Perceptions Of Quality Of Life, Peer Relationships, And Health Literacy In Adolescents With Phenylketonuria (Pku), Katherine L. Wesley
Perceptions Of Quality Of Life, Peer Relationships, And Health Literacy In Adolescents With Phenylketonuria (Pku), Katherine L. Wesley
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Phenylketonuria (PKU) is a rare inborn error of metabolism that can be managed through lifelong treatment adherence to a restricted diet and supplemental medical formula (Vockley et al., 2014). Untreated PKU can result in severe intellectual disability, anxiety, depression, executive functioning deficits, and seizures (Cappelletti et al., 2013; Moyle et al., 2007). Even individuals who are continuously treated for PKU can experience high rates of anxiety and depression, executive functioning deficits, social difficulties, and lower full-scale IQ scores than their siblings and parents (Bosch et al., 2015; Manti et al., 2016; Waisbren et al., 2007). Additionally, adolescents are at risk …

A Latent Profile Analysis Of Benefactor And Beneficiary Organizational Citizenship Behaviors Toward Individuals, Seulki Jang
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Although organizational citizenship behaviors toward individuals (OCB-I) have been studied over decades, the beneficiary side of OCB-I has been understudied. The co-existing and interactive possibility of benefactor OCB-I and beneficiary OCB-I within individuals has been ignored. Therefore, this research adopted a person-centered approach and examined different profiles of benefactor OCB-I and beneficiary OCB-I on the basis of Grant’s (2013) theory. Results from Study 1 data (cross-sectional data) and Study 2 data (multiple waves of data) revealed the three profile groups: vigorous (high benefactor OCB-I and high beneficiary OCB-I), moderate (moderate benefactor OCB-I and moderate beneficiary OCB-I), and passive OCB-I groups …

A Behavioral Analysis Of Households Using Reclaimed Water In Irrigation: Case Of Pinellas County, Florida, Natalie Kuraya-Ziyadeh
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In order to tend to the world’s dwindling freshwater supplies, sustainable alternative methods need to be integrated in order to keep up with the world’s increasing demand. Reclaimed water (RW) is one of the sustainable methods adopted by some Floridian cities such as Tampa, Tallahassee, and St. Pete that provide an alternative water source for non-potable uses. However, despite this alleviating effect RW has on freshwater supplies, it is crucial to recognize the potential harm it poses on neighboring waterbodies due to the residual contaminants it still contains, including Nitrogen (N) and Phosphorous (P). As such, studying residents’ knowledge and …
Do All “Good Mothers” Breastfeed? How African American Mothers’ Values And Experiences Of Early Motherhood Influence Their Infant Feeding Choices, Airia S. Papadopoulos
Do All “Good Mothers” Breastfeed? How African American Mothers’ Values And Experiences Of Early Motherhood Influence Their Infant Feeding Choices, Airia S. Papadopoulos
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The food an infant is fed can reflect many things: a source of nutrition, the social and cultural circumstances into which an infant is born, or even a family’s beliefs about the body and breast milk as a source of nutrition. Exclusive breastfeeding, currently the gold standard for infant feeding in the United States (US), is often identified as an expectation in discourses on being a “good mother.” African American mothers in particular are the least likely group in the US to breastfeed in any capacity and many efforts are underway to increase the breastfeeding rates of this population.

Egos Gone Wild: Threat Detection And The Domains Indicative Of Toxic Leadership, Matthew S. Arbogast
Egos Gone Wild: Threat Detection And The Domains Indicative Of Toxic Leadership, Matthew S. Arbogast
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Toxic leaders are a serious problem, but shockingly, there is no standard detection tool that is both efficient and accurate. Compounding the problem are the various definitions and descriptions used to operationalize toxic leadership. This research sought to align the literature, offer a concise definition, and assess the domains indicative of toxic leadership through two conceptually compatible studies. Study 1 involved development of a toxic leader threat detection scale. Results using a variable-centered approach indicated that follower perceptions (n = 357) of leader empathy (4-item scale; α = .93) and the need for achievement recognition (4-item scale; α = .83) …
Rumination And Worry: Factor Structure And Predictive Utility, Andrew Mark Kiselica
Rumination And Worry: Factor Structure And Predictive Utility, Andrew Mark Kiselica
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Criticism of discrete classification systems for mental disorders has led to a focus on identification of mechanisms that cut across symptom clusters, known as transdiagnostic factors. One such proposed factor is negative repetitive thought (NRT), or a perseverative, often uncontrollable, focus on negative information, experiences, or expectations. Worry and rumination are two major constructs thought to compose NRT. No confirmatory factor analyses have investigated whether worry and rumination might compose a general NRT factor, discrete factors, or some combination of the two. The first purpose of the current study was to use confirmatory factor analyses to uncover whether worry and …
Physical And Social Systems Resilience Assessment And Optimization, Daniel Romero Rodriguez
Physical And Social Systems Resilience Assessment And Optimization, Daniel Romero Rodriguez
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Resilience has been measured using qualitative and quantitative metrics in engineering, economics, psychology, business, ecology, among others. This dissertation proposes a resilience metric that explicitly incorporates the intensity of the disruptive event to provide a more accurate estimation of system resilience. A comparative analysis between the proposed metric and average performance resilience metrics for linear and nonlinear loss and recovery functions suggests that the new metric enables a more objective assessment of resilience for disruptions with different intensities. Moreover, the proposed metric is independent of a control time parameter. This provides a more consistent resilience estimation for a given system and …

Initial Beam Access Schemes For Millimeter Wave Cellular Networks, Mohammed Jasim
Initial Beam Access Schemes For Millimeter Wave Cellular Networks, Mohammed Jasim
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Millimeter wave technologies present an appealing solution for increasing data throughputs as they provide abundant contiguous channel bandwidths as compared to conventional microwave networks. However, millimeter wave technologies suffer from severe propagation limitations and channel impairments such as atmospheric attenuation and absorption, path and penetration losses, and blockage sensitivity. Therefore, phased arrays and beamforming technologies are necessary to compensate for the degraded signal levels due to the aforementioned factors. Namely, base stations and mobile stations utilize directional transmission in the control- and data- plane for an enhanced channel capacity, which results in initial access challenges due to the absence of …
Targeting The Hsp90/Aha1 Complex For The Treatment Of Tauopathies, Lindsey Brooke Shelton
Targeting The Hsp90/Aha1 Complex For The Treatment Of Tauopathies, Lindsey Brooke Shelton
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The microtubule associated protein, tau, is involved in regulating microtubule stability and axonal transport. When tau becomes hyperphosphorylated it can disassociate from the microtubules and start to aggregate. These tau aggregates are the hallmarks of many diseases known as tauopathies. The heat shock protein 90 kDa (Hsp90) chaperone network is highly involved in modulating client proteins, including tau. However, during aging and disease the Hsp90 chaperone network becomes highly imbalanced with some Hsp90/co-chaperone complexes increasing, while others are repressed. This imbalance in Hsp90/co-chaperone complexes could result in a worsening of tau pathology in Alzheimer’s disease.
Hsp90 inhibition has been of …

Seeing Trauma: The Known And The Hidden In Nineteenth-Century Literature, Alisa M. Deborde
Seeing Trauma: The Known And The Hidden In Nineteenth-Century Literature, Alisa M. Deborde
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Trauma as an official diagnosis first entered the DSM in 1980 and literary theorists began employing the term to discuss literature not too long after. Since the 1990s, theorists have largely focused on twentieth-century trauma literature with Holocaust and Modernist texts garnering much of the critical interest. Yet, Victorian life was also marked by trauma-causing events. From railway catastrophes, to industrial accidents, to premature deaths, and infectious diseases, Victorians reckoned with wounds to the mind through their lived experience. Trauma scholars who do work with nineteenth-century texts, with few exceptions, consider trauma in terms of its modern theories. While the …

Although originating in Twitter, ST has expanded into other SNS, and is used therein not only to mark language-based posts, but also multimodal posts and images. While scholars have elucidated the structure and function of ST, their studies have primarily examined ST within language-based posts; few have researched ST with respect to images and other types …
An Examination Of Underlying Causes For Differences In Affect-Rich And Affect-Poor Choice, Elizabeth M. Fuller
An Examination Of Underlying Causes For Differences In Affect-Rich And Affect-Poor Choice, Elizabeth M. Fuller
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Real life decision-making frequently involves some level of affect, and research has demonstrated that individuals decide differently when outcomes are more or less rich with feeling. This difference in choice has previously been attributed to probability insensitivity in the presence of affect. In a series of three studies, we explored this possibility, while also testing alternative explanations, namely, that differences exist because of outcome characteristics such as comparability or precision. Individuals made choices between affect-rich side effects and affect-poor monetary lotteries in either a strictly numeric format, or with the addition of an icon array. Across the three studies we …

Investigation Of Alcohol-Induced Changes In Hepatic Histone Modifications Using Mass Spectrometry Based Proteomics, Crystina Leah Kriss
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Alcohol liver disease (ALD) is a major health concern throughout the world. Currently, in the United States, 17 million people suffer from alcoholism, of which 1.4 million people are receiving treatment [1, 2]. The link between ethanol metabolism, reactive oxygen species (ROS) and liver injury in ALD has been well characterized over the last couple decades [3-10]. Ethanol metabolism relies on the availability of the cofactor NAD+ for the oxidation of ethanol into acetate, consequently causing alterations in redox potential. Redox dysfunction within the mitochondria can affect multiple pathways important in maintaining cellular homeostasis. Chapter 1 provides an introduction to …
The Role Of Phosphohistidine Phosphatase 1 In Ethanol-Induced Liver Injury, Daniel Richard Martin
The Role Of Phosphohistidine Phosphatase 1 In Ethanol-Induced Liver Injury, Daniel Richard Martin
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Chronic liver diseases, which includes alcoholic liver disease (ALD), are consistently among the top 15 leading causes of death in the United States. ALD is characterized by progression from a normal liver to fatty liver disease (hepatic steatosis), which can lead to cirrhosis, alcoholic hepatitis, and liver failure. We have identified a novel role of phosphohistidine signaling, mediated through phosphohistidine phosphatase 1 (PHPT1), in the onset of hepatic steatosis. We have identified PHPT1 as a target of selective oxidation following acute ethanol exposure as well as being downregulated following chronic ethanol exposure. We mapped the oxidative modification site and developed …

Analyzing The Effects Of Ca2+ Dynamics On Mitochondrial Function In Health And Disease, Patrick Toglia
Analyzing The Effects Of Ca2+ Dynamics On Mitochondrial Function In Health And Disease, Patrick Toglia
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Mitochondria plays a crucial role in cells by maintaining energy metabolism and directing cell death mechanisms by buffering calcium (Ca2+ )from cytosol. Therefore, the Ca2+ overload of mitochondria due to the upregulated cytosolic Ca2+ , observed in many neurological disorders is hypothesized to be a key pathway leading to mitochondrial dysfunction and cell death. In particular, Ca2+ homeostasis disruptions due to Alzheimer’ s disease (AD)-causing presenilins (PS1/PS2) and oligomeric forms of β-amyloid peptides Aβ commonly found in AD patients are presumed to cause detrimental effects on the mitochondria and its ability to function properly. We begin …
