Response To Bullying (Rtb): Behavioral Skills And In Situ Training For Individuals Diagnosed With Intellectual Disabilities, Rebecca Lynn Stannis
Response To Bullying (Rtb): Behavioral Skills And In Situ Training For Individuals Diagnosed With Intellectual Disabilities, Rebecca Lynn Stannis
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Bullying is a continuing problem for adults with intellectual disabilities who live in group homes and attend adult day training settings together. Many different intervention approaches have been reviewed. Most research in this area focuses on bullying in schools with typically developing children, and therefore, a need for effective behavioral interventions for adults with intellectual disabilities still remains. Previous research has found success in teaching safety skills to a variety of populations using behavioral skills training (BST) and achieving generalization of these skills using in situ training (IST). This study evaluated BST to teach a response to bullying (RtB) to …
Influence Of Water Column Stratification And Nutrient Gradients On The Migratory Behavior Of The Red Tide Dinoflagellate, Karenia Brevis, Matthew Garrett
Influence Of Water Column Stratification And Nutrient Gradients On The Migratory Behavior Of The Red Tide Dinoflagellate, Karenia Brevis, Matthew Garrett
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Diel vertical migration (DVM) can offer motile phytoplankton a competitive advantage over other phytoplankton species. DVM has been well documented in the harmful dinoflagellate, Karenia brevis; however, the extent to which changes in nutrient regimes and density stratification modify migration patterns has not been thoroughly investigated. A 2 m experimental column was constructed with sensors and sampling ports at four depths to obtain fluorescence and temperature measurements and discrete water samples. The environmental parameters of the experimental column represented temperature and nutrient conditions found on the West Florida Shelf (WFS), where Karenia blooms frequently occur. Results demonstrated a clear …
School-Based Concussion Management: Implementation Characteristics Of Student Services Personnel, Jeffrey Garofano
School-Based Concussion Management: Implementation Characteristics Of Student Services Personnel, Jeffrey Garofano
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Concussion is an injury that disproportionately affects children and adolescents and has the potential to negatively impact school performance. Currently, a significant proportion of youth with concussion go unreported due to a lack of effective concussion surveillance procedures. Additionally, many individuals who have daily contact with youth (e.g., parents, teachers) lack training in how to assess or manage a concussion. Schools may be the ideal setting to address both of these problems as they have a high level of access to students and employ personnel (e.g., school psychologists, nurses, social workers, counselors) with experience in assessment and intervention. What is …
Characterization Of Noise Exposure For High-Volume Restaurant Workers, Desiree Gladieux
Characterization Of Noise Exposure For High-Volume Restaurant Workers, Desiree Gladieux
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Occupational hearing loss resulting from noise exposures encountered in the workplace affects millions of workers and costs hundreds of millions of dollars annually in Workers’ Compensation costs in the United States alone. Some industries have been well studied, and the presence of hazardous noise in the work environment established and documented. The restaurant industry is one in which little current data exists, but in which there may be cause for concern.
This work sought to quantify noise exposures for cooks, servers, and dishwashers and to determine whether or not any of these workers are at risk for Noise Induced Hearing …
The Association Between Sexual Harassment And Suicidality Among College Women, Renee Brown Hangartner
The Association Between Sexual Harassment And Suicidality Among College Women, Renee Brown Hangartner
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The prevalence of sexual harassment among college women has been reported to range from 33% to 97% (Klein, Apple, & Khan, 2011; Yoon, Funk, & Kropf, 2010) across the lifespan. In any one year of college, the prevalence of sexual harassment reported by women ranges from 33% to 57% (Crown & Roberts, 2007; Huerta, Cortina, Pang, Torges, & Magley, 2006). The severity and frequency of sexual harassment has been found to be related to reports of psychological distress (Nielsen & Einarsen, 2012), feelings of shame (Yoon et al., 2010), anxiety and depression symptoms (Murdoch, Pryor, Polusny, & Gackstetter, 2007), and …
Synthesis, Characterization And Ferroelectric Properties Of Ln-Type Znsno3 Nanostructures, Corisa Kons
Synthesis, Characterization And Ferroelectric Properties Of Ln-Type Znsno3 Nanostructures, Corisa Kons
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
With increasing focus on the ill health and environmental effects of lead there is a greater push to develop Pb-free devices and materials. To this extent, ecofriendly and earth abundant LiNbO3-type ZnSnO3, a derivative of the ABO3 perovskite structure, has a high theoretically predicted polarization making it an excellent choice as a suitable alternative to lead based material such as PZT. In this work we present a novel synthesis procedure for the growth of various ZnSnO3 nanostructures by combined physical/chemical processes. Various ZnSnO3 nanostructures of different dimensions were grown from a ZnO:Al template …
Design, Fabrication And Analysis Of A Paver Machine Push Bar Mechanism, Mahendra Palnati
Design, Fabrication And Analysis Of A Paver Machine Push Bar Mechanism, Mahendra Palnati
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Now-a-days, the major challenge that’s being faced by the concrete industry is the cleaning of concrete handling equipment. Concrete consists of aggregates, which harden with time, and the transportation of concrete mixture within the plant is a significant problem. This will not only increase the overall maintenance cost, but will lead to loss of raw materials, affect the rate of production, and reduce the lifetime of concrete handling equipment.
The present study focuses on the design and implementation of an adaptive cleaning mechanism in the concrete industry and its importance in achieving efficient cleaning, which is tested to verify its …
He_Rtland: The Violence Of Neoliberalism, Hector Sotomayor
He_Rtland: The Violence Of Neoliberalism, Hector Sotomayor
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Perhaps, under the consciousness of today, “neoliberalism” has defined our world during the previous and current centuries more than any other socioeconomic system. But the evolution of this ideology, which initially aimed to enhance, or rather, reinvent capitalism and individual freedom, has, in essence, induced an unrecognized problem. I argue that neoliberalism is the catalyst for much of the hostility in this globalized society where tensions and poverty are casualties of individual and corporate prosperity. Because of this revelation, I argue that neoliberalism inadvertently instills violence that is both unseen and gendered. In order to formulate my argument, I introduce …
North American River Otter (Lontra Canadensis) Presence And Habitat Analysis In Florida As Compared To Historical Data, Samantha Wilber
North American River Otter (Lontra Canadensis) Presence And Habitat Analysis In Florida As Compared To Historical Data, Samantha Wilber
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
North American river otters are considered common in the state of Florida, but their populations have not been studied since the 1980’s. Since that time, Florida’s human population has more than doubled, and many natural areas of Florida have been developed. The aim of this study was to determine the presence or absence of river otters at locations in Florida which they historically inhabited. Forty-six sample sites where otters were historically found were obtained from the Florida Museum of Natural History Mammals Master Database (FMNH MMD). These sites were condensed to two focus areas, in and around Alachua and Collier …

Evaluating The Effectiveness Of Values Based Training To Impact Physical Activity In Adults, Jessica Sykes
Evaluating The Effectiveness Of Values Based Training To Impact Physical Activity In Adults, Jessica Sykes
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This study aimed to investigate the use of values based training with typically developing adults to affect levels of physical activity recorded by FitBit Flex technology in the form of step count. Traditional approaches have shown promise but with mixed results. Interestingly, one must look outside of behavior analysis for interventions attempting to affect control by an individual’s covert verbal behavior. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) has been shown to be effective in various behavior change areas by using a values based approach that focuses on the control of rules and their motivative functions. An ACT training protocol (ACTr) consisting …
Evaluating Preference For And Effectiveness Of Telehealth And In-Person Parent Training, Jennifer Michelle Stich
Evaluating Preference For And Effectiveness Of Telehealth And In-Person Parent Training, Jennifer Michelle Stich
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Telehealth provides an alternative delivery form of parent training that allows practitioners to disseminate information and feedback at a distance. Telehealth can be as effective as in-person training (Wacker et al., 2013a; Wacker et al., 2013b; Vismara et al., 2009). Despite most telehealth studies indicating high satisfaction, research on patient satisfaction using telehealth has depended mostly on survey instruments, which limits definitive conclusions and may not translate into actual use or selection (Whitten & Love, 2005). The primary purpose of this study was to evaluate a procedure for identifying parent preference of in-person or telehealth training modalities. Secondary purposes were …
Let’S Move! Biocitizens And The Fat Kids On The Block, Mary Catherine Dickman
Let’S Move! Biocitizens And The Fat Kids On The Block, Mary Catherine Dickman
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This project analyzed First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move! campaign for how it constructs obesity and health. Let’s Move! is a national internet-based campaign to end childhood obesity. The literature on Let’s Move! is limited and focuses on the privatization and corporatization of children’s physical education in public schools. Taking an intersectional approach to critical fat studies, I use critical discourse analysis to investigate how the language used in the Let’s Move! campaign (re)enforces and (re)signifies cultural notions of fat as a social problem – specifically that fat bodies are diseased, unproductive, and a financial burden. I maintain that the …
Identifying Humanized Ecosystems: Anthropogenic Impacts, Intentionality, And Resource Acquisition At Crystal River (8ci1) And Roberts Island (8ci41), Charles Trevor Duke
Identifying Humanized Ecosystems: Anthropogenic Impacts, Intentionality, And Resource Acquisition At Crystal River (8ci1) And Roberts Island (8ci41), Charles Trevor Duke
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The impact of human activity on ecosystems is an issue at the forefront of global concern. Marine ecosystems are a particular concern, given their importance for human sustenance. Through the removal of species that are highly susceptible to the effects of overfishing, global fisheries have been driven to near collapse in recent decades. The long-term effects of such practices has resulted in declines in mean trophic level of aggregate fish catches over time, as well as decreasing diversity of species available for regular harvest (Jackson et al. 2001; Pauly et al. 1998). These supposedly “modern” problems have been recently identified …
Investigation Of The Effects Of Impulsivity And Executive Function On A Complex Prospective Memory Task, Emily Kellogg
Investigation Of The Effects Of Impulsivity And Executive Function On A Complex Prospective Memory Task, Emily Kellogg
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Prospective memory is colloquially known as “remembering to remember” and refers to forming an intention in the present time to fulfill at some point in the future. It has previously been studied within the context of executive functioning (i.e., purposive and goal directed behavior) and impulsive behaviors (e.g., gambling, risk seeking) within clinical populations. This study sought to further elucidate the relationships of impulsivity and executive functions on prospective memory in a non-clinical population. One hundred and nine undergraduates completed the UPPS-P impulsivity self-report questionnaire, three cognitive tasks measuring components of executive function, (i.e., planning, inhibition, and switching), and a …
Evaluation Of Low-Cost Low Impact Development Practices In Southwest Florida For The Control Of Urban Runoff, Laura Kathren Rankin
Evaluation Of Low-Cost Low Impact Development Practices In Southwest Florida For The Control Of Urban Runoff, Laura Kathren Rankin
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Stormwater management is required due to development and alteration of the natural environment. It is heavily regulated in Florida and at the national level. Over the last two decades, Low Impact Development (LID) has been promoted as a sustainable and environmentally friendly method of controlling urban runoff. Case studies, provided in Chapter 2, show that LIDs can restore watershed hydrology by balancing the water budget. The difference in runoff between pre-development and post-development appears to increase with soil perviousness. However, the potential for mitigating the impacts of urbanization through runoff reduction is also greater for pervious, sandy soils that dominate …

Linking Insomnia And Suicide Ideation: The Role Of Socio-Cognitive Mechanisms In Suicide Risk, Melanie Lauren Bozzay
Linking Insomnia And Suicide Ideation: The Role Of Socio-Cognitive Mechanisms In Suicide Risk, Melanie Lauren Bozzay
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Despite what is known about predictors of suicide risk and consequences of insomnia, research has yet to delineate mechanisms that may explain the known relationship between insomnia symptoms and suicide risk. There is some disagreement in the literature regarding whether this relationship could be primarily explained by recent depressive symptoms, or whether there may be other explanatory factors related to sleep deficits. The present study addressed this contention in the literature by examining 1) whether socio-cognitive variables (e.g. fatigue, appraised social problem-solving ability, and hopelessness) explained this insomnia-ideation relationship, and 2) whether these variables contributed some explanatory variance in suicide …
Parent Predictors Of Social-Emotional Strengths In Kindergartners, Kayla Nicole Larosa
Parent Predictors Of Social-Emotional Strengths In Kindergartners, Kayla Nicole Larosa
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Strengths-based assessment is providing an alternative to the typical way that psychologists approach mental health in the literature. Social-emotional strengths are multidimensional, positive indicators of mental health that include Social Competence, Self-Regulation, Empathy, and Responsibility. Limited research has been conducted to examine the potential connection between parental involvement in children’s education, specifically in the areas of supporting a child’s learning at home, parental involvement within educational settings, and parenting practices (discipline, Monitoring, use of Praise and Incentives) in connection with social-emotional strengths. With an emphasis on prevention of mental health problems, parents are an important and potentially untapped resource for …

This dissertation research explored mechanisms of human milk (HM) expulsion by describing the effects of skin to skin contact (SSC) on maternal basal oxytocin (OT) secretion among 20 premature mothers with hospitalized premature infants. This one-group, repeated measures design consisted of: 1) daily SSC with covariant data via self-report diary and 2) maternal salivary OT with and without SSC at 4 time points were collected over a 7 day time frame. Results indicate that mean levels of basal OT increase over time (M 234 pg/ml, SD 108 pg/ml time point 1; M 257 pg/ml, SD 125 pg/ml time point 3). …
Adolescent Females With High-Functioning Asd: Self And Mothers’ Perspectives Of Their School And Social Experiences, Lindsey Land
Adolescent Females With High-Functioning Asd: Self And Mothers’ Perspectives Of Their School And Social Experiences, Lindsey Land
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Although the prevalence of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is currently 1 in 68 (Centers for Disease Control, 2015) and research in this area is growing, high-functioning individuals on the spectrum are often overlooked. This is because of their relatively milder symptoms. The recent collapse of Asperger Syndrome (AS) with autism in the most recent version of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM-5; APA, 2013) also has obscured the differences that may exist between those with higher vs. lower levels of functioning. Among youth with High-Functioning Autism Spectrum Disorder (HFASD), girls are a particularly understudied and potentially vulnerable group. Previous research …

Emergent Insect And Neotropical Migratory Bird Interactions And Responses To Habitat, Hydrology, And Progressive Urbanization In The Tampa Bay Region, Nathaniel Lee Goddard
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The growing human population threatens the many of the earth’s biological systems. In the last 600 years extinction rates risen from 1 extinction per million species per year (E/MSY) in the 1400’s to 50 E/MSY today. During this time period 1.5% of all known birds have gone extinct, because they could not adapt quickly enough to human mediated changes. The goal of this dissertation was to determine how urbanization and anthropogenic services needed to support urban areas impact cypress dome wetland aquatic insect and migratory bird populations that depend on them. In Central Florida cypress dome hydroperiods are driven by …

Implementation Of Medicaid Managed Long-Term Services And Supports For Adults With Intellectual And/Or Developmental Disabilities: A State’S Experience, Heather Jeanne Williamson
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Background: Individuals with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities (IDD) are experiencing longer life expectancies with the majority requiring the ongoing support of family caregivers into adulthood. Medicaid is the primary funding source for supports and services for adults with IDD. Growing Medicaid expenditures and goals to improve quality of care are driving more states to move their Medicaid fee-for-service programs into a managed care model. The stated goals of Medicaid managed long-term services and supports (MLTSS) are to improve care coordination and access to care while controlling costs, but the evidence regarding these outcomes is limited and mixed. Given the level …
Improving Elementary Teachers’ Well-Being Through A Strengths-Based Intervention: A Multiple Baseline Single-Case Design, Mollie Marie Mccullough
Improving Elementary Teachers’ Well-Being Through A Strengths-Based Intervention: A Multiple Baseline Single-Case Design, Mollie Marie Mccullough
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Teaching is considered to be one of the most highly demanding professions, and one that is associated with high levels of stress and sometimes deleterious outcomes. Although research demonstrates that burnout and attrition are often associated with specific characteristics of the occupation (e.g., challenging workload, standardized testing, merit-based salary) minimal research focuses on how to better support teachers’ well-being. The field of positive psychology affords a new perspective in how to obtain quality mental health without solely focusing on psychopathology within a deficits-based approach. This includes the implementation of interventions (i.e., positive psychology interventions [PPI]) that target constructs of well-being …
Applying Voronoi Tessellations As A Non-Orthogonal Grid Methodology To Inform Public-Private Mix Efforts In Nigeria: An Examination Of The Distribution Of Private Healthcare Providers In Six States And The Covariates Underlying Their Utilization, Trinadh Dontamsetti
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
TB care and prevention is led by the public sector, but many TB symptomatics first seek care in the private sector, highlighting the importance of engaging these facilities. This report examines basic TB epidemiology (such as the gap in case finding that could be addressed in part via private sector activities), health-seeking behaviors (HSB) and diagnostic delays, the size of the private sector, activities of professional societies, and financing. It examines the potential utility of integrating Voronoi tessellations as a GIS-based method for informing and improving Public-Private Mix (PPM) efforts throughout six states in Nigeria. Further, it explores a potential …
The Cultivation Of Eating Disorders Through Instagram, Kendall O'Brien
The Cultivation Of Eating Disorders Through Instagram, Kendall O'Brien
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
A profusion of research has been dedicated to the effects of new media on body image. In an attempt to explain the inflation of eating disorders, several researchers have turned to the cultivation theory, postulating that increased interaction with these medias will lead to internalizations of the messages they disseminate. The over presence of extremely thin models and actresses can create a new reality for media users, who begin to equate thinness with beauty, power, femininity and happiness. While an abundance of research has delved into the impact of this thin ideal through television and magazines, the Internet as a …

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the use of auditory feedback for teaching individuals with intellectual disabilities the “Mississippi Cha Cha Slide.” Participants consisted of six males ages 35 to 61. During baseline, line dance skills were low for all participants. During the auditory feedback intervention, the trainer used a clicker to reinforce dance steps and forward chaining to chain movements into a sequence. Once auditory feedback was implemented, line dance skills increased substantially for all participants. Generalization assessments for four of the participants resulted in performance levels similar to baseline and demonstrate the need for future training …
Online Game Advertising And Chinese College Students: Attitudes, First- And Third-Person Effects, Yan Tang
Online Game Advertising And Chinese College Students: Attitudes, First- And Third-Person Effects, Yan Tang
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study is to explore the relationships among Chinese college students’ attitudes toward online games and online game advertising, their perceived influence of online game advertising on themselves and others, and their attitude toward restrictions on online game advertising. The growing popularity of online games and the frequent use of advertising in promoting online gaming activities make it necessary to examine empirically the relationships among these variables. Based on a survey among 518 Chinese college students, the study found support for the mediating role of the third-person effect. It also found evidence for the first-person effect through …
The Influence Of Relationship Status On Hpv Vaccine Decision-Making Among Young Adult Women, Erika L. Thompson
The Influence Of Relationship Status On Hpv Vaccine Decision-Making Among Young Adult Women, Erika L. Thompson
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Background: The HPV vaccine is a primary prevention method available to reduce the burden of HPV-related cancers and genital warts. The vaccine is currently approved for catch-up vaccination among women 18 to 26 years of age. Despite this recommendation, the rate of vaccine uptake among this group is considerably low (~34% uptake). One demographic characteristic that is consistently reported as a risk factor for non-vaccination is relationship status, specifically married or monogamous relationships. While the epidemiological data confirm this association, there is a lack of understanding how this risk factor operates. By elucidating the mechanism for this risk factor, …
Prediction Of The Optimum Binder Content Of Open-Graded Friction Course Mixtures Using Digital Image Processing, Yolibeth Mejias De Pernia
Prediction Of The Optimum Binder Content Of Open-Graded Friction Course Mixtures Using Digital Image Processing, Yolibeth Mejias De Pernia
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) has been using Open Graded Friction Course (OGFC) mixture to improve skid resistance of asphalt pavements under wet weather. The OGFC mixture design strongly depends on the Optimum Binder Content (OBC) which represents if the mixture has sufficient bonding between the aggregate and asphalt binder. At present, the FDOT designs OGFC mixtures using a pie plate visual draindown method (FM 5-588). In this method, the OBC is determined based on visual inspection of the asphalt binder draindown (ABD) configuration of three OGFC samples placed on pie plates with pre-determined trial asphalt binder contents (AC). The …
