The Power Of Class Consciousness: An Investigation Of Permeability Beliefs, Dehumanization, And Evaluations Of The Poor, Kirsten J. Lee
The Power Of Class Consciousness: An Investigation Of Permeability Beliefs, Dehumanization, And Evaluations Of The Poor, Kirsten J. Lee
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Class consciousness, a theoretical construct from the Marxist tradition, promotes an understanding of class dynamics as a structural phenomenon. I hypothesized that class consciousness would moderate animalistic dehumanization of the poor. A total of 435 participants took an online survey containing self-report questionnaires. While a priori hypotheses related to animalistic dehumanization were not supported, exploratory analyses revealed that permeability beliefs—the degree to which an individual sees class boundaries as impermeable—moderate emotional tone when discussing the rich and the poor. Mirroring Marx’s theorizing, those with class consciousness spoke more positively of the poor and less favorably of the rich than their …
Head Start Teachers' Contemplative Journeys With Stress, Self-Awareness, And Interactions: A Narrative Inquiry, Candice L. Mckinnon
Head Start Teachers' Contemplative Journeys With Stress, Self-Awareness, And Interactions: A Narrative Inquiry, Candice L. Mckinnon
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Early childhood teachers play a significant role in creating joyful, positive classroom environments for young children. Yet, occupational factors in early childhood settings create teaching stress, which can negatively affect the well-being of teachers and their interactions with children. Contemplative practices (CPs), such as mindfulness, meditation, and yoga, have been proven to decrease stress, increase self-awareness, and cultivate positive relationships with one’s self and others. The purpose of this study was to explore the storied lives of participants through a narrative inquiry to understand how the life experiences of Head Start teachers of color outside of school contexts led them …
Evaluating The Prevent-Teach-Reinforce Secondary (Ptr-Sec) Model For Middle School Students With Disabilities Requiring Individualized Behavior Supports, Paris N. Thie
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Prevent-Teach-Reinforce (PTR) is a manualized, team-based, function-based intervention model designed to prevent problem behavior from occurring (prevent), teach functional replacement behaviors or skills (teach), and promote the replacement and other desired behaviors (reinforce). The current study extends the literature on the PTR intervention model by further evaluating the PTR model for middle school students in a public middle school setting. In particular, the PTR Secondary (PTR-SEC) model was evaluated with three students with emotional and behavioral disorders (EBD) and other disabilities, involving their classroom teachers. A multiple baseline design across participants was used to evaluate the behavioral outcomes of the …
Cues And Identity: Assessing Substance Use Cues, Life Experience, And Context, Katelynn Carlsen
Cues And Identity: Assessing Substance Use Cues, Life Experience, And Context, Katelynn Carlsen
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This project employs Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA) methods alongside semi-structured interviews to examine substance use cues, or “triggers”, in the everyday context. This includes repeated assessment of participants’ behaviors and thoughts over time. EMA allows researchers to sample phenomena the moment they occur within the context. These methods are most used in psychology and clinical science. Current research on substance use relies on lab-based assessments to understand cues and their relationship to consumption (Carter and Tiffany 1999, Conklin and Tiffany 2003, Witteman et al. 2015). This analysis uses data collected by the Cues in the Everyday (CITED) Team. The CITED …
A Comparison Of Video Feedback And Video Self-Evaluation To Improve Tap Skills, Ellie Warmund
A Comparison Of Video Feedback And Video Self-Evaluation To Improve Tap Skills, Ellie Warmund
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Within the research on behavioral interventions in sports, researchers have evaluated various feedback-based interventions to enhance performance of skills. Research has demonstrated the effectiveness of video feedback (VF) to improve performance across a variety of sports. Video self-evaluation (VSE), though less studied, is another feedback-based intervention that has been proven to improve sports skills. By using a multiple baseline across participants with an embedded alternating treatments design, this study compared VF to VSE to improve the performance of tap skills. We evaluated three skills for each dancer; one skill received VF, one received VSE, and one did not receive an …
Examining The Effectiveness And Acceptability Of A Single-Session Problem-Solving Teleconsultation Package With Caregivers, Tiara J. Rowell
Examining The Effectiveness And Acceptability Of A Single-Session Problem-Solving Teleconsultation Package With Caregivers, Tiara J. Rowell
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This study implemented a single case concurrent multiple baseline design to examine the effects of a single-session problem-solving teleconsultation package for behavioral caregiver training. This study sought to address a gap in the Problem-Solving Consultation (PSC) literature regarding the treatment of children’s challenging behaviors. Participants included three caregivers who received a single-session PSC through teleconsultation. The session focused on creating a Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP) in order to address their child’s challenging behaviors. The BIP was developed based on baseline data, questionnaires, and emails exchanged between the consultant and the three caregivers. Results indicated that two of the three caregivers …
Disruptions In The Experiences Of First-Time Military Family Members, Ana C. Vidal
Disruptions In The Experiences Of First-Time Military Family Members, Ana C. Vidal
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Military service members and their families encounter many obstacles throughout their time in the military (as well as before enlistment/commission and after service), ranging from those unique to the military community to those common within civilian families. Although how military families deal with these challenges/stressors and how to better support these families has been a salient research area, there is still room for expansion of knowledge. This study argues for expanding who is included in the definition of a “military family” to include a service member’s parents/parental figures and siblings, as well as enlarging the period of interest in military …
Learning And Using Positive Psychology As An Intervention For Clients: Examining Changes In Mental Health Clinician’S Complete Mental Health, Frances Coolman
Learning And Using Positive Psychology As An Intervention For Clients: Examining Changes In Mental Health Clinician’S Complete Mental Health, Frances Coolman
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Traditionally, mental health was viewed as the absence of illness or disorders, but over time it has increasingly become viewed as also holding the presence of positive factors (Keyes, 2003; Ryff & Singer, 1998; Suldo & Shaffer, 2008). The switch from only focusing on negative factors to incorporating positive factors as well brought more traction to the growing field of positive psychology, defined as “the scientific study of positive experiences and positive individual traits, and the institutions that facilitate their development” (Duckworth, Steen, & Seligman, 2005, p. 630). Inclusion of both positive indicators of wellness combined with negative indicators of …
Patrol Car Swab Sampling For Biological Agents, Haylie Corcho
Patrol Car Swab Sampling For Biological Agents, Haylie Corcho
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Law enforcement personnel have a variety of responsibilities and subsequently, a variety of different exposures. Biological agents are common in the environment and therefore, these exposures are a concern in the profession. There is a gap in research into biological agent exposures in this profession, particularly how it relates to surface contamination and within the officers’ vehicles. There is also a lack of standardized decontamination procedures for patrol vehicles, allowing for the potential persistence of these agents. The purpose of this study is to understand which biological agents are most common in patrol cars, which areas within the vehicles have …
Aligning Clinical Productivity Of Cancer Care Providers: A Simulation-Based Approach, Maile Sinclair-Baxter
Aligning Clinical Productivity Of Cancer Care Providers: A Simulation-Based Approach, Maile Sinclair-Baxter
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The growing number of cancer patients over the years has presented many challenges and opportunities for improvement in the healthcare system. These challenges and opportunities have demonstrated the need for a tool that can enhance the clinical productivity of healthcare providers, ultimately impacting patients’ overall experience. We studied the clinical Full Time Equivalency (cFTE) for providers at a cancer research center. cFTE is the percentage of time allocated for clinical work. In this cancer research center, the clinical work of each provider is supposed to match a targeted cFTE. The cancer research center’s concern was that the provider’s clinical productivity …
Using Brain Break® In The Classroom To Increase On-Task Behavior And Decrease Disruptive Behaviors Of Students, Michaela C. Elza
Using Brain Break® In The Classroom To Increase On-Task Behavior And Decrease Disruptive Behaviors Of Students, Michaela C. Elza
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Off-task and disruptive behavior are one of the greatest causes to loss of instructional time in the classroom. Teachers spend time addressing student challenging behaviors which consequently cuts time from their academic instruction. Antecedent exercise programs, such as Brain Breaks®, provide teachers with short physical activity videos that provide students a movement break between long periods of academics without the need for expensive equipment. This study evaluated the effects of Brain Breaks® videos to increase students’ on-task and decrease disruptive behaviors in the classroom. Three participants were included in this study, Jordan a 6-year-old male, Andrew an 8-year-old male, and …
Maturing Out Of Crime: A Test Of The Integrated Maturation Theory Of Desistance, Kelly E. Kortright
Maturing Out Of Crime: A Test Of The Integrated Maturation Theory Of Desistance, Kelly E. Kortright
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation partially tested a newer integrated theory, the Integrated Maturation Theory (IMT) of desistance. IMT argues that as maturation increases across five maturation domains (social role, civic, identity, psychosocial, and neurocognitive) the likelihood of offending decreases. Using a sample of serious justice-involved juveniles spanning ages 14-24 from the Pathways to Desistance Study, the individual and simultaneous maturation domain development of the social role, civic, identity, and psychosocial maturation domains, were explored for heterogeneity. Using a group-based trajectory modeling approach, including multi-trajectory modeling, this study advanced the understanding of maturation development by identifying sub-groups following declining trajectories of maturation and …
Evaluating The Use Of Behavioral Skills Training And Tactile Prompts To Increase Positive Staff Interactions In Residential Care, Kaleigh R. Cernosek
Evaluating The Use Of Behavioral Skills Training And Tactile Prompts To Increase Positive Staff Interactions In Residential Care, Kaleigh R. Cernosek
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Youth in residential care are often victims of maltreatment and are more likely to be revictimized. Residential facilities tend to be restrictive and punitive based, often implementing restraints as an intervention. Previous research has shown that a positive living climate is essential for increasing quality of life and meeting treatment goals. Building rapport between staff and youth can help promote a positive living climate and positively impact youth behavior. Behavior-specific praise (BSP) has been evaluated in school settings to increase student engagement and compliance. However, there has been limited research on the effects of increasing BSP in residential facilities. Therefore, …
Teacher-Implemented Accumulated And Distributed Schedules In The Classroom Setting, Jessica S. Benevides
Teacher-Implemented Accumulated And Distributed Schedules In The Classroom Setting, Jessica S. Benevides
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Emotional behavior disorders (EBDs) are becoming increasingly more common in schools (Forness et al., 2012). Challenging behavior can negatively impact a teacher’s implementation of classroom management strategies which can be detrimental to student outcomes (Garwood et al., 2017; Gilmour et al., 2022) and increase the risk for teacher burnout (Fernet et al., 2012). Evidence-based strategies such as differential reinforcement have been shown to be effective at reducing challenging behavior (Boniecki & Moore, 2003; Petscher et al., 2009). Moreover, accumulated and distributed reinforcer arrangements using tokens have been shown to both reduce challenging behavior and increase task engagement (Chen et al., …
Incidence Of Reportable Exertional Heat Illness During Deepwater Horizon Cleanup, Fisher R. Morris
Incidence Of Reportable Exertional Heat Illness During Deepwater Horizon Cleanup, Fisher R. Morris
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this research was to explore the relationship between incidence of recordable exertional heat illness (EHI) and daily high wet bulb globe temperature (WBGTmax) or daily high Heat Index (HImax). Additionally, the effect of the previous day’s exposure to heat stress was investigated. Illness and injury records were collected during the Deepwater Horizon oil spill response. All OSHA recordable EHI cases were extracted for study. The highest estimated WBGT and HI on the day of incident were compared to the prior day. The overall incidence of recordable EHIs was 0.74 cases/100 FTE and the incidence for exposures ≥ …
“She’S On Her Way Up”: A Case Study Of Mercy Otis Warren And The Gendered Politics Of Commemoration, Sara Ann White
“She’S On Her Way Up”: A Case Study Of Mercy Otis Warren And The Gendered Politics Of Commemoration, Sara Ann White
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In 2001, a statue of eighteenth-century Bill of Rights advocate Mercy Otis Warren was erected on the Barnstable County Superior Courthouse lawn in Barnstable, Massachusetts. The story of the statue’s eventual placement is a fascinating case study of how the gendered politics of commemoration can play out over time in local communities. The saga of Warren’s commemoration is inextricably bound up with the history of efforts to commemorate Warren’s brother, James Otis Jr., and eventual arguments that Warren’s work deserved recognition in its own right. We first see gendered politics at play as Warren’s real accomplishments were consistently overshadowed by …
Skinny And Curvy And Muscular, Oh My! Examining Co-Occurring Appearance Ideals And Associated Disordered Eating In College Women, Laura E. Boyajian
Skinny And Curvy And Muscular, Oh My! Examining Co-Occurring Appearance Ideals And Associated Disordered Eating In College Women, Laura E. Boyajian
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Research examining appearance ideal internalization has primarily focused on the thin ideal, neglecting the growing importance of alternative appearance ideals (e.g., curvy, muscular). Qualitatively, women report that these ideals are not internalized in isolation, but instead, are internalized simultaneously. Importantly, the simultaneous internalization of appearance ideals may enhance the negative effects of appearance ideal internalization. The current study tested whether simultaneously internalizing diverse appearance ideals (i.e., thin, curvy, muscular) was associated with increased body dissatisfaction and disordered eating behaviors in a predominantly White (Study 1; N= 260) and racially/ethnically diverse (Study 2; N=264) samples of college-aged women. Participants reported the …
From Guns To Intimate Partner Violence: The Impact Of Power And Control, Meaghan E. Brown
From Guns To Intimate Partner Violence: The Impact Of Power And Control, Meaghan E. Brown
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Gun violence and intimate partner violence are pervasive public health concerns across the globe. Notably, previous literature has shown a positive relationship between gun ownership and intimate partner violence (IPV), even when a gun is not used during acts of IPV. Despite this established link, few studies to date have explored psychological mechanisms, especially feelings of and desire for power, that could explain this relationship among young men. Given that college students remain one of the most at-risk groups for both victimization and perpetration of IPV, examining the relationship between actual or intended gun ownership and IPV could close vital …
Trajectories Of Well-Being: Results From The Americans’ Changing Lives Study, Cassondra M. Lyman
Trajectories Of Well-Being: Results From The Americans’ Changing Lives Study, Cassondra M. Lyman
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
There is considerable interest in elucidating the dynamics of well-being over long periods of time, including how well-being dynamics are influenced by depression. The Americans' Changing Lives (ACL) study has followed the health and well-being of a nationally representative sample of adults in the United States for 25 years (N1986 = 3,617; N1989 = 2,867; N1994 = 2,562; N2002 = 1,787, N2012 = 1,427). Leveraging data from the ACL study, the present investigation employed growth mixture models to identify unobserved subpopulations (i.e., latent classes) typified by change in well-being over time. Three predominant trajectories for well-being were identified: relative stability …
An Assessment Of A Haptic-Based Ergonomic Intervention At An Aerospace Manufacturing Facility, Chase Mcdonald
An Assessment Of A Haptic-Based Ergonomic Intervention At An Aerospace Manufacturing Facility, Chase Mcdonald
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this thesis was to evaluate the effectiveness and sustainability of a haptic-based intervention designed to reduce hand motions and, consequently, the risk of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) among operators in a manufacturing facility. The intervention involved using ergonomic gloves equipped with haptic feedback, intended to encourage proper hand motion and reduce unnecessary movements.
Over a six-month period, data was collected from operators wearing the haptic gloves, focusing on two key metrics: Duty Cycle and Motion Rate. These metrics were chosen to normalize the data, accounting for the variability in duration for each individual operator who wore the device. …
Improving Academic Engagement And Task Completion Using Antecedent Physical Exercise In An Elementary School Classroom, Grace N. Maxwell
Improving Academic Engagement And Task Completion Using Antecedent Physical Exercise In An Elementary School Classroom, Grace N. Maxwell
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This study investigated the effectiveness of antecedent physical activity interventions in enhancing academic engagement and task completion among first-grade students displaying off-task behaviors. The research involved three student participants from a first grade general education classroom. An ABAB reversal design was used to assess the impact of the intervention. The intervention, implemented by the classroom teacher, consisted of short, structured physical activities conducted before targeted academic periods. Results revealed significant improvements in both academic engagement and task completion following the implementation of the physical activity interventions. The findings suggest that incorporating brief physical activities into daily classroom routines can lead …

A Cca Analysis Of How Media Cover Military Policies Regarding Trans Service Members And Veterans: Implications For Policy, Healthcare, And Wellbeing, Jonathan T. Baker
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The military is the leading employer of transgender and gender diverse (trans) people in the United States, and trans people are twice as likely to serve in the U.S. Military compared to the national average. This dissertation analyzes newspaper coverage of transgender service members and veterans between the end of President Obama’s administration and the early months of President Biden’s administration. Guided by the Culture-Centered Approach (CCA) this dissertation focused on cross-paradigmatic questions regarding the role of voice (e.g., quoting or paraphrasing various sources) in this coverage. Specifically, I assessed (a) which groups of people are being cited most often, …
The Relationship Between Rejection Sensitivity And Higher Order Cognitive Functions, Rachel Gaynor
The Relationship Between Rejection Sensitivity And Higher Order Cognitive Functions, Rachel Gaynor
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Rejection sensitivity indexes individual differences in the expectation of, reaction to, and interpretation of possible rejection. Research on mechanisms underlying these individual differences have identified a reduction in top-down emotion regulatory processes in those exhibiting heightened rejection sensitivity. Most of these studies utilize rejection-specific affective stimuli. This study examined the relationship between rejection sensitivity score, calculated from the 18-question RSQ, and the recruitment of higher level inhibition resources, as indexed by the conflict N2, on three novel Flanker tasks. In order to further examine previously identified patterns in affective inhibition across differing levels of rejection sensitivity, and to determine whether …
Peritraumatic Distress And Dissociation In People With And Without Disabilities Utilizing Emergency Departments, Sydney C. Hart
Peritraumatic Distress And Dissociation In People With And Without Disabilities Utilizing Emergency Departments, Sydney C. Hart
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
To date the literature on peritraumatic distress and peritraumatic dissociation in individuals receiving emergency medical treatment has not examined people with disabilities or chronic health conditions as a specified population, despite these populations’ disproportional utilization of medical facilities and additional stressors faced in those environments. Thus, this study assessed and compared the prevalence and averages on the Peritraumatic Distress Inventory (PDI) and Peritraumatic Dissociative Experiences Questionnaire (PDEQ) in people with and without disabilities and/or chronic health conditions after Emergency Department (ED) visits. A sample of 138 participants 18 years of age or older, of which 109 reported disabilities and/or chronic …
An Evaluation Of Reinforcement Thinning Using Deposit Contracts To Increase Physical Activity, Madeline N. Mccullen
An Evaluation Of Reinforcement Thinning Using Deposit Contracts To Increase Physical Activity, Madeline N. Mccullen
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Due to the health risks associated with a sedentary lifestyle, researchers have used behavioral interventions such as contingency management and deposit contracts to increase physical activity. Although these interventions have been effective, researchers have described the lack of maintenance assessments of the target behavior. One way to address the maintenance of behavior, such as physical activity, is with reinforcement thinning. The current study evaluated the effects of self-tailored deposit contracts and reinforcement thinning on daily step count with sedentary adults using a nonconcurrent multiple baseline across participants design. Researchers and participants designed a self-tailored deposit contract by identifying a step …
Empirically Defining Healthy And Maladaptive Exercise: A Nomological Network Approach, Cody B. Staples
Empirically Defining Healthy And Maladaptive Exercise: A Nomological Network Approach, Cody B. Staples
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Exercise is generally considered to be healthy and adaptive; however, for some individuals, engagement in exercise is maladaptive and can damage both physical and mental health. Currently, research regarding healthy and maladaptive exercise is siloed, and factors that may result in exercise being maladaptive are unclear. This gap in the research is fueled by the incomplete definitions of what constitutes “healthy” as compared to “maladaptive” exercise behavior. To address this gap, the current study aimed to develop empirical definitions of healthy and maladaptive exercise using a nomological network approach. Theoretically and empirically supported facets of exercise (e.g., frequency, motivation) were …
Personality Pathology As A Self-Regulating Dynamical System, Haya Fatimah
Personality Pathology As A Self-Regulating Dynamical System, Haya Fatimah
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
With mounting evidence that personality is both stable and variable, personality scientists have called for comprehensive approaches that integrate stability and dynamics. Dynamical systems theory offers concepts and tools to systematically integrate the stable and dynamic components of personality while identifying the relationship between these components. This study extends the dynamical systems approach to personality pathology and investigates how pathological personality states vary in a patterned manner in relation to their equilibria or attractors, as opposed to random noise. Furthermore, I test if these patterned dynamics may describe important individual differences and predict behavioral outcomes. Using daily data pertaining to …
Sars-Cov-2 Neurotropism: Understanding Effects At The Blood-Brain Barrier And Hematogenous Neuroinvasiveness, Taylor E. Martinez
Sars-Cov-2 Neurotropism: Understanding Effects At The Blood-Brain Barrier And Hematogenous Neuroinvasiveness, Taylor E. Martinez
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), the virus responsible for COVID-19, has provisional counts of over 110 million documented cases and 1.218 million deaths (as of February 2024) in the United States since January 2020. SARS-CoV-2 is an airborne respiratory virus that primarily infects the lungs via the ACE2 receptor but has well-documented secondary target organs including the kidneys, the gastrointestinal tract, the heart, and the skin. SARS-CoV-2 also infects the brain, but the hematogenous route of viral entry to brain is still not fully characterized. Understanding how SARS-CoV-2 traverses the blood-brain barrier (BBB) as well as how it …
The Polyaneuploid Cancer Cell State And Therapeutic Resistance: Eco-Evolutionary Dynamics In Structured Populations, Anuraag Bukkuri
The Polyaneuploid Cancer Cell State And Therapeutic Resistance: Eco-Evolutionary Dynamics In Structured Populations, Anuraag Bukkuri
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In this dissertation, I develop and apply eco-evolutionary modeling techniques to understand how the polyaneuploid cancer cell (PACC) state, entered when aneuploid cells exit the cell cycle after S phase and undergo a whole genome duplication, contributes to therapeutic resistance. Since resistance remains one of the primary causes of treatment failure in cancer patients, it is critical to understand how such demographic state transitions allow for acclimatization of cancer cells to therapeutic stressors and how they interact with evolutionary processes to promote irreversible resistance.
In Chapters Two and Three, I lay the foundation for this work. In Chapter Two, I …
Internalized Binegativity, Alcohol Consumption, And Expectancies Following An Experience Of Binegativity: An Experimental Study, Alexander P. Rivera
Internalized Binegativity, Alcohol Consumption, And Expectancies Following An Experience Of Binegativity: An Experimental Study, Alexander P. Rivera
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Individuals who identify as bisexual have repeatedly been found to consume alcohol at higherrates than individuals who identify as heterosexual or homosexual and are at greater risk for developing AUD. Per the Minority Stress Model, this heightened risk for bisexuals’ poor alcohol outcomes may be attributed to experiences of bisexual-specific stressors (i.e., experienced binegativity) and beliefs about their own bisexual identity., which have previously been associated with increased alcohol use. To date, however, no studies have examined if experiences of binegativity are associated with changes in internalized binegativity and alcohol outcomes in an experimental design. The current study aimed to …
