to their recurrent disease and there is a need for close monitoring post LT. From the current literature it was not clear if patients' distance from a transplant center affects outcomes post LT. Firozvi et al. (Firozvi AA, 2008) …
Understanding Pedestrian And Bicyclist Compliance And Safety Impacts Of Different Walk Modes At Signalized Intersections For A Livable Community, Jacob Allen Mirabella
Understanding Pedestrian And Bicyclist Compliance And Safety Impacts Of Different Walk Modes At Signalized Intersections For A Livable Community, Jacob Allen Mirabella
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
With increasing energy costs as well as rampant congestion in major U.S. cities, the popularity of walk and bike mode choices have increased in recent years. Thus, the obtainment of a comprehensive knowledge of pedestrian and bicyclist behaviors is of great importance.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that 11.1%#37; of pedestrian fatalities and 18.5%#37; of bicyclist fatalities in the U.S. occurred in Florida in 2011, which accounts for just 6.1%#37; of the nation's population. Additionally, intersections are hotspots for vehicle-pedestrian conflicts, which is confirmed by the Federal Highway Administration's estimate that nearly one in five pedestrian fatalities occur …
Assessing Appropriate Technology Handwashing Stations In Mali, West Africa, Colleen Claire Naughton
Assessing Appropriate Technology Handwashing Stations In Mali, West Africa, Colleen Claire Naughton
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Proper hand hygiene is the most effective and efficient method to prevent over 1.3 million deaths annually from diarrheal disease and Acute Respiratory Infections (ARIs). Hand hygiene is also indispensable in achieving the fourth Millennium Development Goal (MDG) to reduce the childhood mortality rate by 2/3rds between 1990 and 2015. Handwashing has been found in a systematic review of studies to reduce diarrhea by 47%#37; and is, thus, capable of preventing a million deaths (Curtis et. al., 2003). Despite this evidence, hand washing rates remain seriously low in the developing world (Scott et al., 2008).
This study developed and implemented …
Longitudinal Validation And Diagnostic Accuracy Of The Minnesota Borderline Personality Disorder Scale (Mbpd), Elizabeth Rojas
Longitudinal Validation And Diagnostic Accuracy Of The Minnesota Borderline Personality Disorder Scale (Mbpd), Elizabeth Rojas
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) has been previously conceptualized as an extreme variant of normal personality traits, captured by continuous indices. A previous study successfully developed and validated a self-report BPD measure, the Minnesota Borderline Personality Disorder Scale (MBPD). I conducted two studies aimed at providing further validation for this measure. Results from Study 1 (clinical sample of substance users) indicated that MBPD exhibited strong positive correlations with measures of convergent validity (self-report and diagnostic measures). Additionally, the MBPD showed similar correlations with external correlates as those of the convergent validity measures, in addition to incremental utility in predicting these external …
The Determinants Of Antiretroviral Therapy Adherence And The Relationship Of Healthcare Expenditures To Adherence Among Florida Medicaid-Insured Patients Diagnosed With Hiv Or Aids, Zachary Pruitt
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Research supports the clinical and societal benefits of antiretroviral treatment (ART) for people living with HIV or AIDS (PLWHA). However, factors associated with ART adherence and the relationship of ART adherence to total healthcare expenditures are not well understood.
The research data included Florida Medicaid claims for five years (July 2006 through June 2011). All subjects (n=514) were HIV-positive, adult, non-pregnant, and ART naïve for at least 12 months prior to their 24 month measurement period. Each subject was categorized as adherent (>90%#37;) or non-adherent (<90%#37;) based upon medication possession ratios (MPR). Total expenditures were payments Medicaid made to providers and pharmacies.
Objective 1 modeled the logit probability of a subject being non-adherent to ART …
90%#37;)>Spatial Distribution Of Nitrogen Oxides, Benzene, Toluene, Ethylbenzene, And Xylenes In Hillsborough County, Florida: An Investigation Of Impacts Of Urban Forests On Ambient Concentrations Of Air Pollutants Associated With Traffic, Jill Sears
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Urban air pollution is responsible for high levels of morbidity and mortality in exposed populations due to its effects on cardiovascular and respiratory function. Transportation-related air pollutants account for the majority of harmful air pollution in urban areas. Forests are known to reduce air pollution through their ability to facilitate dry deposition and atmospheric gas exchange. This work characterizes the interactions between transportation air pollutants and urban forests in Hillsborough County, Florida. A highly spatially resolved passive air sampling campaign was conducted to characterize local concentrations of nitrogen oxides, benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes (BTEX) in Hillsborough County, Florida. Sampling …
Resistance And Tolerance To Trematode Parasites In Larval Anurans, Brittany Sears
Resistance And Tolerance To Trematode Parasites In Larval Anurans, Brittany Sears
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Nearly every species on the planet has at least one parasite, which, by definition, incurs a
cost in the host. Therefore, organisms must resist parasites - preventing or reducing infections -
or tolerate parasites - reducing the costs of infection - in order to maintain their fitness despite
the presence of parasites. Here, I investigated: 1) whether parasitic, larval trematodes (cercariae)
can detect the least resistant tadpole host species, 2) a hypothetical framework for how host life
history impacts the utilization of inflammation and thus, resistance and tolerance, 3) whether a
common anesthesia technique used in experimental infections immunocompromises tadpoles, …
Treatment Maintenance Of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy For Anxiety In Youth With Autism Spectrum Disorders, Robert Rein Selles
Treatment Maintenance Of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy For Anxiety In Youth With Autism Spectrum Disorders, Robert Rein Selles
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Anxiety disorders commonly co-occur in children and adolescents with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Recently, treatment of anxiety using cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) has been modified and studied in youth with ASD, with results consistently demonstrating positive treatment outcomes. In typically developing populations, CBT gains are well maintained as long as 14-years post-treatment; however, maintenance of CBT has not yet been studied in anxious youth with ASD. Using a sample of 32 youth who previously completed one of three CBT for anxiety in ASD treatment studies, the present study re-assessed parent report of anxiety symptoms in youth, 12-26 months (M …
Continuing Attachment Bonds To The Deceased: A Study Of Bereaved Youth And Their Caregivers, Erica Hill Sirrine
Continuing Attachment Bonds To The Deceased: A Study Of Bereaved Youth And Their Caregivers, Erica Hill Sirrine
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Although grief is a universal experience impacting the lives of many children and adolescents each year, not much study has been afforded to this population. In addition, the concept of a continuing attachment bond (CAB) or ongoing relationship to the deceased and its role as adaptive or maladaptive in the bereavement process is in its infancy of research among adult populations and is largely unstudied among bereaved youth. This mixed-methods study attempted to bridge the gap by examining the relationship between CABs among a sample of 50 bereaved youth (ages 11-17) and their bereaved adult caregivers. In addition, the study …
Colors And Mapping: The Right To Receive Information, Kathryn Stephanie Skupien
Colors And Mapping: The Right To Receive Information, Kathryn Stephanie Skupien
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Color is used in everything we see and do and it often can be used for effect and representation, particularly on maps and transportation signage. This study explores the issues that the color blind population exhibits when viewing these maps and signs. Seeing that 8%#37; of the male population is afflicted with some form of color blindness, it is pertinent that research reflect these issues and take into consideration the Right to Receive Information for this population. A qualitative method using Photovoice and interviews was used to determine whether this population considers itself having a disability and what solutions can …
Molecular And Cellular Mechanisms Of Reelin Signaling In The Adult Hippocampus, Justin Howard Trotter
Molecular And Cellular Mechanisms Of Reelin Signaling In The Adult Hippocampus, Justin Howard Trotter
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The Reelin signaling pathway is critical for neuronal migration during development and the function of excitatory synapses in the adult forebrain. Despite a growing body of evidence implicating impaired Reelin signaling in the pathogenesis of numerous neuropsychiatric and neurodegenerative disorders, including Schizophrenia and Alzheimer's disease, little is known still regarding the specific molecular and cellular mechanisms whereby Reelin signaling modulates the function of synapses to enable normal learning and memory. In this dissertation, we addressed these knowledge gaps by identifying mechanisms of Reelin proteolysis following synaptic potentiation (Chapter 2) and dissociated the synaptic function of Reelin signaling at excitatory (Chapter …
Innate Immune Responses To Respiratory Syncytial Virus: Age-Associated Changes, Terianne Maiko Wong
Innate Immune Responses To Respiratory Syncytial Virus: Age-Associated Changes, Terianne Maiko Wong
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection causes ~64 million cases of respiratory disease and 200,000 deaths annually worldwide, yet there is no broadly effective prophylactic or treatment regimen. RSV can produce acute respiratory illness in patients of all ages but strikes the age extremes, infants and the elderly, with highest frequency presumably due to innate immune deficiencies. A higher morbidity and mortality has been reported for the elderly above 65 years of age, which has been attributed to immune senescence. Efforts to generate an effective vaccine have thus far been unsuccessful.
The innate immune system provides the first line of defense …
When Celebrity Women Tweet: Examining Authenticity, Empowerment, And Responsibility In The Surveillance Of Celebrity Twitter, Megan M. Wood
When Celebrity Women Tweet: Examining Authenticity, Empowerment, And Responsibility In The Surveillance Of Celebrity Twitter, Megan M. Wood
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This thesis is a textual analysis of stories in online celebrity news articles about celebrity women and their use of Twitter. It adds to the burgeoning discussion about gendered and racialized bodies online using scholarship from critical feminist, surveillance, and digital media studies. Throughout, my work attends to notions of authenticity and surveillance, examining how what I term a "call to authenticity"--the use of technologies of self-surveillance to verify "authentic" displays of the self--serves to animate contradictory post-feminist paradigms of femininity which function together to discipline and subjugate femininity. I ask: How do post-feminist questions of empowerment and responsibility become …
Development Of A Novel Method For Deriving Thresholds Of Toxicological Concern (Ttcs) For Vaccine Constituents, Jennifer Jessica White
Development Of A Novel Method For Deriving Thresholds Of Toxicological Concern (Ttcs) For Vaccine Constituents, Jennifer Jessica White
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Abstract
Safety assessment relating to the presence of impurities, residual materials and contaminants in vaccines is a focus area of research at the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Sponsors who submit Investigational New Drug (IND) applications for new vaccine products must report the results of safety assessments to the Division of Vaccines and Related Products Applications (DVRPA). Scientifically defining thresholds of toxicological concern (TTCs) as they apply to vaccine constituents will provide a useful aid to the sponsors and public regarding safety assessments of compounds for which there is little or no toxicity data. TTCs are mathematically modeled …
Histone Deacetylases As Targets For Melanoma Immunotherapy, David Michael Woods
Histone Deacetylases As Targets For Melanoma Immunotherapy, David Michael Woods
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Cancer represents the second leading cause of death in the United States. For many malignancies, currently available treatment options offer little long-lasting survival benefits to patients. However, recent studies have shown immunotherapeutic approaches to be an attractive strategy to cancer treatment. While many current immunotherapeutic strategies convey durable responses, such responses are only seen in a minority of patients. An increased understanding of the mechanisms governing tumor immunogenicity and the biology of immune responses is crucial to improving upon the efficacy of current and future cancer immunotherapies. Histone deacetylases (HDACs), enzymes classically associated with regulation of gene expression, have been …

Synthesis Of Amphiphilic Α- And Γ-Aapeptides For Antimicrobial, Self-Assembly, And Mineralization Studies, Mohamad N. Amin
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Seven novel, amphiphilic AApeptides were prepared. Two cationic, lipo-α-AApeptides, NA-75 and NA-77 were found to possess potent antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive bacteria, with almost no hemolytic activity. In addition to NA-75 and 77, four amphiphilic, γ-AApeptides, NA-133, 135, 137, and 139, and one anionic lipo-α-AApeptide, NA-81, were prepared for molecular self-assembly studies, with several interesting nanostructures observed by TEM. Mineralization of calcium carbonate from gaseous CO2 and Ca2+ in the presence of the 7 AApeptide amphiphiles was also observed by optical microscopy. Several AApeptides were found to be able to influence CaCO3 crystal morphology. Another α-AApeptide, NA-63, was synthesized by …

Factors Related To The Professional Management Of Early Breastfeeding Problems: Perspectives Of Lactation Consultants, Erica Hesch Anstey
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Addressing the sub-optimal breastfeeding initiation and duration rates has become a national priority. Inadequate support for addressing early breastfeeding challenges is compounded by a lack of collaboration between providers such as lactation professionals, nurses, pediatricians, and the family. The purpose of this exploratory study was to understand International Board Certified Lactation Consultants' (IBCLCs) perceived barriers to managing early breastfeeding problems. This qualitative study was guided by the symbolic interactionist framework through a grounded theory methodological approach. In-depth interviews were conducted with 30 IBCLCs from across Florida. IBCLCs were from a range of practice settings, including hospitals, WIC clinics, private practice, …
Investigation Of Colored Dissolved Organic Matter (Cdom) Optical Properties, Nutrients, And Salinity In Coastal Florida: Springshed To Estuaries, Ana Rosa Arellano
Investigation Of Colored Dissolved Organic Matter (Cdom) Optical Properties, Nutrients, And Salinity In Coastal Florida: Springshed To Estuaries, Ana Rosa Arellano
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Optical parameters measured via absorption spectroscopy and high-resolution fluorescence spectroscopy were used to characterize dissolved organic matter (DOM) in the springshed of Kings Bay, a spring-fed estuary located on Florida's Springs Coast. Over the past 40 years, springs supplying groundwater to Kings Bay have shown an increase in nitrate concentration. The overall goal of this project was to fingerprint wells and spring sites with elevated nitrogen concentrations using CDOM optical properties and establish relationships between nutrient and optical parameters. Samples were obtained from various sites: springs, Kings Bay surface (KBS), wells, coastal waters in and at the mouth of Crystal …
Nonword Processing In Bilingual Five Year Olds: Do Phonotactics Count?, Kyna Betancourt
Nonword Processing In Bilingual Five Year Olds: Do Phonotactics Count?, Kyna Betancourt
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Phonotactic processing is foundational to the word processing task in both monolingual and bilingual children (Li & Farkas, 2002; Pierrehumbert, 2001; Shook & Marian, 2013; Storkel & Morrisette, 2002). While the use of phonotactic information in word processing in monolingual children is relatively well documented, it is less well understood in bilingual children. The purpose of this study was to investigate how bilingual kindergartners process the phonotactic probabilities of their two languages. A set of nonwords was developed that manipulated the strength of phonotactic probability across both Spanish and English while also controlling the language environment of the experimental task …
Age Dependent Analysis And Modeling Of Prostate Cancer Data, Nana Osei Mensa Bonsu
Age Dependent Analysis And Modeling Of Prostate Cancer Data, Nana Osei Mensa Bonsu
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Growth rate of prostate cancer tumor is an important aspect of understanding the natural history of prostate cancer. Using real prostate cancer data from the SEER database with tumor size as a response variable, we have clustered the cancerous tumor sizes into age groups to enhance its analytical behavior. The rate of change of the response variable as a function of age is given for each cluster. Residual analysis attests to the quality of the analytical model and the subject estimates. In addition, we have identified the probability distribution that characterize the behavior of the response variable and proceeded with …
The Combined Effects Of Light And Temperature On Coral Bleaching: A Case Study Of The Florida Reef Tract Using Satellite Data, Brian Burnel Barnes
The Combined Effects Of Light And Temperature On Coral Bleaching: A Case Study Of The Florida Reef Tract Using Satellite Data, Brian Burnel Barnes
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Coral reefs are greatly impacted by the physical characteristics of the water surrounding them. Incidence and severity of mass coral bleaching and mortality events are increasing worldwide due primarily to increased water temperature, but also in response to other stressors. This decline in reef health demands clearer understanding of the compounding effects of multiple stressors, as well as widespread assessment of coral reef health in near-real time.
Satellites offer a means by which some of the physical stressors on coral reefs can be measured. The synoptic spatial coverage and high repeat sampling frequency of such instruments allow for a quantity …
